"British rock bands like The Rolling Stones, The Pretty Things, The Yardbirds, Pink Floyd and Them featured versions of his songs in their early repertoires. Later, the riff from Harpo's 1966 hit "Shake Your Hips", which itself was derivative of Bo Diddley's "Bring It to Jerome", was used in the ZZ Top hit "La Grange"..." See wikipedia for more
Different era, Blues artists respected one another and played each others songs and tried to put their own twist to them. It wasn't considered a rip off.
everyone one like a nice blues bopper go slim harpo john lee hooker did the original but this should of been the original as this is the dogs nuts thanks for adding
@squeakystool in the day, many artist such as slim, john lee, muddy waters, buddy guy, b.b., bobby bland, done each others songs...... i don't think it was as much ripping off the other artist , but, more of a tribute to them. I don't think you could find one British Invasion band as well as many Old U.S. rock bands that weren't heavily influenced by these artist, along with many more old blues artist
never mind zz top, this is slim harpo. and slim harpo is one of the greatest. right on on the same unbelievable level with john lee hooker, elmore james, wynonie harris, billy the kid emerson, willie dixon and the other boys (and girls!) ... well, zz top is just ... why even bother?
Boogie Chillen' was recording first by Mister John Lee Hooker, sorry not ZZ top, some people consider this song like the beggining of Rock&Roll ....!!!!
all around a nice cover... you can also hear what's actually charley patton reference at the end (i forget the song he does it in, think it's prayer o death)
@Pyway100 ZZ Top used the same riffs in the song La Grange and the "Boogie Chillin' " copywright holder sued ZZ Top. After a couple of trials it was determined that the guitar work is part of the public domain. (See Wikipedia La Grange ZZ Top).
@Pyway100 Without a doubt. So many people after these borrowed or stole from the original masters. They really should play this music on the regular stations and each the kids something. Cheers.
