this is typical of what happens when you run a small air cooled engine out of oil. excessive revs has nothing to do with it as a factory briggs conrod is good for about 5000rpm. and going by the audio in this clip it wasnt reving that hard to start with.

when i took it back to sears the mechanic took a look at it and said there was alot of dirt in the block. it turned out the intake was taking in dirt due to a factory defect (he didn't say why). the mower was still under warranty so i got a new motor out of it so it wasn't all bad.

its called a connecting rod and goes between the crankshaft and the piston and creates the up and down strokes and when u put to many revs and stress on that rod it will break apart somewhere along the line and the motor is usually done after that that was that tapping noise you herd look up how a 4 stroke engine works if u want to know what a crankshaft and piston are

i did the exact same thing with an identical mower, those tecumseh's dont take high revs too well. when i blew mine up, i went to a 15HP B+S. i blew up another one and ended up putting a 18HP Hatz Diesel.

Awesome. Props to you. When my brother and I were kids we bought a junk riding lawn mower and took the deck off of it and used it as a 4 wheeler. LOL brings back some memories. Governors are for girls. Blow the motor up, buy another for 30 bucks from the local pawn shop, or crazy old guy down the road with a hundred lawn mower parts and do it again. I thought it was great. 5 stars from me. :)

Here is what might have happened...If it was a newer Briggs and was an OHV then most likly he dropped the intake Valve, They don't hold up at higher RPMs, But if it was a flathead then most likely he threw the rod, or the counter weights inside...I'm guessing a thrown rod...Just my two cents.

I used to work for Sears for 2 years, and that isn't true in any way. The ONLY thing we replace for free without receipt is HAND tools such as ratchets, screwdrivers, sockets, etc. We don't cover power tools unless you have purchased a warranty on them. We CERTAINLY do NOT replace or fix lawnmowers for free either.

My mistake. Some people make them out of billet aluminum, the puller guys like to use heavy steel so the engine has more momentum. It depends what you're using the engine for, but it sure as hell ain't gonna be made of cast.

Yes it can. Most flywheels are made of cast iron which doesn't like to spin fast. They're only designed to hold up to about 4000 RPM or so... thats why lawnmower racers with modified engines run machined steel flywheels so they can wind the engine higher without them exploding. I saw pictures of a guy that revved his engine a little too long and a little too hard and the flywheel exploded, took out his leg, threw chunks though his shed and about a foot in the ground. Please do be careful!
