I find more women going into science instead of engineering. Men pretty much dominated my program, with like 10% female.
It is also worth mentioning about the École Polytechnique de Montréal massacre in 1989. A man killed 14 women thinking that they were feminists because they studied engineering.
Very interesting that Ana wouldn't be offended by being called "Engineer Barbie". I think Ana provides a much better voice for women than most of the Feminists I hear a lot about.
Put only females (Misty, Jacki) for stuff like that. It is just visually more entertaining when it come to soft news... Do I need to say more? SOFT news.
Most of the female engineers I've met are phenomenal. Many of them are gorgeous. Most of the men too are in good shape. Engineering is a field requiring discipline. It's not surprising that many of the best engineers I know are well-organized, athletic, and well-read.
Not to mention, many engineering students these days are foreign and speak multiple languages, fluently. The stereotype of smelly "geeks" are typically the more incompetent of the bunch, poor time management, poor discipline.
Everyones comeback on the Internet is oh your a 10 year old virgin! And I think to myself...what's wrong with being a virgin at ten? Ten! And then it's you have no life bro! I'm sry but how can you make that assumption? I an breathing when j respond to the densely comment so therefore, I have life...
I agree that gender roles are stupid, but I will say that men typically deal with sexism better than women because men are conditioned to deal with gender based teasing since childhood, so when say a guy nurse gets teased (from both sexes) he's more like to brush it off rather than complain and it doesn't typically lead to any hardships in the workplace beyond the teasing. What that means in general, I don't know. Probably has to do with superiority/inferiority complexes is society.
I'm surprised that Ana and Jayar didn't bring up the École Polytechnique massacre (aka the Montreal massacre). Women in engineering have it rough, and it's unfortunate. I wonder how much things have changed since 1989...
sexism in engineering school is because engineering school is a sausage fest and most guys there do not know how to interact with women. she should be proud and entertained
It is universal, though I think the women themselves are to blame for the situation. Like someone said, the problem comes from the fact that woman engineers are rare, nothing sexist about that. Females for some reason do not choose the engineering programs. It's not a problem, though it shows that there is a discouraging gender prejudice among women towards engineering.
If you are a minority, do not waste energy complaining. File it if you like and learn to accept the specialty attention.
Not going to lie, if a man came and did the entertainment hour, it would feel weird. But do it anyways. I won't hate.
I don't understand why any man would complain about more women in the stem fields. You should be celebrating. engineering and science fields are tough stuff and most of your social interaction will be within you class. The more females the better.
I wouldn't say that men experience sexism. In the same way that racism is discrimination plus power, sexism involves discrimination on the part of those with power/privilege. What men in female dominated fields face would be a result of our androcentric (male centered) culture, where masculinity is privileged over femininity. Men in nursing programs are seen as less not because they're men but because they're doing things women typically do.
I don't understand the NEED to have an equal number of the sexes in any particular field. If 80% of applicants are men and 20% are women, I expect to see the department with a 4:1 male/female ratio. Why do we NEED to make sure there are the same number of each?
@aronaraya23 They're in California, so they tend to get first hand knowledge on schools nearby as opposed to elsewhere unless someone sends a video in
I'm in the Mathematics program so I've taken my fair share of classes with Engineer majors. I must say there aren't many females in Engineering. There are many more females in the math program but its still dominated my men.
I take a lot of math and physics classes with engineering students, many of whom are girls. It's quite rare that a day goes by that one of those girls doesn't out smart me.
Great now the university is going to use this as an excuse to put more speech codes which violate the first amendment and besides, I've been called far worse things thatn engineer barbie.
A guy who scores 70-75% on papers and exams will get by just fine. But I bet a woman needs to receive at least 80% on everything to not raise eyebrows of faculty and TAs. Like any 'minority' in any field, being good enough isn't really enough-- you have to excel just to be equal.
sexism and racism are the biggest showcases of an individuals insecurities, Jayar is so right there. Ana needs to stop trying to be overly liberal when it comes to sexism and realise that it just plays into the pigs desires, she should have a little more female respect.
I was the only guy in a Feminist Literature class freshman year. There was much sex :). I'm the only "straight" guy in my yoga class and salsa dancing class. Once again, much sex. I get the biggest ear-to-ear, shit eating grin when "bros" diss the yoga mat slung on my shoulder, I just think "man you have no idea what goes on this mat do you?" Don't get me started with the salsa dancing. Next, scrap booking and pastry classes- VICTORY IS MINE!!!
@RapingRapier clearly you've never taken a decent salsa dancing class or yoga session, ;) results speak for themselves- not that I care what you believe
@RapingRapier you seem to enjoy calling other people 14 year old virgins, which says more about you than it does anyone else, so I'll let you have your fun. Reminds me of the guy that calls everyone a homosexual bc he is ashamed of his own secret homosexual identity - so he projects it onto other people. Replace homosexuality with virgin and voila! It doesn't help that you have the word "raping" in your username either. That said, I'm not interested in a flame war here so "to each his own"
There are some fields that favor/suit (in general) one sex over another. Most men are, in general, logical thinkers; which makes them more suited for maths, engineering, sciences. Women generally have every other favorable trait so they really can go into any field they want to, including the male-dominated ones.
As an engineering major, this mentally hurts to watch. Anna makes me facepalm so much. At my college, no one cares what gender someone is. Literally no one cares. We focus on what they know. If they are absolutely stupid, then "engineer barbie" is true, nevermind not being PC. If ANYBODY thinks that I dont have to prove myself every day because im a male, they're very very ignorant.

yeah, sexism in men occurs too... try being in a nursing program as a guy...it is not really a hostile envir but you will be surrounded by lots of women lol.=) ...
@SangtotheDy If she was blond and was taller it would make a lot more sense. Also nobody thinks you can take miniature person and then get human measurements from it. It is some sort of weird sort of propaganda by women to say look how hard girls have to look to think of themselves as beautiful. Lets say what it is girls who are hot want to be perfectionists and that is why they worry about weight and measurements.
as a mad science woman in research, i have to say, we have a female majority in the research scene. but there is a male majority in the previous generation (i.e. out bosses) tyt, u really need to do more research. dont make sweeping generalisations like this. the issue is more complex than this
You know what will stop sexism in engineering? More women enrolling in engineering! So, ladies, stop enrolling in liberal arts programmes and get your asses into engineering already!
@squirrelywrath2 LOL THATS TRUE! I'm a male student in electrical engineering and the number of girls in the department fit on my hands. Engineers are weird. 3/4 of them are not social or socially awkward. The other 1/4 is weird in their own way. The 3/4 really make it awkward for everyone and it's especially true when they interact with girls. They become less comfortable and awkward. Anyways, if a girl is in the class, guys flock to help them. That's an unfair advantage. I could use that help
@squirrelywrath2 From schooling most sexism favors girls and disfavors guys. Any guy in accounting, nursing, liberal arts except film, teaching, and so forth is considered a unattractive major to most girls therefore making social lives hard (party, friends, girlfriend an so on). If a girl is a 7 to 10 she will get the carpet laid out for her. Sorry for this generalization which is true but 7s, 8s, 9s, and 10s who are female look like hell coming to class, but still get a lot of male attention.
@Stamps600 Sexism as a concept does not favor anyone in particular, however yes the school system does seem to use sexism to favor women. I am doing an Msc in developmental psychology right now (with a sister who is an engineer, go figure), and the gender ratios in my program/in the undergrad classes that I teach have just become retarded. It has gone from 2 women for every man, to about 10 or 15 women for every man. Other than Engineering, men are not going to school anymore. :(
@squirrelywrath2 Women make up 55 to 60 percent of all college population, but it has been proven that more men are in business, math, and science majors. Women outnumber men in probably all other majors including medical doctor. The reality is roles in fields that pay the most are a majority of men.
That will ALL CHANGE in the Palination! Men will NOT be attending college in the Palination! Women will completely occupy all educated jobs including science, engineering, medicine, etc. Men will ONLY be doing HARD MENIAL MANUAL LABOR!
@squirrelywrath2 The whole concept of sexism has to favor people in situations otherwise it would not matter or exist. Sexism favors girls in college, socializing, entry level, and lower level positions because guys like having girls if you need proof ask a 9 or a 10 at your school how much she makes (Answer will be above: 60k), but when you are going for a top-level job $150k plus job like CEO,executive, doctor, top level manager and so forth sexism favors a guy. In the end it all balances out.
@Stamps600 I was not arguing against sexism existing, I was pointing out a category error. Sexism does not hold views or have thoughts or opinions of its own. People have views that can in turn be labelled as sexist based on motivations and results. Its like saying anger attacked someone. Anger is an emotion that could help motivate a person to attack someone, but anger is not the active agent in itself.
I am marking a lot of essays right now lol, dammit Im starting to correct youtubers now lol
@squirrelywrath2 There is also some cause for bitterness. Many companies have 'equal employment policies' by which they will employ as close to a 50:50 ration of men to women... but there are far more male engineering graduates than female, so there is a perception of women being incompetent engineers - as even the most incompetent will get the best jobs - while only the best men will get the job to work alongside them - making senior engineers think that women are all just worse.
Why aren't there any females in the engineering field? Throughout in my engineering classes, there have only been literally 1 or 2 girls in each class. I've never understood that. Is it not appealing to women? I'm just curious, because it would be nice to see more women in engineering classes instead of a freaking sausge-fest.
I wouldn't care if a guy came in and did the entertainment stuff, but I think you're right, Ana: society in general kind of expects that female reporters will do the "lighter" stories (cat up a tree, how much does Paris Hilton wiegh these days)in addition to whatever "hard" news that are given. Generally, you don't see men doing the "fluff" hollywood news as much.
@guardian85234 Because there is too much prejudice in the world. Its a shame, its a travesty, its ignorance. At this point in time we should really be much more ahead in our social evolution.
I dare compare this to an amish family letting their child die from a mild infection because they refuse to use antibiotics. Sure this isnt costing a life, but enough sexism will damage a life.
Women dont deserve inequal treatment. I believe in giving everyone a chance and then judging them on their actions
@Gr4yW0rld Calm yourself down, there is plenty of sexism toward men too. You should go out into the real world before you form your opinions, if you can't see sexism towards men in every day life, then you are blind.
@crackerz99 Sexism towards men needs to stop too. Many of the best chefs and fashion designers are men.
I am also pissed about racism too, even positive racism like grants for minorities. Give students grants if they are poor, but you have no right to say that they need help just because they are a minority.
I will not calm down, this should outrage everyone, all this prejudice holds us back as a society
@Gr4yW0rld I agree with you on grants for minorities, but if your so mad, walk down to your congressperson's office and bark at them, not on a youtube video.
I'm confused about why Ana does not find the "Barbie Engineer" comment offensive. Barbie is a dress-up doll, a piece of plastic. It implies that she is a "play" engineer, or a "fake" engineer just playing at it and not really serious about it. I've taken a lot of classes in philosophy, where there is a serious dearth of females, and if someone called me Barbie Philosopher, I could never respect that person. Doesn't help that philosophers like Aristotle, Kant, and Hegel were extremely sexist.
Not all the sciences are male dominated. Biology has a severe male deficiency, at least in Europe. In my Zoology class in Dublin there were only 3 men in 28. In my PhD program in Italy the Biology Department is 85% women. Of the men that are there, none of them are ridiculed for being in a "woman dominated field". Maybe it's just here I don't know
@CrystalEye736 iunno about bioliogy, but u've never heard of a man being made fun of for being a male nurse? or a man in a woman's studies class, or fashion design...its juss the stereotypical gender roles that lead others to make fun of them, my buddy is a male nurse and im sure he gets teased as much if not more than a female engineer
thumbs up if you think that JR is cool. No please don't do it. We know it anyway. J R got some voice. I would like to hear him more often. He has some kind of pure voice. Not bias at all. I like it.
I attended a graduation at a local university with a very good engineering department. The valedictorian, this semester, was a young lady whose GPA was 4.0 from this engineering department.
80% of the women at my engineering school were worthless. The good 20% wouldn't want to group with the bad 80% because they knew how worthless they were.
I'm tired of hearing about alleged "sexism", from now on that word will press the "don'tgiveashit" button in my head.
This isn't discrimination, she can't take a joke. A man doing a mostly female course would feel the same way, but if you're truely comfortable with the course you're in then you shouldn't care what people say.
have wes clark jr fill in for you ana I LOVE HIM HES SO FREAKING HA BISKY he is also educated over those ditzes misty and jacki when they are on it is so hard for me to watch them
i also have to say females who ware low cut close will also have that problem so ware classy close then they cant give you that shit as well if you are a female
I had this prof once who literally did this... when a female engineering student asked him a question the guy looked at her, drew a butterfly on the chalk board and then said "Look at the pretty butterfly ... now men, let's do science!" Everyone in class was severely pissed at this guy, both men and women. We just looked at him in shock.
@Rametesaima LOL Hilarious and any girl who is offended by that or offended by being called "Barbie Engineer" need to grow up. I guarantee it did not hurt their social lives or grades being a female in a male dominated major unlike straight males being in a female dominated major.
Our computer science department is under the Engineering department here at my university. In CSC, I haven't seen a large amount of sexism, but I have heard of remarks from freshman who are surprised at the fact that a female loves computers and engineering. They get corrected by the end of their first semester.
I find more women going into science instead of engineering. Men pretty much dominated my program, with like 10% female.
It is also worth mentioning about the École Polytechnique de Montréal massacre in 1989. A man killed 14 women thinking that they were feminists because they studied engineering.

Women outnumber men in probably all other majors including medical doctor. The reality is roles in fields that pay the most are a majority of men.
Stamps600 3 months ago
@Stamps600
That will ALL CHANGE in the Palination! Men will NOT be attending college in the Palination! Women will completely occupy all educated jobs including science, engineering, medicine, etc. Men will ONLY be doing HARD MENIAL MANUAL LABOR!
ecwaufisxtreme 3 months ago
@squirrelywrath2 The whole concept of sexism has to favor people in situations otherwise it would not matter or exist. Sexism favors girls in college, socializing, entry level, and lower level positions because guys like having girls if you need proof ask a 9 or a 10 at your school how much she makes (Answer will be above: 60k), but when you are going for a top-level job $150k plus job like CEO,executive, doctor, top level manager and so forth sexism favors a guy. In the end it all balances out.
Stamps600 3 months ago
@Stamps600 I was not arguing against sexism existing, I was pointing out a category error. Sexism does not hold views or have thoughts or opinions of its own. People have views that can in turn be labelled as sexist based on motivations and results. Its like saying anger attacked someone. Anger is an emotion that could help motivate a person to attack someone, but anger is not the active agent in itself.
I am marking a lot of essays right now lol, dammit Im starting to correct youtubers now lol
squirrelywrath2 3 months ago
@squirrelywrath2 There is also some cause for bitterness. Many companies have 'equal employment policies' by which they will employ as close to a 50:50 ration of men to women... but there are far more male engineering graduates than female, so there is a perception of women being incompetent engineers - as even the most incompetent will get the best jobs - while only the best men will get the job to work alongside them - making senior engineers think that women are all just worse.

At my major it's opposite. I'm studying ICT and ladies are accepted with open arms.

@poestasis7 Funny in my school it's a pretty even split unless your bio-engineering which is mostly girls

This is kind of reverse for me, when I was going to school, the sciences were dominated by women.
crackerz99 3 months ago
I wouldn't care if a guy came in and did the entertainment stuff, but I think you're right, Ana: society in general kind of expects that female reporters will do the "lighter" stories (cat up a tree, how much does Paris Hilton wiegh these days)in addition to whatever "hard" news that are given. Generally, you don't see men doing the "fluff" hollywood news as much.

Gr4yW0rld 3 months ago
@Gr4yW0rld why do you have so much hate?
guardian85234 3 months ago
@guardian85234 Because there is too much prejudice in the world. Its a shame, its a travesty, its ignorance. At this point in time we should really be much more ahead in our social evolution.
I dare compare this to an amish family letting their child die from a mild infection because they refuse to use antibiotics. Sure this isnt costing a life, but enough sexism will damage a life.
Women dont deserve inequal treatment. I believe in giving everyone a chance and then judging them on their actions
Gr4yW0rld 3 months ago
@Gr4yW0rld Calm yourself down, there is plenty of sexism toward men too. You should go out into the real world before you form your opinions, if you can't see sexism towards men in every day life, then you are blind.
crackerz99 3 months ago
@crackerz99 Sexism towards men needs to stop too. Many of the best chefs and fashion designers are men.
I am also pissed about racism too, even positive racism like grants for minorities. Give students grants if they are poor, but you have no right to say that they need help just because they are a minority.
I will not calm down, this should outrage everyone, all this prejudice holds us back as a society
Gr4yW0rld 3 months ago
@Gr4yW0rld I agree with you on grants for minorities, but if your so mad, walk down to your congressperson's office and bark at them, not on a youtube video.

I'm confused about why Ana does not find the "Barbie Engineer" comment offensive. Barbie is a dress-up doll, a piece of plastic. It implies that she is a "play" engineer, or a "fake" engineer just playing at it and not really serious about it. I've taken a lot of classes in philosophy, where there is a serious dearth of females, and if someone called me Barbie Philosopher, I could never respect that person. Doesn't help that philosophers like Aristotle, Kant, and Hegel were extremely sexist.
nothlithawk777 3 months ago 3
@nothlithawk777 it also doesn't help that most respected philosophers are/were male

Maybe it's just here I don't know
CrystalEye736 3 months ago
@CrystalEye736 iunno about bioliogy, but u've never heard of a man being made fun of for being a male nurse? or a man in a woman's studies class, or fashion design...its juss the stereotypical gender roles that lead others to make fun of them, my buddy is a male nurse and im sure he gets teased as much if not more than a female engineer

@Rametesaima That is incredibly shitty, but I still chuckled a little.

Our computer science department is under the Engineering department here at my university. In CSC, I haven't seen a large amount of sexism, but I have heard of remarks from freshman who are surprised at the fact that a female loves computers and engineering. They get corrected by the end of their first semester.
