My take on Obama's vision: His idea is to find common interests among those with opposing views so we can get something done. Example: Abortion. EVERYONE on both sides of the issue can agree it's not a desirable occurence! How can we reduce the occurence? There is lots of work that can be done in that department right now, educating (a liberal view) or creating stronger moral ethics for our young ones (a conservative view). These things don't necessarily conflict as life vs. pro life.
