this guy totaly made rhythim his BIOTCH! He was all like, yo rhythim?! And rhythim was all like ya baby. And he was all like. You wanna do allitle sumpin sumpin. Then rhythim was all lke, oh heelllll NO! And he then got up on a high chair and proceeded to slap the shizit out of rhythim! And rhythim then paid him the beats he was owed. And nine months later this solo was born!
Like him better then than now. He's become too sophisticated in my opinion.........I guess we all evolve as musicians........but have you ever noticed that almost all the great players who've gotten old............all sounded like they were taking a lot more chances when they were younger ? Except Buddy Rich
People need to keep in mind the pedals back in the 70's were primative in comparision with whats used today. No robots building hardware no computers testing acousics in drum R&D. By the looks of it he's using a Sling or Rodgers kit if im not wrong on the vid
Bozzio is unique in all fashions a changling from appearance to playing.
An athletic beast early in his carreer as a player. Terry was the package looks, humor wit, charisma style during the 70's and 80's. Marrried a centerfold and had plenty of groopy action to the liking. Terry has given the drumming community approaches to ostinato playing that we all need to thank him for. His solos have an african flare and dynamic comosition. Terry was pumped during this solo and blows off in speed
Now THIS is the reason Terry Bozzio is my all time favourite drummer. Yes, on a technical level, one of Zappa’s other drummers Vinnie Colaiuta maybe a *slightly* better drummer, but you just can't beat Bozzio's killer mixture of skill and energy.
Frank said that Terry wasn't his favorite drummer to play with, possibly because of their different styles, but my god is Terry AMAZING! Strange how he followed the path of his beloved Punky Meadows when he formed Missing Persons with Dale, Warren, and Patrick O'Hearn.
1:33 to 1:45 any musicians listening to this can hear the toms tuned to a triad as he plays from the 1-3 up to the 5th of the triad.amazing bit of musicianship 95% of the schmuck listeners out there don't even realize!
The 'man thong' was one of Terry's coolest riffs....but they definitely made homophobes squeamish. Guys back then had to be comfortable with their own sexuality to really dig Terry fully :)
W O W! This is from 1979 and hasn't been matched since! There are still youtubers and bloggers who claim Charlie Benate, Joey Jordison or Daney Carey are better double bass drummers, but this video proves them exhaustably laughable!!! I'm sure they have nothing better to comment on than his facial gestures and speedo, but that is true testamony to thier inteligence and talent!!
We'll see what other drummers are still influential 35 years from now!
My favorite part is when the awesome camera man zooms in to his face for the best part of the solo for a full minute instead of showing him playing the drums.
By today's supersteroid drumming standards Terry seems tame, but without him none of the guys who are today considered 'better' than he is would exist. He has been without question the single biggest influence on modern drumming.
@blackfloyd23 Haha yea I suppose so, but music isnt just about being the best player ever, its about sharing your stuff with others, as well as you taking stuff from them in order to improve, and also just hangin with other musicians who enjoy the same styles as you, this is where the friendship part comes into play :)
@jaqua524 Bonham is referred to by more drummers (as an influence) than anyone else.I'm tired of hearin about him myself...facts are facts... TB refers to JHB as an influence...I try to be as objective as possible, knowing my knowledge is limited, he's the link between the 60's flat sound to full sounding ,distinguishable, great sounding drums..he was also based in fundamental playing as well as the touch he had
his stuff was anything but routine...he' also just one piece in the puzzle
@badmammal well i am a drummer now, and its changed...moon is sitll the best in my opinion..but to say bonham is nothing special is absolutely rediculous...john bonham is incredible..his sense of groove, and beat in between the beats..like his take on the purdie half time shuffle in fool in the rain? brilliant..bonham was a groove machine..and those eighth note triplets he plays on the bass drum in good times bad times..phew.
I saw this guy when Zappa played the DC Cap Center in 1975 or so - he was just like this, like a savage animal pouncing on the drums - very athletic, very strong & dramatic drumming
@adoll000 Who, prior to or in that period of time, late seventies, can you compare him with specifically with respect to performing flams like these with one's feet? Who preceded Terry in this?
Will any of you naysaying idiots please post your transcription and your live, unedited version of this solo? For instance. how many measures long was the solo? Did he include the intro or play just the chorus? Does the solo follow the song form in tonality?
u all funnin. This is a lion that had darts thrown at his hind quarters in a cage and they led that cage to a drum set and the lion went bizzerke! hahhaaaahahah
Steve Vai once said, on working with Terry Bozzio for his "Sex & Religion" album, that "Terry Bozzio is the Steve Vai of the drum world....and I am Terry Bozzio of the guitar world".
oh my fu*king god! That's one crazy son of a bitch! He played with Jeff Beck at least on one Jeff's albums :D maybe he's played even on more albums :D I don't know :S
@vveq Whattaya talkin' about? He co-wrote most of the music in Missing Persons! It was HIS band! And if you listen to the albums, the drumming is hardly simple or basic.
@vveq missing persons had some the coolest rock drumming of all time, bozzio's two most incredible pieces can be found on FZ's "Sheik Yer Bouti" the track "Yo Mama" during the solo section and "UK's" "Danger Money" album the track "Carrying No Cross", also during the solo section....check em out!
Nothing like a friendly argument about music on Youtube. Personally, I think Matt Abts from Gov't Mule can play circles around the '60s drummers everyone worships. Vai vs. Hendrix - not fair. I personally saw Dweezil Zappa *OBLITERATE* Vai at Zappa Plays Zappa 3 times during the summer of 07. Hendrix would *SMOKE* Vai. Frank is the only rock guitarist who can/could outplay Hendrix in my not so humble opinion.
Frank Zappa composed pretty much every single note of the "Black Page" drum part (and llthe rest) but I assume this particular part is Bozzio's own improvisation, right?
Everyone who's into rock n roll (and roll and roll only) says that those three are/were the best, when they're nowhere near close, even though neil peart is an outsanding rock drummer.... anyway, besides Bozzio, try Dave Weckl, Gary Husband and especially Vinnie Colaiuta... those guys will make a Sex Pistols drummer out of "legends" like Bonham
@IgnatiusChinaski Maybe Terry Bozzio is/was the best drummer in term of technique. But his influence was not better than bonham, peirt and moon, who gave to the world of rock drumming more ! Just like comparing Hendrix with Steve Vai...
