  • Oh, you shrugging at the end... looks so cute. :) Anyway, I think it turned out very well. :)

  • Ohhh!!! Love this-- I am going to try this, but with one alteration: back-combing the roots on the underside of the front bit. Though I normally pin-curl my hair so I wonder if that wouldn't add more pouf to the "do". Thank you for demonstrating this!!!

You have lovely hair-- I wish mine was that thick!

  • I love your eyes :)

  • Thanks for sharing :) Women also in that era used hair saved from their hairbrush and such to help with the different styles.

  • that's very pretty!

  • Your hair is so beautiful and the hairstyle looks really pretty on you :)

  • Great tutorial! You have beautiful hair!

  • your hair is lovely,

  • I remember my grand mother doing her hair in this style, I never knew what it was called. You are very brave to keep going. In the olden days they used what was called a hair rat, this was a sort of pad that was about rat shaped and sized that they laid across their foreheads then lowered the roll onto it to give it body in the middle. I cannot find hair rats anywhere on sale, they used to be in chemist shops. If you find one please let me know, my hair is too think to do this with now.

  • @portlandbells99 sorry for really poor description. actually you hold your hair down over your face, place the hair rat on the top of your front of your head and then roll the hair back over it and continue with the combing etc.. please dont be critical, you have done great!!!

  • @portlandbells99 My grandmother had hair almost to her waist, and wore a simplified version of this. She said her mother simply cleaned her hairbrush every couple of weeks, and rolled the hairs from the brush into a bratwurst shape. My grandmother did the same thing at some point.

It is possible to buy a tubular foam roll at beauty supply stores. They are about 1 1/2" in diameter, and can be cut easily if they're too long. Not as good as the real hair ones, but they'll do the trick.

  • Even though it's not perfect, it does suit you :) You look really cute with it.

  • Which song did you use for this? I play piano and would love to learn it.

  • @TheKatIsBackAgain

It's Moonlight Sonata being played by a Cave Organ in the Luray Caverns.

  • That's why they had maids to help them with these insane hairstyles! Your video gave me a basic idea, though, thank you! You have beautiful hair. Hope you figured it all out by now.

  • this is really good, i liked this

  • Is the song being played by that cave church organ (that I forget where it is at the moment...)?

I really like how you're doing a twist bun at the top. Looks a lot better than some of the stubs that result from an elastic tie.

  • @PhoenixBlackthorn oh wow, thank you. i've spent the month since i've posted my last comment trying to find out what the music is, and you helped me find it :D

  • You have such long and soft-looking hair!

  • Brilliant, you look of the era too. Seriously regretting chopping my hair to shoulder length now...bah!

  • this is a gorgeous version of the song, who is it by?

  • This is exactly what I've been looking for! Thanks so much!!

My hair is about as long as yours, and this is exactly the style I want to do. This is SO valuable to me just to show me not only how the hairstyle is done, but also how to do it on myself. :D

Right! Off to dig out my bobby pins! :D

  • bless xxx

  • I liked this, the basic steps are clearly shown and easy to follow... looks close enough to a perfect gibson girl to me! Always wondered how to do this look.

  • looking at vintage photos of the backs of real peoples heads, you did the back pretty well. you have done pretty well, the back has more of a pouf at the bottom than photos i saw. these were from hawaii territory in late 1800s and the front was a lot like you did, but back was more or less a twist or bun, not as elaborate. you did a good job, i get the idea how at least.

i was cringing to see you comb your pretty hair dry though! combs are for wet hair, use a brush if your hair is dry!!!!

  • @jesusfreak0818 Combing your hair while its wet is not a good idea. Hair is more fragile when wet and breakage happens easier, same with brushes in general. Therefore, I use a comb and only use a BB Brush when applying oil to my hair.

  • It's fantastic already. Don't care about it's not perfect, it doesn't have to be, romantic look doesn't have to be perfect:)

You have great mirrors for doing updos!:)

  • thats so amazing love the hair kinda love to play with it we want more vids

  • Did you work on this style some more? You don't have an update, so I assume you are not working on it all that much. I like the "sort of" and enjoy watching you do it, but if you have perfected it better it would be nice to see that.

  • I did work on it some more and actually wore it to a class this last weekend on ancestors. Grad school has left me little time to make videos and as soon as I can take a breather, I will post another one with a better look to it and a slightly different way to do it.

  • Sounds good. I'll look for it later on. If you don't mind me asking, are you an arts grad?

  • Close. Art Therapy Counseling is my area of study

  • amazing!

  • thanks a lot for this video! really helpful!

  • I love this hairstyle, keep trying. have you done a research on it?

  • I have a little bit. I have seen how the women of yore actually did it in their own time (and it can get pretty gross) as well as a friend of mine doing it to her own hair in one swoop of the hair, but her poof is not as grand as it is historically.

  • actually, the one I love and the one this gal did, the "poof" was all around her head and then the extra hair somehow got tucked in the middle or the poof, I don't remember. but the visual was so elegant. actually, you know, as I am typing, I am remembering, my sister in law had her hair done this exact way for her sons wedding. I am going to get a picture from her and then somehow get it posted somewhere. what do you think?

  • she did this hairstyle every day, it was so lovely. I think it is from the 1890's to early l900's isn't it? If someone knows how to do this hairstyle, please show us.

  • I saw a gal do this once. she put a pony tail high on her head. then she pulled the elastic way out to just past the half of her hair and then she brought it down into the middle of her head. but how she hid the then remaining hair, I don't remember. I wish someone knew how to do this.

  • beautiful.

  • i like ur hair =] God Bless YOu!

  • I always wondered when i saw movies, how they did that. And i always thougt it was very complicated, but this is rather simple...it's also great you don't have to poof you hair, so there's no damage to your hair...you did very nice, thanks a lot!

  • omg! great ob!!!! and ur eyes, are soooo pretty, i dont think i could ever do that with my hair, i would get to fustrated. lol. haha. :D

  • Nice job!

I've read that women of the time used to collect the hair from their hairbrushes and use it to make hair pieces or rolls to "fill out" parts of their hairstyles that might be a little flat.

  • That's actually pretty good, you are very hard on yourself. I bet if you'd just pinned that knot up to the right a bit it would have looked great. I like seeing these less than perfect attempts. I find them more helpful than perfectly executed styles when I'm learning. It's a lovely style & is much harder to pull off than it looks. Thanks for inspiring me not to give up.

I'm looking forward to seeing this on you when you're finished perfecting it. I just know you'll wear it beautifully.

  • So THAT is how it is done! Duh! All these years looking at historical movies and wondering about how they do it. Looks fairly easy. I will try this at once!

  • It looks pretty good even though you don't have it down as well as you'd like. The style suits you.

  • You are too cute! Great job on the hairstyle and I love your little added comments! :)

  • Nice Job! I don't think I could even do it!

You have very pretty blue eyes :)

    Thanks for sharing.

  • LOL Your so cute. You did a great job, I get the idea thats what matters. Also your hair is just beauti ful....

  • I love it! I'll take this hairstyle over the flat ironed, pin-straight, zero body, jaggedy-layered modern hair styles any day! :p

  • Well done, LO. Oh that more ladies would try these Gibson girl styles.

  • Super soft and romantic style. Can't wait to see it after you've done more practice!

  • Very nice. I love it!
