  • does anyone know where do get a dvd of this concert?

  • do they have an email address or a homepage`would like to send tzhem a message, after i found one of their songs after 30 years of searching (texas rangers)....

  • Excellent! thanks a million for this post. What a great moment in folk!

  • There's an awful lot out there that's fake and hype, and precious little that's authentic...this moment, however, is absolutely REAL...enjoy it

  • how can you not love this when you have three CANADIAN ICONS on the stage at the same time with such beautiful harmonization thank you for posting it wish i could get the whole concert

  • @bcharding1

I'm from Rochester, NY. In the early and mid-60's, I pointed the outside antenna on our TV north so I could watch Ian & Sylvia's show on CBC, before watching Hockey Night in Canada.

I'm from Rochester, NY. In the early and mid-60's, I pointed the outside antenna on our TV north so I could watch Ian & Sylvia's show on CBC, before watching Hockey Night in Canada. How I wish I could have been at this show!

  • I think Ian & Sylvia nailed this song, as much as I like the other folkies who recorded it-esp. on their original album-thanks for finding and posting it-slan, Jim

  • Beautiful.

  • Thank you for saving this moment from oblivion .

  • Wow! That had me floating right along. Such great talent. God touches only a few.

  • Incredible.

No duo since has even come remotely close to their harmony and virtuosity.

Sylvia's voice and accompaniment complements Ian's in a way that captivates me in silent open-mouthed wonder.

Nothing they have done solo has come close to the combination of the two.

  • I played this Song for Audience in my own Country here in Germany so many times i can´t remember how many it was.

Grdon Lightfoot is a exciting Singer indie. Ihope you understand my english.

    Gerry

  • Lightfoot never received the accolades he so well deserved. A gifted songwriter that wrote many songs that other artists made famous.

  • another classic gordon the meaning of this song is so real to an ordinary gut !

  • I remember seeing this show way back when. I loved it, being a long-time fan of both Ian and Sylvia and Gordon Lightfoot.

Ian and Sylvia's original version of this song is still my favorite.

  • What a great show! to have Gordon Lightfoot show up and sing wit Ian and Sylvia. As an old folkie this makes me love youtube.

  • Hmmm, What I'm smelling is the envy of someone so starved for self-esteem the only they can get attention is to trash people that are actually doing something with their lives.

  • 19944,,,,,,,,,if it was up to ME,,I would not allow your filthy dirty mouth on the comment section AT ALL,,, great song good people singing,,good canadian people,,,,,,

  • 19944 are you drunk?

i think lightfoot who wrote this is part native american from canada

  • cheers to one non workin piece of trash from another

  • From all us folks at station 42, we love you toothless moohshine making retards

  • I love these 2 stupid county inbred idiot making music bastards,,,i love them though,,,with a big W, for white trash,,

  • I miss my daddy so, listenin' to this song.

  • Gordon Lightfoot did it first,,good version though

  • I guess that's probably why they brought him out to sing it with them, eh? Used to see Ian and Sylvia in DC at the Cellar Door in DC in the early 60s. Ian still tours, where is Sylvia?

  • Peter Paul and Mary did it in the 50s

  • Comment removed

  • @Rajamuttu um this is what you listen to? how goyishe can you get?

  • This is so sad.

    Beautiful

  • Exactly!!!

  • It's beautiful. Thanks for posting.

    xo

  • Someone tell the bass player the right chords!

  • The Freedom Bird

    By Jorge A. Maspons

I remember the day when my turn came to board "The Freedom Bird." As the time came close the excitement built within me and those boarding the "Airlift International," destination Travis Air Force Base, California with stops in Yokota Air base, Japan and Anchorage, Alaska. The trip home would take twenty two long hours from Bien-Hoa, South Vietnam.

One of the unique things about the Vietnam War was the troop rotating system.

  • My comment is to Jimtraner: My husband spent 3 tours in Vietnam and has NEVER heard of a freedom bird, so whatever it is you think you know, it's no big deal to real veterans.

  • FYI - Freedom Bird flights that transported soldiers back to the United States at the end of their Vietnam tour

  • I'm ashamed to admit I was kind of accepting the prevailing view that Sylvia's roll was trivial or easily replaced. If you were to listen to their early Vanguard recordings - the 1st 3 especially, she was an equal partner in what they were doing. Her roll, almost always, was true 2nd part harmony. She participated in the writing, & arranging of the traditional #'s they dad, at the time. Ian was definitely the more compelling singer, but she deserves her props. And she was surely nice to watch.

  • Canadian rich in music..yep!! The Guess Who (highly underrated), Neil Young, Lightfoot, Robbie Robertson and some rather obscure names, but just as good or better. For example, Valdy, to be really obsure, Gene MacLellan from Prince Edward Island. Anne Murray sang, "Songbird"-MacLellean wrote it and a pile of other unknown songs.

  • Anne sang "Snow Bird" not "Songbird" written, as you say, by the late Gene MacLellan whose daughter, Catherine, by the way, is a fine if also not well known folk singer.

  • I remember every time we saw a "Freedom Bird" fly over, someone would start singing this. If you don't know what a "Freedom Bird" was, don't ask. The guys who did, they know what I'm talking about.

  • i cant get any volume on this is it my computer????

  • This might have been "Gordan's song," but Ian's version, on Vanguard back in the 60's, was so good - it's the one I remeber & cherish.

  • I agree 200%! What always struck me about Gord's version was that he bellowed it out in a way no one lying hungover in the grass by an airport would ever do. The Ian & Sylvia version, by the way, on the album also titlked Early Morning Rain has an incredible upright bass solo part.

  • Wow..Thanks for posting this..was that at the Nanton hotel?

  • They've still got it! I got the Vanguard album that this was on for my 15th birthday many moons ago. I pretty much wore it out. Years later, I bought a CD and my daughter fell in love with "Maude's Blues" and added to her repertoire. Yeah Canadians!!

  • I'm a great fan of I & S, and heard them dozens of times in the 60s, 70s, close up in clubs (The Cellar Door in DC, primarily). Frankly, I'm a bit disappointed in the cuts I've heard from this reunion concert. Ian's raw power just isn't coming through. I know it's supposed to be a duet, but the driving force in their performance was truly Ian, for sure. I still enjoy it ... but I miss the Old Sound from Back Then.

Too bad there aren't many early tapes of theirs on Youtube.

  • Thank god Gordon joins them. They butcher this song. Check out Gordon's version...way better. He wrote it after all!

  • Have you heard George Hamilton IVth's version?

  • Geez Ion.. that's a lil' harsh..don't ya think? I think they do a nice job w/it.. The

harmonies are great.. and when they join in

in w/ GL, I think it's a transcendental musical moment.

  • How can I get a video of this concert?

    Any format.

What an incredible concert. This should go down in history with the Monterey Festival and Woodstock.

  • Love this song ~"AngeLoner"~

  • Thanks so much for posting this video - talk about bringing back great memories! - We used to frequent the Purple Onion in Yorkville(Toronto) - anyone out there heard of that place? Ian and Sylvia were/are incredibly talented people, as is Gordon Lightfoot!

  • Sounds like you Canadians had some rich musical experiences, including my all-time fave, Leonard Cohen! Seen Leonard 2 or 3 times way back when. Heard he's doing a tour. Ian is so underrated!

  • is this concert available? dvd or vcr.

  • What a joy to find this video. I loved Ian and Sylvia in the day, and Gordon was also one of my favorites. It broke my heart when they broke up. Does anyone know if their son sings or plays? (Mr. Spoons) And, did they have more children than the one son?

  • I think they had only one son. Yes, he's toured as a singer/songwriter/performer, and I have his album, _Kick It Down_, or something like that. You can find links from Sylvia's homepage. I don't think it'll sell as many copies as Teddy Thompson's or Rufus Wainwright's stuff.

  • I'm thinking that you're probably right...

  • You know, it just doesn't get any better than this ! What great musical talents, thanks for posting. This one is getting saved ot the "all time" favorites.

  • Thank you for this merci beaucoup

  • Heya can some1 download the (That's What You Get) For Lovin' Me song as i cant find it anywhere but wd reli like 2 hear it - i have tried youtube nd everythink else as well

thanks nd get bk 2 me wen u have xx

  • ice, thank you for deleting those comments, they were very hurtful. And thank you for posting "the music of our lives" here so that we can relive the wonderful memories that Gord, Ian and Sylvia have given to us. Thank you again.

  • Hi Geo31 and all ... This was an amazing concert and I remember it very vividly and I also taped it onto Beta. I have just recently received an old Beta machine from some friends of mine but I will need to get it fixed but when I do I plan to post all the marvellous songs onto the net (providing I can still find the tape )as well as ... to be continued

  • part II ... (as well as ... ) posting the whole darn thing on a BitTorrent somewhere. I would not need to do this if CBC in their infinite wisdom decided to release a DVD of the conceert. Today is August 9th so look for it maybe in early September assuming it can be fixed ... the beta machine that is. Best Don Barone

  • Thank you a-hat-mose. very pleased that you go your old Betamax VCR working your torrent is slowly downloading as I write this

  • My Very Favorite

  • OK

    1. I have deleted the uncalled for comments by the poor brainless twit whose parents never married who called itself

    testaclecrusher

    and

    2. If you wish to see the most excellent Kingston Trio version

click on "more from this user" (me) then simply go to

or search for medley "Flowers and Rain" The Kingston Trio

  • @icepick141 Appreciate KT tip.

  • Wow. This is moving, it is grand to see these three together. What wonderful and talented people.

  • Testiclecrusher... Good riddance to your nasty insult as I will report you to the you tube terms of service. Don't post any nasty comments on me or you will end up looking more like an idiot with an attitude problem.

  • You take your own retarded comments off you tube. Your comments are trashy and insulting. Leave Ian and Sylvia ALONE!!!! And leave my favorite singer, Gordon Lightfoot alone too.

  • Calling Ian & Sylvia hicks who can't sing is like calling John Lennon a mic who can't think.

  • What a dirty mouth you have. As Bambi was told "If you can't say nothing nice...don't say nothing at all."

  • Of course if you did away with Ian Tyson you would lose classic songs like "Four Strong Winds" and "Someday Soon". Gordon Lightfoot, the composer, seems to enjoy performing with them. Methinks you don't know much about music.

  • I agree Gord's version is the best, as he is the writer, but there are many wonderful covers out there, such as The Kingston Trio, or Peter Paul and Mary, whose version is also on YouTube. Check some of them out. I think Peter Paul and Mary's is the most beautifully blended harmony-wise.

  • I was just tryng to say,,,,do not bucher a perfect song by turning it into a western because it does'nt work...Only Gordon can perform and make it sound perfect....

  • this is one of the most beautiful melodies ever written, twang or not. It's such a feeling of "coming home" that this song inspires. Does anyone have the Kingston Trio's version?

  • cmonnnnn,,too much twangggg,,,this is not a western song,,,,,

  • thank you for this so very much. true Canadian talent and the love of my life in the past, present and the trails to come.

  • that was...SWEET!

  • So Good to see Gordon before his illness-are there so few videos of him when he was younger? God Bless Him.

  • This is a heroric dedication to the three wonderful legend..... Gordon Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia Tyson! These three beautiful Canadians! So good to see them for the first time in several years!!! WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!

  • Perfection! Elvis sang this beautifully as well.

  • I give the edge to Gord's voice (at that time).

  • Sigh ... what a voice. Thanks for posting!

  • Do you mean Ian or Gordons voice...:-)))

  • Really Good!

  • Wow..... they look so glamorous and sooooo different!!!! I love you, Ian and SILVIA ANNNND GORDON LIGHTFOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTT :-) YESSSSSSS!!!!!!

  • she's beautiful and he's a poseur...still great to hear this though

  • you think he is a poseur? I think just a man on a horse! They were the greatest together but relationships sometimes fail! Both have carried on separately. I think both are quite talented. And fortunately doing OK. Perhaps it was the hat you didn't like!!

  • This has to be one of the most inane comments I've seen posted in quite some time. Listen to the two voices - Ian Tyson has one of the truly distinctive voices of that era, while Sylvia's, as attractive as she may have been - was utterly banal; her place could have been taken by any pretty backup singer. The sound of Ian and Sylvia is the sound of Ian Tyson's voice and vocal styling.

  • i agree about the singularity of Ian's voice, but in addition to her harmonies, Sylvia contributed to the duo's artistry in her writing.

  • She does add to the beauty of his work, he's so talented but that extra something would be lacking without Sylvia. I realize many singers could have replaced her, but I'm glad they are Ian and Sylvia just the same.

  • I think you're right; a lot of women could have taken Sylvia's place as a singer. However, the two of them always seemed to have a chemistry that I don't believe Ian would have had with any other woman. There was something between them. It's like with Stevie Nicks. As fabulous as she sounds with EVERY duet partner she has, no one will ever have the stage chemistry of her and Lindsay Buckingham. Some people are just meant to sing together. Ian and Sylvia are two of them.

  • "he's a poseur"

And you're an ignoramus with the musical taste of a garden slug. So what does "beautiful" have to do with their music, wench?

Anyone who ever heard them close up, in person, knows that Sylvia could have been replaced (and considering how flat she sometime sang, probably should have been).

Ian Tyson's voice had to be heard in person to be fully appreciated for the pure power and "presence" it had. Haven't heard him in person since the 70s, so I can't speak to the present.

  • Don't agree about Sylvia though I do think she was the lesser of the two. Tyson's voice was unbelievable. Alas, that's past tense. A couple of years back he sang in bad weather and was struck my a virus that did in his vocal chords. But he's a trouper and has recorded with this new raspy breathy voice on the album, "Yellowhead to Yellowstone and Other Love Stories. Still worth listening to.

  • That's a real shame about his voice.

I have never quite figured out why no recording ever seems to capture the feeling of sheer power that his voice conveys in person, at least close up.

It's the reason I kept coming back every night.

Part of it was, I think, that Ian was always sitting down in those small clubs -- and of course only a couple of feet away from me. That, and he was always so relaxed, and seemed to be having a lot of fun being there and singing to a small group of people.

  • A video like this shows why Gordon is, simply, a legend.

Ian and Sylvia do a great job singing "Early Morning Rain", but when Gordon comes on the stage, it's clear that nobody sings the song quite like he does. What an amazing video.

  • Loved it! Thx.

  • Wow, they don't make music like this anymore!! What a treat.

  • It's amazing that even with such an expressful and excellent voice, Gordon Lightfoot's career first took off as a songwriter. I loved his wave at the end.

  • This is the kind of music you hope to hear in Heaven!

    Luv 'em!

  • That just made my day. You go IAN.

  • three treasures!!!

  • Excellent!!

  • What a treasure, thanks!

  • What a treasure, thanks!

  • Great! I've been wanting to see this program for years! Thanks for the snippet, and what a great moment to see them with Gordon.

  • Fantastic! Thanks so much.
