Human sewage on the streets after any rain. The sewage system is concrete lined ditches that drains to the rivers. These ditches plug up all the time with poo, leaves, trash, soil, etc. and then its all over the place. Now I know why they take their shoes off when entering a home. The smell is unbelievable. I saw city workers standing in these ditches without protective clothing shoveling this crap on to the streets and sidewalks and venders selling food with piles of shit all around them. Hell

i go there every year and stay with my extended family in the south. viet nam has come a long long way in an incredibly short period of time. is the government perfect? of course not! but remember that the govt has, so far, handled the world economic crisis far better than the american govt.
