My parents had a 1960 Fairlane. Ran well, so far as I can remember. What's interesting is that according to what I've read, the full sized 1960 Fords were actually too wide by about an inch or so and the feds let them slide but Ford corrected the issue for the 1961 cars.
I like the 60's Ford! The Falcon had a 144 cid and a 170 cid engines, both six cylinder. In 1963 they went to a 200 cid 6 and a 260cid v-8. My friend in the military had a 1960 with the 144 engine. He was getting 35 mpg.
Yes the Falcon got 30mpg, even more depending on the driver. We had a 1960 Cadillac Fleetwood series 60, 390 cubic inch 345 horsepower with every option avalible then. It got 18 mpg on the highway excellent for a 5400 pound monster! No Air Bags, No anti-lock brakes, No computers, just a perfectly safe car!
The Falcon was not a 4 cylinder! never had one. It was an inline six, which ran just fine did not overheat or had a problem. those sixs ran forever with routine oil changes and service.
Now guys where tux's only on their wedding day. Flip flops, calm diggers and wife beater shirts today are the norm. "Sherman, to the way back machine".
I love cars. This is cool.. Brings back memories of dads new Galaxie and moms white T-bird. I remember the day when these beauties were new and parked in the driveway . Cars were glamorous back then. and yeah, can't believe that was fifty years ago. Whew!!
I'm an old commercial hobbiest myself... only that my commercials cover mainly the 1980s - this is by far the best car commercial from the Post World War II - Pre JFK assassination era of economic prosperity.
I love how there is so little attention paid to the engineering , Its all about comfort and Style, Style Style!!! We new that we built solid sturdy cars in America (That you could do a lot of the repairs on yourself ) So it was all about curb appeal and elegance ! God how I miss those Wonderful golden days of American culture.
Damn those are some classy Fords they've got. I'm only 18 and I could say these are much better than most of today's Fords apart from a few which I like.
I could even say that Galaxie is kinda Caddish in some way. Ford was very elegant back then but now they're just in the same league as Honda, Toyota and such who build economy based cars.
@MerleOberon Yes... but women then knew how to walk in spike stiletto heels, and dress well and do their hair and expected their men to appreciate it. WE DID!!
I sold my 60 Sunliner last year. I miss it dearly, but needed the money. On premium gas it got 13 city and 18 highway, pretty much SUV type mileage. It had a 352 with a 4 barrel.
If that Falcon got 30mpg by 1960's standards, that would be like saying a 2010 Ford Fusion should get 100mpg. I'm sure if you used todays mpg guidelines, the Falcon would be rated closer to 18mpg. These cars are BEAST! They are as big as a house! They are still better than most new cars :)
It only weighs 2000 pounds. to compare it to the little 2009 Honda Civic 2 door, It weighs almost 3000 pounds . My Falcon gets 27 miles to a gallon. Mobil did a road test from detroit to California in 1961 and they got 32 miles per gallon.
Wow! 1960 Ford cars. The 1960 full-size Fords abandoned the ostentatious ornamentation of the 1950s for a futuristic, sleek look. Cool!

There were no 4 cylinder Falcon sold in the United States, they were 2 six cylinders to choose from, years later you coould chose a V/8 but not a 4.
rotary12arx3 1 year ago
There were not "falcon 4's" but there were plenty "ford 4's". you follow?

They just don't make automobiles like they used to. My father had a '65 Falcon & only had to change the ignition points & condenser one time.
shawnlalanne 2 years ago 4
In 44 years only the points and condenser? Extremely unlikely. Museum cars that don't move need more mantainence.
Ur dad, whilst drunk, probably slurred that to you and ur naive-ass belived him.
schumacher500 2 years ago
He had the car for six years. Six is not bad for a single point & condenser set. Most have to be replaced every year ot so.

Gee, I'd better get out my ballroom gown the next time I buy a car. And I want the salesman in a tux too. Might as well.
