Steve sounds great nowadays. Heroin causes one to lose their voice at the most, and lowers the top range of the voice at the least. So, coupled with the choking, this explains to me why he sounds this way circa late 80's early 90's. So what. The man is a legend. To come back from what he came back from and produce consistant quality work is nothing short of amazing.
I'll would like to say Steve Earle is nothing but the greatest at everything he has accomplished. I would be proud too follow behind in his footsteps to see him at work and just be in awe of what he does.
im not talkin about being out of it on drugs........i meant the affect the drugs and drink had on him meant he was never the same, his live singing was terrible and i should no as ive seen him live plenty,
he was at his best here, dont care what anyone says but he went downhill from here on,still wrote great songs but could barely sing live he was so out of it
@nilradem At this point in his career, drugs aside, he was recovering from an off duty cop who almost choked him to death and his voice was paying the price for years... the cough syrup probably didnt help much either..
True, but if memory serves I think that was two years before this. I think the drugs and smoking may be a bigger factor, especially as I think he was smoking crack by this time.
And I was really talking about the long term - his voice now vs. Guitar Town. Don't get me wrong, I love all his music, which was my point to the comment that he had gone downhill.
@nilradem The choking effect did not just go away in short period of time, it had a lasting effect, but as you say, at this point there was a bunch of factors in action that served to sabotage live performancs, but even at his worst (according to some of his managers and tour associates, Shut up and Die Like an Aviator is still a great rock and roll testimony, ragged voice or not.
@1888gp i respect your comment but 6 years after the Hard Way he put out one of if not his best album in 1996 called I Feel Alright. then followed it up with 5 other albums that focused on songwriting. Steve Earle is by far one of the best songwriters in the world. he just went underground after screwing up his career on heroin in 1990. all his albums since 1995s Train a Comin have been released on underground labels and all of them are damn good.plus he is now clean and sober.
@1888gp i've seen him 12 times in concert over the last 20 yrs, stoned or not, he never gave less than a perfect performance, yeah, his voice changed, but the magic is still there...
This footage is good, but I really wish someone would post the original video again, too - didn't he look great up there on that platform with his hair blowing in the wind?!
Yeah, he was singing with a head full of something else here, too!
Thank God he got his collective shit together. He's one of the best in my book, a natural singer, songwriter, political activist, and a damned decent guy.
I hear ya. actually I like Copperhad Road the best, cause im more into rock/metal. But I could listen to anything from Steve all day long. I like listening to him on Sirius ch 63 outlaw country on saturday. hes gota good show, he talks alot about music n stuff.
hey rich, you are totally right!! this is an incredible song and i love seeing Steve doing this!!! wow....all of that talent in one gorgeous person....
I'm Jeff Pierson, I've been playing with Spade since '00. We play mostly as a duo, I'm on mandolin, Spade's playing guitar. We will play about 45 weekends this year, mostly in Irish Pubs here in Jacksonville or down in Gainesville Florida. To say that playing and hanging out with Spade is a blast would be a huge understatement! What a great guy and super talented songwriter-vocalist, imho.
If you are ever in NE Florida, look us up! Spade keeps a gig schedule on his MySpace page.
I've been waiting so long to see my heroes again! This is great! This is a request to all people who might have any video material of Energy Orchard to put it on Youtube! Comming from Belgium, I travelled quite a few times to London to see them.
To you EO guys: I still listin to your records a lot!
Energy Orchard split shortly after touring with Steve on this tour, but Bap Kennedy (Lead singer) went on as a solo artist and recorded Domestic Blues with Steve in 1996.
oh, yeah, he sure made a girl's heart hurry back then, but he's still hot at 54...i'm 52 though, so i look at things a little differently!!! he is incredible always....been blessed to see him five times in the last two years!!
About Steve Earle-what more can I say?-the man is a rock legend and a country genius. The Other Kind is brilliant!

"Could barely sing he was so out of it"???
Do you realize he got clean in 1994 and rebuilt his career? He certainly can still sing live, though his voice is rougher.

This song kicks ass. It's a great road song, got great dynamics, subject, etc, etc, Steve rocks.! The Petes from ON. Canada
prooter 2 years ago 2
@prooter: Every time I hear this song I think about how horrible Bon Jovi is. Seriously, Bon Jovi wrote a road song,
"I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride
I'm wanted, dead or alive"
SE writes one,
"Used to be I was really free, I didn't need no gasoline to run
Before you could say Jack Kerouac you'd turn your back and I'd be gone"
Draw your own conclusions.
