At the end of the day, Wing Chun is one of the most EFFECTIVE martial arts in a REAL fight. Which is what matters. Boxing and MMA can be effective in the ring, with gloves and rules and shit. But it won't be as effective in a street fight where anything can happen.
Wing Chun wasn't created for MMA and competitions. It was created for a real fight.
Read Bruce Lees book. almost ALL like 90% of his hand strikes are from western boxing. foot work from boxing and fencing. dont be dumb check it out. Boxers > wing chun. HE even credits boxing. And yea east to predict but you wont block or dodge in time. Western boxing is the best in the world when it comes to hand strikes.
Yeah just read my reply to kist420. It applies to both comments. Wing Chun strikes are weaker but faster. More street effective, but there is a reason they are not used in the ring. Because boxing hits harder, stuns better, it's more effective on a stunned opponent. But it's slower. To jab or hook a Wing Chun man is to be trapped. Boxing is a sport, designed around the use of gloves. You can't trap with gloves. Again, simple.
Oh one more thing. To say you won't block or dodge in time is ridiculous. Bruce Lee's art is based on interception and the concept that an attack on a prepared opponent leads to being intercepted and countered.

what would you know, as in an Alan Watt's book on Zen, I quote: "you can be a true Zen buddhist and still steal your neighbours oxen and make love to your neighbours wife"..at it's core Zen has a philosophy about seeing reality as it is, free of the ego & presumptions, which is Independent from Western presumptions about 'holy men' and 'morality'...In his martial arts Bruce was all Zen, and applied it's philosophy, though as a person he was arrogant & had a short temper etc..leave it at that..
you know what I went through, having respect that you have done multiple martial arts, I did Muay Thai, Jiu Jutsu, Tae Kwon Do, Ninjutsu and some Jeet Kune Do. But at the end of the day I found Wing chun worked best for me, i think its just whatever works, for you but no need to throw insults.

I studied martial arts intensively over the years, beginning with Shotokan, Wado Ryu Karate and moving onto WIng Chun, like you when I had the brain of a fantasising 13 yr old I though Wing Chun was the 'most realistic martial art', but it didn't work in several encounters & my sifu was good! So i took up Jeet Kune Do, which actually worked better, much better! and the more I moved to MMA approach of modern times, like today, the more it worked...youre a gay chinese ego driven transexual dreamer

A lot of what Bruce thought came from WSL, so I wouldn't call him "pre-bruce". He kinda made Bruce what he was... WSL is very scientific and he challenged "mystical" kung fu masters himself. So I think you need to know that before you say he is like a person who "believed God created the world"
I agree with some of what you say, Wong Shun Leung was the best of the crowd, outside of what Bruce became finally...But His wing chun tho the best of those guys wasn't a developed three dimensional system..I mean wing chun guys, even the best don't last too long in MMA fights,even street ones..because their footwork & other components are dated and relatively rigid compared to more fluid boxers/thai boxers and street fighters..

Wing Chun's effectiveness is immensely reduced the moment you put on gloves. Traps, straight punches, and hand sensitivity, which is the basis Wing Chun all lose effectiveness. Wing Chun has no place in MMA, Wing Chun is much more effective than boxing in street fighting however, because of trapping and more direct punches. If you punch from the inside to the outside of your opponent, rather than the outside to the inside, you are using your elbow not your torso, and it's faster. Simple.
ps there is footage of a real fight between WSL and a skinny young extra with practically no skill but natural aggression, and Wong Shun Leung looks totally gay and uncomfortable, he actually got his ass kicked by a little teenage runt..and apparently was really pissed that all his training& 'knowledge' was garbage in a fight with a less than impressive stylist.. Master WSL exudes the confident, non cocky wisdom of an experienced and very successful martial artist who mastered the theory and techniques of Wing Chun. He also clearly has confidence in the system because he knew it worked for him many times in real fighting situations. I love watching anything on him - always the real deal Wing Chun instruction. He doesn't say no head movement, the translation is not 100% accurate. He's basically implying that you should not rely on dodging. In a real fight, wing chun intercepts the opponent and then guiding the energy. In Boxing, however, they tend to either dodge or take the hit
But don't let this limit what you can do; a lot of times in Wing Chun you shift your horse to evade the hit and intercept at the same time, then you guide with your hands and footwork.
that isn't so different from dodging, or slipping. it isn't just leaning over so you don't get hit. my instructor always told me if you evade right, you shouldn't need a block or deflection, they're there just in case alot of the time. a good example of this is a boxers "slip". granted slipping alone doesn't lend itsself well to trapping or grappling, but it works, and is often just as fast as anything else.
It is dodging but not simply dodging. Wing Chun also emphasizes interception with the opponent rather than simply dodging. Boxing can be killer, but often very dumb; that's why I kicked so many boxer's asses back when I was in high school
i agree it isn't perfect by any means. but i'd bet just as many boxers kicked wing chunners asses too. i think the point he was trying to make was that dodging cant escape the hand, with the redirected strike, but it doesn't look like there'd be too much power in such a short strike, even with your whole body behind it.
Check out Gary Lam. Sigung Wong's best student. His wing chun will speak for itself. He is in my opinion the best. Worlds beyond Phillip Bayer, Barry Lee, and the like. Go ahead and google him.
Well, I know Philipp Bayer personally... It is possible that Gary is better, but trust me, Philipp is really something... and his way to teach is very good! His students progress very rapidly,because he teaches exactly like Wong did. Gary, with his "Level" programms cannot claim that.

I have trained with Wan Kam Leung every year since 2000.He said he has fought many styles.I asked him which was the hardest.His answer was boxing.He was very certain and clear about that.
Yes... I had a teacher one time that said if you want to be really good at Wing Chun, then you should train in Western Boxing for a while also. Not only does it teach you to dodge and weave(which is in Wing Chun, just not talked about much), but the training that boxers do keep them in great shape. WC and Boxing a great pair!
I couldnt agree more with you except for learning to dodge it may be useful but relying on it may end a fight for you if you to weave into a fist. That is why its better to use ving tsun concepts of deflection and interception at the close range it is meant for and boxing techniques at a mid range with weaving ONLY at a mid range.
Wong Shun Leung was a great man with incredible understanding of fighting efficiency. Now Sifu Wan Kam Leung - Wong's lead student - has taken it to another level. Wong's teachings should not be underestimated by anyone, particularly if you think you are a proficient fighter. The speed, power and control both SiGung Wong and Sifu Wan has to be experienced to fully understand the depth of what is being said.

At the end of the day, Wing Chun is one of the most EFFECTIVE martial arts in a REAL fight. Which is what matters. Boxing and MMA can be effective in the ring, with gloves and rules and shit. But it won't be as effective in a street fight where anything can happen.
Wing Chun wasn't created for MMA and competitions. It was created for a real fight.

Read Bruce Lees book. almost ALL like 90% of his hand strikes are from western boxing. foot work from boxing and fencing. dont be dumb check it out. Boxers > wing chun. HE even credits boxing. And yea east to predict but you wont block or dodge in time. Western boxing is the best in the world when it comes to hand strikes.

Yeah just read my reply to kist420. It applies to both comments. Wing Chun strikes are weaker but faster. More street effective, but there is a reason they are not used in the ring. Because boxing hits harder, stuns better, it's more effective on a stunned opponent. But it's slower. To jab or hook a Wing Chun man is to be trapped. Boxing is a sport, designed around the use of gloves. You can't trap with gloves. Again, simple.

@cygroltd actually this was documented by the press in hong kong and it was a public fight. No dreaming involved. A lot of boxers have been taken down by VIng Tsun people. And I agree most Wing Chun does suck but not WSL Ving Tsun. Do your research and find out who Wong Shun Leung was and what his reputation is like in Hong Kong even today in the Marrtial Arts world not only in the Wing Chun world.

what would you know, as in an Alan Watt's book on Zen, I quote: "you can be a true Zen buddhist and still steal your neighbours oxen and make love to your neighbours wife"..at it's core Zen has a philosophy about seeing reality as it is, free of the ego & presumptions, which is Independent from Western presumptions about 'holy men' and 'morality'...In his martial arts Bruce was all Zen, and applied it's philosophy, though as a person he was arrogant & had a short temper etc..leave it at that..

you know what I went through, having respect that you have done multiple martial arts, I did Muay Thai, Jiu Jutsu, Tae Kwon Do, Ninjutsu and some Jeet Kune Do. But at the end of the day I found Wing chun worked best for me, i think its just whatever works, for you but no need to throw insults.

I studied martial arts intensively over the years, beginning with Shotokan, Wado Ryu Karate and moving onto WIng Chun, like you when I had the brain of a fantasising 13 yr old I though Wing Chun was the 'most realistic martial art', but it didn't work in several encounters & my sifu was good! So i took up Jeet Kune Do, which actually worked better, much better! and the more I moved to MMA approach of modern times, like today, the more it worked...youre a gay chinese ego driven transexual dreamer

A lot of what Bruce thought came from WSL, so I wouldn't call him "pre-bruce". He kinda made Bruce what he was... WSL is very scientific and he challenged "mystical" kung fu masters himself. So I think you need to know that before you say he is like a person who "believed God created the world"

I agree with some of what you say, Wong Shun Leung was the best of the crowd, outside of what Bruce became finally...But His wing chun tho the best of those guys wasn't a developed three dimensional system..I mean wing chun guys, even the best don't last too long in MMA fights,even street ones..because their footwork & other components are dated and relatively rigid compared to more fluid boxers/thai boxers and street fighters..

Wing Chun's effectiveness is immensely reduced the moment you put on gloves. Traps, straight punches, and hand sensitivity, which is the basis Wing Chun all lose effectiveness. Wing Chun has no place in MMA, Wing Chun is much more effective than boxing in street fighting however, because of trapping and more direct punches. If you punch from the inside to the outside of your opponent, rather than the outside to the inside, you are using your elbow not your torso, and it's faster. Simple.

Master WSL exudes the confident, non cocky wisdom of an experienced and very successful martial artist who mastered the theory and techniques of Wing Chun. He also clearly has confidence in the system because he knew it worked for him many times in real fighting situations. I love watching anything on him - always the real deal Wing Chun instruction. He doesn't say no head movement, the translation is not 100% accurate. He's basically implying that you should not rely on dodging. In a real fight, wing chun intercepts the opponent and then guiding the energy. In Boxing, however, they tend to either dodge or take the hit

But don't let this limit what you can do; a lot of times in Wing Chun you shift your horse to evade the hit and intercept at the same time, then you guide with your hands and footwork.

that isn't so different from dodging, or slipping. it isn't just leaning over so you don't get hit. my instructor always told me if you evade right, you shouldn't need a block or deflection, they're there just in case alot of the time. a good example of this is a boxers "slip". granted slipping alone doesn't lend itsself well to trapping or grappling, but it works, and is often just as fast as anything else.

It is dodging but not simply dodging. Wing Chun also emphasizes interception with the opponent rather than simply dodging. Boxing can be killer, but often very dumb; that's why I kicked so many boxer's asses back when I was in high school

i agree it isn't perfect by any means. but i'd bet just as many boxers kicked wing chunners asses too. i think the point he was trying to make was that dodging cant escape the hand, with the redirected strike, but it doesn't look like there'd be too much power in such a short strike, even with your whole body behind it.

Well, I know Philipp Bayer personally... It is possible that Gary is better, but trust me, Philipp is really something... and his way to teach is very good! His students progress very rapidly,because he teaches exactly like Wong did. Gary, with his "Level" programms cannot claim that.

I have trained with Wan Kam Leung every year since 2000.He said he has fought many styles.I asked him which was the hardest.His answer was boxing.He was very certain and clear about that.

Yes... I had a teacher one time that said if you want to be really good at Wing Chun, then you should train in Western Boxing for a while also. Not only does it teach you to dodge and weave(which is in Wing Chun, just not talked about much), but the training that boxers do keep them in great shape. WC and Boxing a great pair!

I couldnt agree more with you except for learning to dodge it may be useful but relying on it may end a fight for you if you to weave into a fist. That is why its better to use ving tsun concepts of deflection and interception at the close range it is meant for and boxing techniques at a mid range with weaving ONLY at a mid range.

Wong Shun Leung was a great man with incredible understanding of fighting efficiency. Now Sifu Wan Kam Leung - Wong's lead student - has taken it to another level. Wong's teachings should not be underestimated by anyone, particularly if you think you are a proficient fighter. The speed, power and control both SiGung Wong and Sifu Wan has to be experienced to fully understand the depth of what is being said.

Wong Shun Leung explained that when you hit to the opponent and you don´t get him you should not take back your fist. And it works... My teacher show´s it several times.

Thanks. But when you say it works, I hope you have actually used it in real combat, or at the very least all out sparring, not just theory. yes we do pradtise in sparring - only way of seeing what you re really capable of and yes we want to see our mistakes under stress condition - we do not use any protective gear and Philipp does not accept his teachers to escape pain ;)
