  • Love

  • I think Magnum PI is cool. Imagine this song came out before we had so many DVD sets and we had to wait for TV to air reruns like a bunch of suckers. *shudders*

  • In Soviet Russia, Five Folds Ben.....

  • I find it amusing that the acronym for their band is "BFF" and they broke up. :D

  • If you like this, you'll love Nile.

  • Just so cool !! even at 55 years old :-)

  • If I made a film this would def be in the soundtrack so cool :)

  • I bow down to Ben Folds and the Ben Folds Five's greatness. This really could be one of the top 10 bands ever.

  • Cool vid (i believe rick moranis directed),like the interplay between the projected background and the band members,.brilliant song also, like how the drumming sounds like fireworks being set off (triplets,i think you call them),and the piano melody/rhythm,a song about sibling rivalry.....

  • i've loved this band since i was 7 years old! i'm 20 now!!!!!! My mom and her ex bf smoked weed with the band when they came to Montreal years ago!!!! LOL

  • Anyone know Pauls number, we need some weed!

  • First time listening to BF5 in years...

I forgot how great these guys are.. the talent and originality in this band is unreal. there legends in my book.

  • Best days of my life mid 90s I miss and love you so much.

  • This sums up hipsters perfectly.

  • I really do think the Rockford Files is cool...

  • legend song! its been a long time since hearing this, we used to make up th word in part and sing them loud wen we were drunk, or after calling Paul for some weed...hehehehe!

  • sophomore year

    god i miss those days

  • @kabattese99 same here I miss Uni full stop.

  • This is the song that first turned me on to BF5. One of the best things to ever happen to me, musically.

  • one of my best memories was seeing them right before this album dropped.small ass club.all up in it.priceless

  • man, Ben was young then. Loved them then and still go to his shows now. Fantastic

  • "Call up Paul to see if he can score some weed." This song is a classic... whatever.

  • Classic.

  • Whatever and ever...... Amen.

  • been looking for this song for ages , thanks love it

  • I've love Ben Folds since I was 7!!!!!!!! This song is ingrained in my brain! some times i wish i was that way! what is Rockford files? Honor not happiness.

    FOREVER AND EVER AMEN!

  • @Danikaisburning Rockford Files was a pretty terrible TV show from the 70s that used to re-run late at night. It starred James Garner and, in my recollection, sucked.

  • @kauffmedia LOL ohhhh thank you!

  • @kauffmedia Actually Rockford Files was a pretty awesome TV starring James Garner

  • Pure brilliance

  • Watching "Whose Line Is It Anyway". lol

  • I haven't heard this for years - such an intelligently lyrical song and those harmonies are great. A very under-rated band.

  • See I've got your old I.D. and your all dressed up like The Cure.... Priceless!!!

  • in my top 50 ever!!!

  • This is an amazing song.

  • Ben Folds a true artist

  • In sparse points in space and time, a genius draws a canvas and throws it out for all of us to absorb. I want to just fish and cut bait, but I've got to ponder Ben Folds while I watch the ripples blip out from my cast.

  • oh no

  • wtf piano chat roulette guy right?

  • no, it's not him.

  • Love the way the middle 8's just like out of West Side Story! I love the way Ben wrote his earlier stuff, same creativity as the composers of the old musicals. Take Boxing for instance, that song should be in a show

  • Robert Sledge man, that bass line's got so much energy!

  • Really nice phrasing. Didn't Mr.F say that lyrics are just for holding down the tune? Rubbish I say, he's just shy. His words are always relevant, fun, interesting... And this album IS one of the best of all time :)

  • This is awesome. I didn't even know there was a video for this. Thanks for posting it. My mom used to listen to this album all the time when I was a wee lass. Most of the songs are burned into my memory. One of the best albums of all time, in my opinion. This song is great because it will always be relevant. It's applicable to so many people I've known.

    Sweet!

  • I love how sloppy, out of time, and garage band-like his recordings were. It was a nice break from the overly produced "pro-tools" craze that was happening at that time. The just sound like a "band." Jeez what a concept. I still think Ben's voice is kind of pearcing, but whatever...

  • This song was the unofficial anthem for The Age of Irony. Oh, how I wish I could step into a time machine and go live back then.

  • your name'd

  • i love you! ben you pown

  • What's better than "Clever"?

  • Reminds me of Deam Freidman - voice wise - you have to be in your 40s to know that name unless you are really into older music.

  • Lucky Stars -lol! He does sound like a lot like him!!

  • GAWD I hated Ben Folds for so long

now I really like him, he grows on you...like moss

  • Heh. My dad didn't much like Ben Folds at first, but now he loves his music. I fell in love with the music instantly though, so I dunno really.

  • Has anyone noticed how this video has hundreds of thousands of more views than the VEVO video? Makes sense.

  • oh man this takes me back! and the lyrics are what make them stand out!

  • @designerfiasco Agreed the lyrics, but also the music.

  • 0:14 *smirk*

i think that's my favorite part of this whole video :D

  • @katiekg13 throwing down the horns at 2:54 is great, too.

  • very dio of him

  • i'm with you there... maybe thats where the guy from "ok go" got it from

  • @bnfldsblows Everyone's entitles to thier own opinion but when you say things like "Ben Folds sounds like Britney Spears on PCP" and "I wish someone would drop Ben Fold's piano on him from a 7th story window" I feel compelled to respond. Have you actually listened to a full song by them? They really grow on you after repeated listening. Just dont be negative, okay?

  • this gave me flashbacks, thanks!!

  • I truly like Ben Folds more than the Beatles. I think they have more original approaches.

  • If you don't like it, you don't have to watch it.

  • honour not happiness..

    meh!? false dichotomy much!?

i mean, i know the context and love the song, but cant help but feel for the protagonist..

  • @lookin740 Unearned unhappiness, not honour not happiness

  • I know nothing about Ben Folds Five but I remember loving this song when it first came out (still do) especially the chorus. The close harmonies are great aswell, very Brian Wilson.

The only BFF related music I own is William Shatner's solo album, which is suprisingly good! lol.

Anyone recommend any other good BFF songs?

  • That's like asking to name "any number", LOL. On 2 of his solo albums "Rockin The Suburbs" and "Way To Normal" almost every song is even BETTER than this. But check out "Army", "Still Fighting It", "Dr Yang", "Free Coffee", and maybe "Annie Waits". Too many to choose. "Don't Change Your Plans" is also classic.

  • Good tune.

  • lol the sudden head turn at :46

  • Probably a bit too intelligent for you. Never mind some people get pleasure from it. I do for one.

  • @POLKATURKEY hehehe... pleasure

  • @guinlyone thanks Homer - reminded me to listen again - aaaaaahhh.

  • Or maybe you're being ironic (or are much younger than me) and your comment is really positive? I think BF likes to be told he's shit.

  • No, he's just a troll. He likes to make people get all riled up over something on the internet because it's funny. Just leave him alone or you will just add fuel to the fire really.

  • Comment removed

  • Their name is on the top left of the video player. you don't hear any sarcasm at all? I apologize on behalf of the Ben Folds FIve, "we are sorry you didn't get the joke" maybe you should go tune into your local pop radio station and get your daily dose of commercialized mediocrity and leave the forward thinking to someone else. suck-ass.

  • One of the best bands in these time period, that's who.

  • let me guess... you either listen to a) hardcore crap like Avenged sevenfold or b) rap. this is real music, which takes talent. I'd like to hand you the music to this, and listen to you play it.

    douche

  • That's so funny; that's the best you could think of. To SonofBrunhilde

  • One word; american.

Beatles were so un-american it made Liverpool proud.

Can't compare this stuff with the boys.

  • uh...everything they did was awesome

  • Hey, I think "Rockford Files" is cool!!

  • I remember seeing this video back when it was "new". I literally stood up and I was like, what the hell is this?! Been a hardcore fan since then...

  • I can definitely hear a Beatles influence in the music and the vocal harmonies. The beatles were the first that I know of to use the piano and fuzz bass combo. Check out the Rubber Soul and Revolver CDs. Ben is also an excellent song writer, just as the Lennon and McCartney were.

  • Good call - very tuneful, humorous stuff.

    I'm a big fan.

  • Amazing!

  • good song

  • They sound like Beatles right?

  • Do you even listen to the beatles

  • zaxzondark If you think beatles suck then you're an idiot

  • I think most pop/rock music is influenced by the Beatles. However the the "dooo do" harmonies they are doing along with the piano really bring it to the surface.

But also, think about the little break down in 'song for the dumped' when the singer is doing the "hi yi yiyiyi" (i dont actually know how to spell the sound he makes..)

    Beatles

  • I bought this disc the week it came out at the Coconuts Records in Calumet City, IL. Sha-BLAM.

    Still fuckin' solid.

  • What a great song!

We've all fought "the battle of who could care less" at one point or another in our lives...this reminds me of High School...was just coming out right around when I graduated =D

  • he's so bitter, I love it.

  • Top 5 albums of all time for me.

  • mmm... imi place mult

  • perfection

  • Great song.

  • i love them, goddamm i do!!

  • "Why don't we pitch it to the Franklin Fuckin Mint" --- best written lyric, right up there with "I saw a werewolf drinking a Pina Colada at Trader Vic's, his hair was perfect"

  • Ben Folds five are so fucking cool!

  • Comment removed

  • Rockford Files IS fucking cool !!1111!!!

  • Battle of who could care less? I don't care, my give-a-damn is broken

  • I read that on wikipedia haha

    (Whatever and Ever) AMEN

  • i couldnt care less.. ;)

  • uses more than 3 chords. disqualified from punk rock.

  • lol

  • punk rock uses 3? i thought two was their limet.

  • It's more of a jazzy punk rock thing. =]

  • don't give feedme bad rates jeeze. ben folds said that in an interview

  • at last.... i had a similar thing when i commented on a screamin jay hawkins clip.. i said "black music for white people".. many got all riled.. not realizing that that was the NAME OF THE ALBUM

  • that was directed toward feed me cool shit, btw.

  • you kinda missed the point.... duuuuuuuuuuuur

  • So far the band's most underrated hit.

  • Great song about relationship and being with a partner who becomes uninterested and bored with the relationship. I like the way Ben Folds writes songs from personal experience. I'm sure his xgirlfirends that he writes the songs about are p!ssed off as he always gets the final say as he's the one who writes the songs that everyone listens to.

    Good on him.

There's no place in this world for bored, appathetic partners.

  • did you censor "pissed"? or was that just for effect?

  • I wasn't sure if youtube would censor and block my comment if I used certain words and so changed it myself just in case.

  • reminds me of pot smoking in High School woot woot

  • lawl, i love this song.

  • i sometimes forget how long ben's been in the music business. his fingerprints are all over the 90's and today.

  • "general apathy and major boredom" get it? they're the sergeants in the battle of who could care less, heh.

  • Hate to be pedantic, 5rey67trhtrhtry65765, but seriously? "general apathy and major bordeom" are "sergeants"? Sergeant is a rank, as are General and Major. Maybe you meant "they're the officers in the battle..."?

  • i AM an officer... just kidding i'm another pothead

  • he didnt care nearly enough to be accurate. so he wins. and you lose.

  • the vid iz kikin ass

  • yeah, what an album!

no pretense, just good as it gets.

  • 2:53 :D

  • agreed ,my fav part too :)

  • is the bassit playing thriw a twin reverb?.. or silverface bassman?

  • GREAT Band....GREAT Album.

  • i'm in love with ben's little smirk at 0:14

i could listen to this song everyday forever.

  • I think Rockford Files is cool...

  • What an album man. What an album.

  • They were a cool band, lots of talent. I didn't think twice about them when i was 20 and they were popular, but I dig them now. They should make another album, ill pay attention this time. Anyways, I also hear a stereolab influence in this particular song.

  • i dug 'em back then, i love them even now

  • FUZZ BASS!!!!!

  • i think its funny how the song is about how a bunch of pot heads sit around and do nothing all day

  • I think it's about after you break up with someone, they act like they could really care less about shit. Sorta like a more upbeat "Selfless, Cold, and Composed"

  • great song but id have to say that brick s a better one in my opinion

  • Definite Beatles influence there, I love it.

  • such a well written song

  • this video is pretty cool. I obsessed over this song for awhile! Ben Folds Five is awesome

  • Their drummer looks like Greg Kinnear.

  • he does...i never noticed that...but it's more like a cracked out version of him...

  • i loooveee the sound of anyhting ben folds o:

    its like. so upbeat

how can you not liek it? o_o"

  • I'm locked onto the nineties I have to say rock on :3

  • well, yeah, that was the best stuff! Rock on, my friend!!

  • i could not agree more.

  • Hotel Lights is very interesting. i love their sound and darren jesse can still write a great tune.

  • 0:44-0:46 cracks me up for some reason

  • LOL!

  • hey do you guys have any suggestions for some music that would be related to this but a little different? I love Ben Folds, but want to branch out from him and don't know where to go.

  • I would sugest "The Dresden dolls" and the solo project of their singer, "Amanda Palmer". Ben Folds himself producted Amanda Palmer's CD, and the piano is very present in any of them...

  • Hm - I'd recommend "Refreshments" (especially songs like Banditos and and Blue Collar Suicide) and "The Verve Pipe" (mostly songs which AREN'T The Freshmen).

  • Hell yes!!! They both kick ass, "Banditos" is an excellent song! Good taste, man.

  • Haha, thank you! It's one of my favorites. (;

  • violent femmes have some good tunes. You probaly heard blister in the sum1,000,000 times and want to shoot yourself. Check out add it up, give me the car, kiss off. Kind of have that tongue in cheek appeal

  • I love the Violent Femmes
