  • @stopthelight I think she meant it in the same way she meant it for women. Guys trying their best to

    a) be funny, smart, etc. Whatever they think will charm a girl.

    b) be physically attractive.

  • damn is my first reaction wow it just so amazing

    frm another poet

  • We're all such shallow creatures.

  • Many today are depressed and some commit suicide over beauty. It is important... it is OK to look pretty. But is it OK to wear high heels to look sexy when a women is already tall? No because heels are a physical stress. I thought all women who are not slutty don't don't want to be objectified as sexual objects. Why else wear heels?

  • Beyond awesome ... Ladies, become yourself.

  • Omg I love this :D

  • My mom wrote a letter to her long-lost brother describing her children. When she got to me she wrote a paragraph about how beautiful I am. My brother is a genius, my sister is strong (I guess she can't be called "pretty" because she's overweight), my younger brother is growing up fast. And I am beautiful. What else could I possibly be? Being "pretty" is the last thing I think I am, the last thing I want to be, the least I could be. My future daughter, I will protect you from being "pretty".

  • YOU WILL NEVER BE MERELY... pretty. asdlfkjaslkglhdkf;ajlhgkfsaglkaf;.

  • Great stuff

  • i will be pretty.

  • this is absolutely AMAZING!!! so inspiring :)

  • Excellent

  • FANTASTIC!! Wonderful writing, Great performance!! Wish so many of us could've heard this wisdom from an outside source growing up. So thankful for the inside source that kept speaking it to me. Thanks Katie! Wonderful.

  • I love this poetry especially the last half, i listen whenever I'm down

  • I have this on my iPod, and I listen to it everyday cuz it is so freaking true.

  • @crzylbrlchick Do you know who won the year of this poetry contest? :)

  • @chandler101ify no. katie has commented on here previously, you might be able to ask her.

  • PRETTY AMAZING!

  • AMAZING!

  • i absolutely looooove how she delivered this it was amazing

  • the word pretty is 6 letters yes, but its only made of 5 letters.. the the t that is doubled is counted as one letter haha

  • "Not enough strangers found you suitably fuckable" ....that must have hurt many of us in the 'gina... Lol so true!!!! I love it very good poem!

  • this is positively amazing and wonderful :3

children everywhere should see this for sure :3

  • That speech was pretty ... AWESOME!!!

  • !!!BOO-FUCKING-YEAH!!!

  • Lol. This was great.

  • the people that dislike the video are just "pretty"

  • thanks to you i teach others that pretty doesn't mean = looks)))

  • @crzylbrlchick hey, my comment was purely humorous (well to me :$) but I had no intention of bashing this vid, I've acres ally watched this video quite a few times, some on English and also discussing this main problem so I do know all the problems we face today, I guess it was just a small mishap I seem to have noticed..

  • I never get tired of watching this...used the transcript in my master thesis...

  • @Cancerape

    fucking idiot

  • Wow I jus learned about SLAM poetry today ! I love it! This girl was great!

  • Whoa... Chills.

  • The passion she brings to this makes her the most talented, insightful, creative, BEAUTIFUL woman in the world.

  • Always gonna be my favorite slam poem!!!!

  • i just saw this thing talking about how girls up to 6 years old go on diets and wear make up because they dont want to be fat and feel they need to be pretty because their girls this sickens me and feel bad that my sister will haveto grow up with girls like this

  • great!

  • this poem is for girls who feel intimidated by everyone because they believe they arenot pretty enough to fit in. and cant except their self. the ones who go threw so much to look a certain way and paint makeup on them so their appearance God gave them can be more appealing but in the start you looked better without it. trust me i know i was that girl eager to be the IT girl. but then i understood that pretty wasn't all that cracked up to be .

  • I think this is amazing. I cried, because it hit a cord. I loved this.

  • I adore this. I love seeing words used this eloquently and powerfully. This is so heinously good! On a side note, there is nothing vulgar about her language here. It was honest. In my opinion dishonesty is far more vulgar.

  • this needs to have way more views

  • I'm a 29 year old guy and I feel my eyes getting wet. Damn. That's pretty amazing.

  • Pretty has 6 words......

  • @sillydramas you know, I normally deny/ignore these comments, but I just decided that this is WAY TOO EPIC OF A FAIL to let it lay in the pending box, going to waste. Congrats!!!!

  • @sillydramas actually it could be read as having 5 letters p-r-e-t(2)-y because the t is repeated. It's the common consensus on this piece.

  • @sillydramas Yes, but only 5 unique letters. Probably what she was going for.

  • so incredibly emotional, brought me to tears.

  • after watching it i was just quiet for a minute took it in the i was like WOW!!!!

  • Nice job!

  • This is more than amazing. This is PHENOMENAL. I'm still in high school and I've been through it and I see so many of peers around me who are going through it and it hurts me because I know it hurts them. :( I wish I could just show every last one of them this video.

  • i luv

  • Her mother made her get a nose job? Damn that's fucked up.

  • Using Rap & Poetry, I fought back against family racism towards my mixed race daughter. Crown court then banned that rap & poetry.

First ever British Rap-Poet to be given a "5 year Rap & Poetry ban"

2009-2014 (Official Court Papers Video on my channel)

    #FamilyRacism #Censorship #Injustice

  • Holy shit, this was fantastic.

  • This made me cry....wow, I'm speechless

  • Unbeleivable :O i love it :D

  • me like

  • I have watched and attended many poetry slams, but this, this is phenomenal.

  • FUCK YEAH!

  • "This is not about me. This is about the self mutilating clowns in the circus we have painted our selves clowns in"

  • Awesome. This is on a biblical level.

  • This is pretty awesome.

  • Amazing

  • this was the first slam poem i ever watched, and it inspired me to write and perform my own. Thank you, Katie Makkai. Check out my work on my page!

  • 101 people are just shallow hearted bastards.

  • well, she is pretty. I don't like this new age shouting poetry but for some reason this one seemed appropriate for the material. Maybe this is what they mean by 'slam' poetry. I like her nose ring too. :)

  • LOVE!

  • i love this

  • Omgosh I freakin loved this video. With the excpetion of one word.

    :))

  • This should have way more than 752,760 views.

  • YOU ARE SO WONDERFUL!!! I <3 YOU!!! !

  • Well expressed and said. We should all pay attention. How distorted and off track have we been lead by media? Time to wake up. We are not what we wear or look like. We are more than that. wwwdotbeyourbrilliantbestdotcom

  • This is awesome

  • If a beautiful girl said this it would be more effective. Ugly girls saying this just sound like they are jealous of pretty girls.

  • It's very inspiring until one takes a moment to reflect and realize that to be honest she might also add the following to her words to her hypothetical daughter:

You will go to sleep alone at night...sometimes weeping. People will mock you everywhere you go. You will feel like less than a person. You will be denied comfort and companionship even as you witness others benefiting from it all around you. You will wish you were dead.

It becomes slightly less inspiring then.

  • This is amazing!

  • Sooooooooooooooooooooo True. does anyone here know how to wear joy? i can sure wear the hell into a cocktail dress though

  • You ARE pretty, just as you ARE!

  • Pretty great message in a pretty great poem :)

  • brilliant

  • That was wonderful. I started crying...that was an amazing poem! So full of truth...

  • Holy shit. I am speechless. This woman is incredible!

  • thank you katie. thank you.

  • That was fcuking deadly! Every woman, everywhere should see this! Wow...

  • Oh my god <3

  • omg wow this is so amazing

  • This is POWERFUL! "You will never be merely, pretty!" Thank you!

  • woww. :p

  • I'm speechless (but can still type!) WOW!

  • "and everyone who will drift home tonight crest fallen because not enough strangers found you suitably f*ckable" .. dannnnggg

  • definitely going to show my child(ren) this someday.

  • I still freaking love this. So many women, girls of all ages, can relate to this. The sad truth of how we often feel about ourselves. And the advice she'll tell her daughters, that little ending, that was fantastic. Again, I love this...

  • 91 people have ugly hearts

  • @somolyy You might say, they're merely pretty. :P

  • FANTASTIC!!!!!

  • Incredible, this needs to be seen by everyone

  • Profound... good job. I have 5 daughters, and wow.. right on.

  • Wow. Just wow.

  • i can't stop watching it.

  • I saw Ryan Cole's video on youtube "My Suicide" and loved it so much that I bought his album on amazon. I'm just in love with it now. Great poetry.

  • This is so sensational! Holy shit. I want to be able to do that.

  • this made me cry!!

  • Rather than bombarding your child with messages like, "You're pretty as you are," GET THE FOCUS OFF HER LOOKS. Educate her. Get her involved in hobbies. Encourage her to get involved with charities and to volunteer. Encourage her to pursue her passions and interests. Even when we say, "You don't need to look like a model," our minds are still on image, image, image - and we're passing this onto our kids. Yet we raise sons with focus on their abilities, rather than looks. Keep that in mind.

  • If the explanation is too fucking annoying for you turn off the goddamn annotations. Fuck.

  • I´ve watched this more than 30 times now, over and over again and I still get this feeling when I watch it. This is amazing.

  • Tears of happiness.

Tears of sadness 'cause so few people understand this.

    Thank you dear Katie :')

  • 89 people are shallow bastards.

  • amazing

  • Whenever I feel sad I watch this because it is so inspirational I love it

  • Man... I just spent five minutes trying to write a comment worthy of such truth. That was *speechless*

  • i love this poem, the explanation isnt annoying, people are whiners!

  • I almost cried but then I thought, she just said what every human being needed to hear: the truth

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! SPREAD THE WORD TO ALL THE WOMEN IN YOUR LIFE! <3

  • Woah

  • I like to watch this so much :>

  • Oh my god, this was amazing. It really spoke to me - the anxiety and obsession about appearance, the way a mother desperately tries to show her love in a way that's not healthy but she doesn't know better...just wow.

  • Anyone know if there's a version of this video without the annoying little explanation of what she means by 5 letters at the end?

  • @raraavis42 There is a censored version, but no one else has uploaded another copy afaik. That "annoying little explanation" exists because I got fed up with seeing 10 comments a day that said nothing more than "pretty is 5 letters." If you would care to educate the unwashed masses yourself, go right ahead. I'll take it down when they stop - how's that?

  • @crzylbrlchick Thanks for the info. I meant nothing mean, though in retrospect there's probably a better word than 'annoying' to convey my thoughts. I guess you're just nicer than me, I've not got a lot of interest in educating the masses, regardless of their hygiene standards.

  • @raraavis42 It's less nice, more can't deal with the plethora of inane comments. Sorry for being a bit harsh with you, you just learn to be rather uh, firm with some of the people here thanks to those that throw around the words nazi and libtard like it's nbd (real comments, see below).

  • @crzylbrlchick Hey, no worries. I've got enough experience with online comments sections to know what's going on, and totally understand.

  • @crzylbrlchick hahah I love that pop up comment. I was annoyed as well at seeing all the wrong comments because people can't think for a second instead of commenting on how amazing this video is.

  • she is a goddess.

  • Right on sister!

  • Amen sister.

  • @inbeautytornpart

Dammit! the exact same thing happened to me except with some of my friends. After watching the video, one person, "she sure likes to yell" - to which I reply, you sure like to be a dumbass.

  • This is... Amazing. My aunt shared this video on facebook. I love it.

  • First it clicks, then it hits, then it sticks, remember(ing)...this.

  • yes, she's got it all figured out! :)

  • awsum poetry!!

  • wow, I love this!

  • @stopthelight It wasn't a jab at men... I've sat with my male buddies in bars and have often felt that they are just as much victims of the aesthetic culture as women are- as in- they're told what's attractive and what's not... and I wonder what we would all be attracted to if we had not been so completely indoctrinated by pop-culture. I wonder if we wouldn't be more fulfilled if we just did what we wanted instead of having our appetites "coached" by the images we're repeatedly subjected to.

  • @Cancerape yeah, and you should probably get back to your village before they realize their idiot is missing

  • "like the IV needle dripping liquid beauty into my blood" ...you are truly amazing, I love you!!

  • This said so much more then I could ever say, well..... Then I could ever say so boldly, thank you! ♥

  • Love.

  • Pretty, dyslexic.

  • @foolofaguyinlove How do you figure?

  • To go along with what she said towards the end: this poem is pretty fucking amazing. And it hit home pretty hard too. Infinite thanks :)

  • yup still amazes me

  • im printing this out and taping to my wall

  • I love this, I watch it when ever i feel self conscious about how i look, it reminds me that looking "pretty" will not make me a happier person and that I shouldn't care about whether or not men find me "suitably fuckable"

  • The problem with people who censor comments is they tend to have skeletons in their own closet. Selah.

  • @zetaphobica Irrelevant troll is irrelevant.

  • @crzylbrlchick Oh is she?

  • @DevinBranting Yes? Where does moderating comments suddenly equate having skeletons in ones closet? It's completely flawed and idiotic logic.

  • I guess I am "Pretty" offended at the off hand comment that men are creatures that sit in a bar and look at women as fuckable things. Dont flatter yourselves, why is she in the bar to begin with to make that judgement call? How could she have defined that 'quality ' of men without her own perceptive prejudice at hand? Meet her? No, rather, I would love to debate with her...

  • @zetaphobica

The fact that you didn't "hear" this powerful piece and rather became defensive

tells me that you are incapable of hearing.

You must hurt a lot people in your life.

When you look around you, is their a trail of destruction?

    That is a good sign.

  • @zetaphobica I think you miss the point when she said "AND where everyone will drift home tonight, and crestfallen because not enough people found you fuckable." She is not defining that as a gender difference, since I am quite sure that goes over and beyond how both males and females think, even if it with different wording.

  • @zetaphobica you completely missed her point with that line...

  • You don't count the t twice. DUR. And this is very inspirational.

  • Truly inspiring.

  • chills.

  • Awesome poem! One problem with the pop-up comment about the letters, though: "derp," from what I understand, is rather ableist.

  • If my kids even mention tattoos, or piercings, or cosmetic surgery....I'm disowning the lot of em -_-

  • @PizzaMadeMeDoThis Um... tattoos and piercings don't go in the same category as cosmetic surgery. They aren't done purely for vanity reasons, usually they're done as self-expression. cosmetic surgery is always about vanity/insecurity, and a tattoo is a symbol of your inner landscape made visible.

  • @Sei1863 Not always.. Sometimes it needs to be done.. Like the people who have breast reduction.. That's technically a "cosmetic surgery".. but it cause major back problems.. It's not about vanity..

  • People, "pretty" is only 5 letters. You don't count the "t" twice. Clearly, Makkai is not that ignorant. In fact she is quite brilliant. Those that can't come away with more than that ... are already lost to societal influences and don't much stand a chance to be genuine anyway. So who cares?

  • clap clap! very inspiring

  • AMAZING!!! THIS WOMAN UNDERSTANDS!!! PAIN AND EMOTION!

  • @crzylbrichick Are this video copyright? I'm starting a blog about slam poetry, and I wanted to put in a couple of videos of good poets. Is it okay to put this video on it?

  • i love her, she is my team mate's fav

  • It was incredible till she had to cheapen it by getting vulgar. Pity.

  • Welp.

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • amazing

  • The poem starts off with the beginning of the song Que sera, Sera. "Whatever will be will be" by Doris Day

  • it would b e so amazing to be able to meet her.

  • @nianinini check now.org/organization/conference/2011/speakers.html

  • Awesome

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • I wrote my college application essay about this poem. Needless to say, I got in. =]

  • This POEM IS > #FIRE I LIKE<
