Samuel Crossman, a non-conformist minister in the mid-1600s, wrote a six or seven verse Lenten poem that is now included in Anglican and comparable hymnals. Music is by John Ireland, who set it to music in response to a friend's request over lunch. Robin Mark kept the first verse; second and third are new, but still retain a 17th century flavor.
Wonderful!
