I'll take a shot at a slightly less obvious list:

1. Create "proof of concepts". A minimal working example of, say a chatbot, gives you a feel for an aspect of programming.

2. Learn Java, Python, C and Lisp. That should cover most styles of programming.

3. Learn to use a command line properly.

4. There are a lot of cool libraries out there. Use them! Image rendering or GUI building is pretty easy nowadays.

5. Try python if you haven't. It's a great "fallback language" for most tasks.

Another tip. If you are working with subversion control. Do not commit a new version to the library if it does not compile and run without errors. The other programmers on your team just might find a rope and hang you from the coat rack in the morning.

Thats why i hate programing...One thing i learn for programing is that people don't like to read the manual, so you have to include traps in the program and then explain how to correct the problem. Also you can't forget about the logic, and running time errors.
