A very sad but incredibly sexy song at the same time.A true masterpiece by a great artist. Every guy has these feelings but either we supress them or just do not say it to the other person.Elvis speaks of his feelings in their purest form. He does not sugercoat or anything, tells them the way he feels. The one time that he says "I want you" after the line "And you were fool enough to love it when he said", his tone is different cause he imitates the other guy...these are really nice details.

i thought this song was about a girl cheating for the longest time, then me and a friend of mine had a conversation about it and concluded its along of the lines of guy having a girlfriend and him being obsessed with her past boyfriends (or one night stands). its almost a jealousy song. thats what it means to me anyway but everyone opinion is different. definitly a very exciting song, one of my favorites that i've come across in my short life so far.
I think any guy who has ever had his wife/girlfriend cheat on him knows exactly what this song is about - and how (like one other poster mentioned) you could forgive, but it would always come creeping back.....
This a deadly stalker song of a left lover. He'd rather have her dead than with anyone. The definitive YouTube of this is with The Imposters at the Tim Festival. Masterful and will make sense to you its intent.
"If you've ever been cheated on by someone that you care about, this song will hit you like a freight train. Before looking up any of the facts, I knew Costello must have been cheated on by someone he cared about immensely. You can't write a song like this without experiencing it.
It's just so real. So accurate. Everything is going great, like at the beginning of the song and then the truth comes out and you're left wondering "Wow, did you just forget to mention it?" ...
...Then, although your logical side tells you to not hurt yourself with the details, some other part of you wants nothing more than to hear each and every horrible detail. You want to know if she liked it. You want to know if he did the things you do to her.
Then there's this overpowering feeling of wanting her. Of wanting to be with her......to reclaim what is yours? It's a strange and mixed emotion that is hard to explain, like so many other human emotions. ...
... And forgiving her.....the hardest thing you'll ever do. Because you will never entirely forgive her. No matter how much time passes and how faded the memory becomes, every once in a while it will creep back up like a disease and hurt you all over again."
I have this album, Blood and Chocolate, i used to play this song non stop, i was so in love with my girlfriend at the time, she kept on cheating on me, and i put up with it for years. i've got stronger now though.
I don't mean to sound crude, but this song is pure sex. The rise and fall, the way it goes slow and works to a climax and then shudders as the rhythm falls. Seriously, if you want to be a great lover, use this song to practice your rhythm and technique. It is an incredible, passionate song.
It's obvious the character in this song is in such a dark place he will kill someone...either her or himself. I have never figured out why girls like this song. I can understand liking Costello- but not this song. Unless chicks feel flattered ( or a sense of power) that a lost soul is obsessed with them.
It's a confession of a person's feelings. You ve never felt like your were just so in love with someone and felt like dyin when he/she didn't love you back?? It's not even about the rest of the lyrics..the repetition of the phrase "I want you"...When you experience unrequited love for somebody then all you want to say is "I want you".."Nobody will ever want you or love you more than me"..That's what it's all about..It's not about flattery or unhealthy psychosis.
I am a "chick", and I can tell you that it works the other way, too. Both sexes do those things, so, although Costello is a man, I sing with him and think of someone I knew once.

Yes I have, and the thought of "him undressing you - or you undressing him" still kills me after a couple of years.
In my life it still ranks as the hardest emotion I have ever had to deal with. Mr. Costello has captured this perfectly in this song.
Bloody women!

@ShadyOscura nailed it, and its magnificently powerful, if you can relate to the feelings that go with the songs, it's horrific.

yes his best in my opinion.
good slide show - well better than blank screen so thx for taking the time.
i first heard the song in an early rachel weiss movie.
it may have been called i want you - it certainly had the song in it enough -.

This is Evlis Costellos best song EVER! It really shows the psycho socialpathic side of him. My favorite!!!!
lavishpuppy21 3 years ago
how so? he seems to be showing unbridled emotion throughout the song. not much of a psychopathic tendency...
