@trafficjam10, well to start with. Tom Morello never took guitar lessons and so he didn't really learn that. Second, most people just learn that on the way, not like:

let's learn strumming (that's how I learnt it and it works for my friends). And last but not least, when playing most rage songs it sounds better to only downstrum and if you watch videos of them and focus on Thom you can also see him downstrumming most of the time. So shut the fuck up! This dude's sound is good.
