If I were Jon Opshal, I think I would object to Bill Harris calling me by my first name. I would also object to him calling me by my surname. I would object to him addressing me at all. Jon Opshal is a better man than I am for tolerating Bill's matter-of-fact, "tell-it-like-it-is," rambling, shrugging bullcrap lecture. It's satisfying to listen to Jon's sharply contrasted response: a cogent, intelligent, truthful, and very generous reply.

Bill Harris, while "lying low" in 1974, was caught shoplifting a trivial item from Mel's Sporting Goods in LA, thus blowing the SLA's cover and leading to the famous shootout where six of his "comrades" died. You might think that he'd be mortified, even thirty years later, by his own stupidity, but no, he's still shrugging it all off. It's also worth mentioning that it was Emily who actually shot Myrna Opshal, and her tears might be real, or might be just more of her special brand of deceit.

Having met Bill Harris and his wife while exploring the motives of my major advisor from Oberlin, I can't say that he is as unlikable as to warrant what would please you. This isn't to hesitate in re-iterating that if he were black he would have been treated differently. Perhaps we'd have seen Bill's teeth being identified in a pile of ashes. I would sumbit that as long as our justice system is as broken as it is, we will remain in the "land of De Freeze" as opposed to where I'd like to live.

Playing God was what the SLA were doing, and espousing phony revolution. The simple fact that they went after a Hearst made the whole thing questionable given that not all people of wealth are as foul and nasty as some factions make them out to be. George Hearst when he was operating the largest gold mine in the western hemisphere was quite outspoken that he felt there was a responsibility that comes with power. He built tne mining school at Berkeley to spread the wealth not squander it. Ironic.

The sad fact of this variety of justice and the ensuing circus - now reopening starring arthritic elephants jumping through flaming hoops, is that Sara Jane never won the status of the others in Patty's book now proven to be quite accurate in it's account. I'd add that her co-author's book Collision Course about the Andrea Dorea and the Stockholm is as accurate as Every Secret Thing. I recommend both books for some interesting reading. There was a document that had the SLA visiting someone in a California jail when they were in fact robbing the bank in Carmichael. It worked to create enough doubt to let him and Emily walk for murdering Myrna Opsahl. What Bill Harris failed to digest once the government reopened the case and proved that document was a forgery, is that he became an accessory to at least 2nd degree Murder. His concern is the it was his ex who bungled the shotgun not he.

A little monster is still a monster and requires no monsterizing. If Harris were black he'd be on death row. He'd have been there thirty years ago.

Notice how all of their statments were about how they feel and how they are affected. Criminals like these don't even know that they do that (that they are like that). They don't see that they are actually different from most people.
