I used to listen to KMET 94.7 in 1980 and 1981 when I lived at Ft Ord CA every time I went near LA it was an AWESOME radio station and I am sorry to hear its no longer around... as 94.1 WYSP Philadelphia ROCK radio station is gone to all sports ~ SUCKS the BIG ONE!

2:23 "K-METAL" (YEAH!!!) USED TO LISTEN TO THE MIGHTY METAL SHOP WITH JIM LADD EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT MAN! THAT'S WHEN KMET PLAYED THE BEST DAMN HEAVY METAL IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!!!
THIS IS A "GREAT" TRIBUTE TO THE MIGHTY MET. KMET 94.7 WAS "ALOT" OF BIT OF HEAVEN BACK IN THE DAY IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. MAN THOSE WERE THE DAYS FOR SURE AND MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE BUMPER STICKER UPSIDE DOWN. MY BROTHER AND I PUT IT ON OUR MOMS CAR.
@MrMegaFredzeppelin DUDE, YOU ARE AWESOME MAN!!!!! THIS IS A GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE MIGHTY MET!!! THIS WAS MY STATION BACK IN THE DAY!!! CYHTHIA FOX LOOKS LIKE A BABE!!!
LONG LIVE THE MIGHTY MET!!! 94.7 KMET!!!! WHOOO-YA!!!!
@MrMegaFredzeppelin Remember when Jim Ladd used to play the live version of J,Giles band "Musta Got Lost"?I was I teenager, and I LOVED that shit! One day i called KMET while getting ready for school (7th grade) and asked them to "rock" Fontana, but could they do it soon because i had to go to school, and after the song was over i heard " KMET rocks Fontana"....that was so fucking awesome at the age of 13!!
Man that was awesome!!! Thanks for posting, I remember the day music died in So.Cal..They(KMET) just kept saying...four more..when it was 4 days to the end, then 3 more...after the last day of the countdown we got....the Wave???? Pure Sadness!
Awesome heavy metal tunes during the week and Dr Demento and Harrison's Mike on Sunday nights. Many of the successful LA big hair bands of the time owed much of their success to the Mighty Met. WHOOYA!! \m/
I still have the clear "Colorforms" type plastic Tuner marker plastered right over 94.7 on my vintage 1978 Kenwood KR 9600.... The highest output Receiver Kenwood ever made. 160 watts rms per channel. That's 320 Watts total!!! I bought it at Cal-Stereo in Canoga Park. Can anyone say Rock-N-Roll?????? You Gotta FEEL the Music.
Jim ladd, is there nobody that he didn't interview? The answer is no!! He interviewed everybody. Jim and "The Burner " Mary Turner, they must of spoke to everybody in Rock and Roll at one time or another. The mighty Met 94.7 - R.I.P. WHOO-YA TO YA.
Wow! JUST found this and met a guy today on Metal Music Archives.com who has a KMET "RUSH" Bumper Sticker, I dont even remember them making Band Stickers! We've been reminicing about Paraquat Kelly ("The FISH Report" :P), "The Burner" Mary Turner (whos on KLOS now with...), Jim Ladd and his All Metal Show "The KMETAL Shop" w/ "Lucifer LaRock" (One of the 1st all Metal Shows in the Nation) where I 1st heard Metallica, Maiden, Queensryche and so many more! And was a HUGE Dr. D fan! :D
Listened to the MET all the time in my hippie days in '72 or so when I lived in Venice. Sooo many good memories! I wish there were some stations now days like that one.
I must have been living in a bubble. I am 48 and grew up in LA but never really listened to this station. I was pretty much a KROQ listener and in more recent years Indie 103.1 which went under last year. Who is the band that's being played in this clip?
@Goatskull - hehe, I'm 47 my friend, YOU were one of the "New Wavers" like my friend who is 37 ;) This is where me and my "Rocker" friends dial stayed, between KLOS and KMET (though I WISH TO GOD I listened more to KWEST, they played alot of Prog :D)-and the song on the clip (at beginning) is one of Jim Ladds faves, "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood. Now I cant stand Radio, very sad :( Though you may want to listen to Jim Ladd and his show called "Headsets", I've forgotten what night its on?
@mvunit3 - Actually I was more into straight up punk rock than I was new wave but yeah, I suppose that's what KROQ listeners were called;) I guess it's all a matter personal preference. By my senior year in HS ('80) I just wasn't listening much to what now would be considered "classic rock". At the time, KROQ simply played more of the stuff I liked. Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney On The ROQ) was my favorite show the I did think he was a but quirky.
@mvunit3 Sorry to drag this but I ran out of space. My tastes were along the lines of The Ramones, The Clash, Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, Velvet Underground etc. The Roq just seemed to be the station that would at least give some attention to that music.
@Goatskull -sorry for the mistake, its funny you said that you were more of a "Punker", when I listened to the "Kmetal Shop" at work @Barros Pizza in Diamond Bar, there was a friend 15 years younger than me that was into Punk/KROQ and Rodney :) But he liked when the KMET show played Crossover and Thrash :) Yup, there was a time that KROQ and AOR Radio was on the cutting edge, now its "cookie cutter", very sad :( By the way, everyone thought Rodney was a bit "quirky" ;)
OutSTANDing video, glad to revisit it! Can't tell you how many elements of my life in SoCal are represented here. CaliFFornia World Music Festival, I even remember the intentional misspelling (and the pre-rolled lid of doobs my buddy with the broken leg smuggled inside his cast!), The Outlaws played at least a 15-20 minute version of "Green Grass and High Tides" that day. I could go on and on and on...
In my family, while big sis listened to KHTZ, the boys listened to KMET and maybe KIQQ.
Sunday night was Dr. Demento. As a six year old kid, there was nothing more subversive than listening to that show. I think it was the only time in my life that I didn't dread Sunday nights!
Rapuda,Rapuda the beauda...The sound L.A. and "Gonzo" shreded SoCal today w/the return of the mighty met..Epic,friggin epic.Who else wanted KLOS to let Ladd,Fox,Coburn and Westwood join in the party. To bad Mary "the burner "Turner Wasen't there as well. The way FM radio should be ALLthe time.
Yeah, KMET - 94.7, little bit o' heaven. Best rock radio station I've ever listened to; still listen to Ladd on KLOS, but that whole group had great chemistry. They had a KMET-for-a-day thing on 100.3 today. Damn, brought back some great memories. Mighty MET - you'll not be forgotten. Whoo-Ya!!
I have a bunch of old Mighty Met stuff. In fact, this video looks like it was made from my stuff. I even went to that California Worlds Music Festival and even have that show program. Yep, my dad took me when I was just a munchkin.
Nope - it was definitely Whoo-Ya! What an awesome, fun, memory filled Friday - thanks to the Sound in LA for bringing back so many wonderful peeps and clips. Haha, Margarita Mondays and the Friday Fish report - WAY funny! And the good Dr. Demento who should DEF be back in LA. Rock on!
Paraquat Kelley and Mary "The Burner" Turner and F-ing FISH REPORT!!!!!!!!! The absolute BOMB!!! Do I ever miss that! 2 Pocket Perch and 3 Suckers!!! WHOO-YAAA! Long live the Mighty MET! Dave from Mississippi!!!!!!
After all these years I still lament the loss of KMET. Doing my homework in my room with the golden glow of my clock radio. Nowadays, I almost never listen to the radio. It's crap. Ah, yes....a little bit of heaven...
I have the Concert Guide also... great memories. I also have the LA Times article of KMET's last day on the air.... That was such a greta radio station at a greta time in my Rock n' Roll life....
PUT THE TAPE ON PLEASE WOULDTO HERE IT WENT OUT WITH ONE OF THE LADYS MET EVERONE GREAT PEOPLE.WONDER WHER THERE AT MOW LOVE TO HERE THEM TOGETHER AGAIN THANKS FOR THE VID whoooyatoya
KMET was the best all around FM station ever. I have hours and hours of their material including fish reports and the day they went off the air. They actually had to go to KLOS to say farewell to their fans. Dr. Demento shows on Sunday evenings was a blast. Whooooya!
Too Cool. I remember listening to the Met for hours, you just left the dial glued. With all the time I spent listening to Jim Ladd and Mike Harrison I am surprised I ended up on the right side of the fence politically.
I still have a copy of the Woodstock album I won by calling into Paraquat Kelley's show. Had to know what the colors of the Olympic rings symbolized. I should dig it out and see if I left the stickers and stuff they sent with it.
he day the music died is an understatement! KMET rocked my world..best station ever. remember Gonzer's Grill? what was Jim Ladds show called??? harmonica something?? Thank God he's still around
KMET enhanced my life from the time I first tuned in in 1969 until it left. Brother Doyle all night, Jeff Gonzer, "Mounds" Turner, B. Mitchell Reed...It was a Little Bit of Heaven and helped rock me through high school when it and I were new to it all. It was the flagship for Southern California Rock and I miss it and it's spirit. Thank you for putting up this tribute. Rock On.
I have the farewell on tape. The whole gang had to go over to KLOS because they were booted on Friday afternoon and had no time to bid farewell. It was a really sad day but to be honest they were running out of steam and their ratings were tanking. I was an avid fan and recorded many hours of their shows and just converted many to mp3. If any KMET staff ever read this...
Thanks from the heart for all your efforts in providing the best damn entertainment since the Wolfman Jack show in the 60's.
We have our KMET in the bay area its The Band 103.7 FM. Wow 94.7 the Wave has been around for 22 years while KMET lived on for 18 years. I hope you live on in Web Radio.
KMET was the BEST rock station ever. I'll never forget the Friday night bonfire parties with Jim Ladd and his " Get the Lead out " show cranking from everyone's cars. Funny thing is now I know exactly why no matter what else he would play, every Friday night he always made sure he played Dazed and Confused and then an hour later or so, No Quarter. You can burn and entire joint before that record ends! Ah those were the days.
What great memories.. I worked with Jack Snyder for awhile and just remember we would play Hearts song Baracuda all the time cuz it was so long so we could go out and 'smoke'.. LOL.. Often wondered what happened to Ronnie Burnstein, a friend of Jacks? All the concert limo rides. Carol, Jack, Ronnie and myself. OMG so much fun and priceless memories.
Thanks Captain ... What a nice surprise to find this tribute! I still have stickers and Jim Ladd and Dusty Street live forever in my heart! I recorded several tapes during the last days, have about a dozen "Head Sets" shows and miscellaneous on cassette. Hope you get images and can do another tribute! I've done some drawings w KMET buttons in them - give me a shout if you want to include them, I'd be honored :) Barb
So did I. I still have my KMET Keychain like the one pictured in this Montage, as well as a couple of signed stickers from Jim Ladd! I wish I still had my Immoral Minority button, though. . . . KMET will always live as far as I'm concerned!
