I believe also that he was more of a natural surrealist than influenced by anything exactly surrealism. Synthetic cubism is a precursor to surrealism definitively dadaism. The so called classical work is dream like. There is Spanish brand of surrealism always there and then later in 1920's and 1930's made manifest, cut loose, fed by the times.
For what its worth I think it stops here. I agree somewhat with John Berger in his book on Picasso that Picasso the creative artist, in concentrated form, ended around 1945. It was that he desired turmoil and the threat of death, high tension of the times, or it may have simply been his age, but his work looses its strength as the war retreated.
Reading a biography of Picasso at this time, I have been looking for the account of his relationship with women. This film is excellent in that respect, as well as an account of his Art. I do have trouble liking Picasso or even appreciating his creations because of his treatment of women.
