  • haunting

  • Superb

  • very nice version of this great song!

  • great, i love it!!

  • Tiocfaidh Ar La!!!Solidare from the Netherlands.

  • Brittania's Huns refer to the fact that many to most of the modern English descend from Saxons and other Germanic people. The lyric is basically pissing on them comparing them to their German cousins whom the English always referred to as barbaric and bloodthirsty.....Ironic from such a peaceful nation such as England xp

  • @realnetprofits as a geneticist this is untrue......the english may well be culturally hugely influenced by germanic cuture.....but their DNA has all the hall marks of brythonic speaking ppl like the welsh and cornish of the west.....this is the sweet irony.....APART from east anglia, parts of east england....most english have a large celtic/pre celtic ancestry.....hence why their treatment of the celts was hypocritical

  • @3tangle3 Yes I have been reading about this as of late. I had always heard they were "Saxonite Goat F@&%#&$," but as you pointed out they are of largely Celtic stock as well. Irony indeed. Thanks for the correction.

  • @realnetprofits heddwch/ peace...its not rlly these guys faults....humans are easily deluded....we know nothing rlly of reality :D......except love seems a good thing lol

  • @realnetprofits the word british have nothing to do with thr germanicised english

  • @realnetprofits Huns referes to aggresors from the east. Like the english called the germans in the first/second world war for huns.

I dont get whats so ironicall whit british having celtic/germanic ancestry..

  • There are a number of errors in the printing of the lyrics, but part of that is due to the fact that Shane makes a number of mistakes with the lyrics, as he often does. I love his singing, but he often doesn't remember lyrics.

  • I think this is my favourite of many fine versions of this beautiful song. Shane MacGowan obviously was sober when he did this--his voice is so clear, so pure, focused and intense. He is just brilliant. Pray that this great but troubled musician becomes healthy and lives a long and happy life, because many people love him.

  • Yes, and in life they are huns

  • Excellent rendition. Thanks for posting.

  • Re. "Huns": The Huns were of course a Germanic tribe . Apart from the fact that the English royal family were of German descent, the Irish have always identified the English with the Germans - they are often referred to in songs as "the Saxons" (another Germanic tribe that once dominated England). The modern Irish word for an English person is "Sasanach" (Saxon). Which is ironic because they never came near Ireland during the Saxon era, it was the Normans (French) who first invaded Ireland

  • beautiful resopnse....song rules over the dragers of of old history...

  • eirin go bragh!!

  • i like the way when he says "they flung out the flag of war" there is an irish flag flying

  • Thanks for posting that. I'd never heard that version with Shane. I agree too less Shane, but we take Shane when and as long as we can get him.

    It's Beautiful.

  • Too less Shane in it:C

  • I just love this song.

  • Going deaf... Me to I am going to miss the sounds of my kids and my music.

  • great song...powerfull

  • Comment removed

  • That is a powerful song, and Shane rocks.

  • Fuck yeah... now Shane knows how to do it right!

  • it is def "huns"

  • So, um...why are the RCMP marching in this video? They weren't anywhere near Dublin in 1916!

  • @imaccuish yes I noticed that along with the few lyric mistakes.... But the music is good...

  • las islas malvinas argintinas

  • The use of Huns is because the Easter uprising (which the song is about) happened during the war with Germany, and calling the British "Huns" is about saying the occupying British troops were no better than the Germans.

Also, the lyric in verse 2 should say "no battle drum"

  • @MFA1971 right on the money my friend...

  • Yep its HUNS..

  • I suppose that Britannia´s huns refers to the fact that there were many german soldiers especially from hannover and hesse in the british army of the 18th century. They fought in the colonies in north america as well as in ireland

  • Victory to Óglaigh na hÉireann

  • Óglaigh na hÉireann

  • It's spelt Britannia

  • dont worry about the lyrics, it was sung with such feeling it could have been in japanees and the message would have rung through, beautiful, moving song isnt it ?

  • I occasionally perform this song but not in public as my wife is Irish and says you can't sing it if you don't have an Irish voice. Stivell proves otherwise so thanks. The history of England in Ireland is something we English should be ashamed of (indeed, many of us are) but the Catholic Church also denied ordinary people many freedoms.

  • Love the Pogues, Love Stivell, great mix!

  • Where the song goes 'Brittania's huns' you made it 'Brittania's Sons'. Is that by mistake?

I actually like your version better.

The British soldiers were just poor guys, often forced to enlist, hoping to survive, trying to support their families back home. It is not them who were to blame for the oppression of the Irish people.

Blame and shame on the British government and Royal House for this.

  • @samopdrift . The working people of the world have to wake up and stop serving the interests of the elite

  • celtic brotherhood! I love this song especially sung by a Breton and an Irish.

  • the dubliners version is also very good- luke kelly's vocal really suits this song

  • powerful song

  • Wow, this was wa-ay cool!! Thanks!!!

  • beautiful nancy.. go raibh maith agat

  • what a tune!

  • C'est une très belle chanson, vraiment très belle ça ma donner les larmes aux yeux !!

  • O god's get over it!!!! Let it be..

  • A few points: here Alan's sings "rightfully high" (the original is "right proudly high over Dublin town"); you have "right from behind". He also kind of mangles the last stanza, skipping "men" (the line is "i parted then with valiant men whom I ne'er shall see more") and singing "through and through" for "to and fro in my dreams I go"... but considering that English is his 2nd language he does a great job (Alan's French).

  • Thanks Nancy!

  • Great pictures and fantastic version of a very cool and meaningful song! 10 stars from me!

  • I feel about 12 again - this was the first version I ever heard.

Britannia's huns/sons - I agree about 'huns' being the version most people sing, but when songs pass into the oral tradition changes happen.

    Just an old folky, me

  • great music, greatings from germany

  • Found the 'bigotry' & 'Fascist' comments interesting. 1918 Irish elections returned a majority of Republicans and overall support for Irish independence, so what happened to democracy?

  • Thanks for posting, Nancy. One lyric correction: It's not "Brittania's sons" but "Brittania's Huns."

The British in WWI referred to the Germans as Huns, so the lyric here contains special derision and scorn.

  • Indeed. The version sung here was strung together by parish Canon Charles ONeill in 1919 from earlier ballads. Many Irish were still outraged about Sulva and Sedd el Bahr, two "Irish" landing zones during the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915, in which the under-supplied 10th (Irish) battalion and the Dublin Fusiliers had suffered heavy losses (and essentially served as fodder for the Turkish guns).

  • y becos' the british Royal Family are after all - german

  • @bubbadog220

"Brittania's Huns" -which are indeed the correct lyrics- still surprises me. In 1916 the English were figthing the Germans and germany was actually supporting the uprising, e.g. with weapon transports. It seems odd therefore that germans were figthing for the British, as "Brittania's Huns" seem to indicate

  • @bubbadog220 lol, I think the editing was for any English who might look in. It was obvious he sang Huns, and rightly so.

  • @bubbadog220 the word huns has also been kept in use due to anglo saxon connections of the english in culture and language..even though to be fair genetically majority of DNA is much older from celtic/pre celtic times . I am a geneticist btw lol

  • @3tangle3 cheeder man gu bragh

  • oh I forgot to end my sentence with "lol" lol

  • He can't substantiate anything. He can't even read. He didn't understand the sentence about the Limerick Jews being welcomed INTO CORK. I would ask him about the gate to Palestina being closed to the Holocaust refugees but he knows nothing about it

  • 16881873, can you substantiate you claims of bigotry against myself? You would want to be hyprocritical would you? perhaps some more comment ending in lol would enhance you inflated sense of snobbery you reveal in each arrogant comment, all i can see bitter fellow highlighting youth, contradicitng himself and dismissing others comments without first citing evidence to prove your own....."lol"

  • You can't persuade a bigot to admiting that he is one. It's impossible.

  • Imperialists of all kind have an everlasting habit of labeling anyone who dares to fight for freedom as "facists" but it's only propaganda. That's what is "predictable", "redundant" and "plastic".

  • You want to fight Imperialism ? Then destroy The Vatican who raped, pillaged and looted the world, much more than any individual nation state's Empires ever did.

  • I don't want to fight anything. I don't need it. I just want to live my life believing in what I've chosen in my own, free country. Thanks God I have a chance to fullfil these dreams and so have the most of the Irish people but you seem to be bothered by it. So who is a "facists" here?

  • When have I denounced any Irishman or woman, apart from those who tried to overthrow democracy by bomb and gun ? These bigots are "fascists". There is no other term to describe them.

  • So why are you so obessed with this song? It's not about bombs nor overthrowing democracy.

  • I'm not obsessed with this song, I only originally posted its derivation from The Moorloch Shore. Bigots them attacked me on here for some reason. lol

  • Just look into a dictionary and check the meaning of a "bigot" word. It doesn't include the adjectives "Catholic" nor "Irish". You don't have to be them to be a bigot. Then read what you have written again and ask yourself if you aren't one. In my opinion you are.

  • Show me one statement from that I have written is "bigoted" Just one will do. I'll accept your apologies when you can't. lol

  • I'm still waiting on where I made bigoted comments about Catholics or the Irish. I'll accept your apologies when you can't show me when or where. lol

  • Choose one statement yourself because they are all bigoted

  • It is you making the foundless accusations of bigotry against me, so the floor is yours to prove it. Show me one example. You won't be cause you can't.

  • so show me a sentence proving that "bigots them atacked you on here for some reason"

  • Still waiting on even the one example of bigotry from me. You're taking your time.

  • Wasn't what you have written about the Vatican bigotry?

  • The Vatican has raped, pillaged and looted the world. How do you think it got so rich ? Are you even attempting to deny that irrefutable fact ? Are you also seriously calling that a " bigoted" statement ? lol Dear, oh, dear !

  • it's just a traditional tune it's not Protestant nor Catholic, it only depends on text added to it

  • You're correct in one aspect. It is indeed a traditional tune, but one which originated in the Protestant Ulster-Scots community. I don't mind the Irish borrowing it. lol

  • and do many Protestant Orange songs commemorate the Easter Rising?

  • Why would Protestants commemorate the rise of Irish Fascism ? I don't know what that has to do with the song The Moorloch Shore ? Maybe you'll enlighten us.......

  • would'nt it be your fine self who would enlighten us? You were the one who said the foggy dew was a rip off? Facism? Hmmmmm, atrificial borders, gerrymandering of votes, pogroms, torture, state sponsored murder etc etc. Im having a wee bit of trouble finding the facism in the idea of a free Ireland, need a wee bit of help, listen to Dev's reply to Churchill's huffy condemnation of Ireland neutrailty

  • The same old predictable, redundant pish from an irrelevant plastic paddie with no substantial education on Irish history. The fascists of 1916 tried to overthrow democracy, just like their bigoted afterbirth in 1969. That's fascism in anyone's language. Maybe you don't understand the term ? Perhaps the Nazi Sean Russell would understand. lol Pogroms ? Maybe the descendants of the Limerick Jews could tell you ? Torture ? Perhaps the relatives of Ireland's Disappeared would know ?

  • Are you saying the Irish People didnt want a free Ireland? That it was imposed on them? The Limerick Jews who were welcomed into Cork? Torture? yes Castlereagh had plenty. Perhaps the Romanian families in Belfast could enlighten us too. And plastic Paddy? Yawn, if I attacked Zionism am I a plastic Palestinian? But what if it attack Zazism? Does that make me a plastic Jew? and personal attack in reference to education is scrapping the barrel a wee bit, no?

  • The Limerick Jews who were "welcomed" in the city ? Oh, dear ! During The Troubles, the fascist IRA murdered more innocent Catholics than the British Army and Loyalists combined. You're only 23, still enough time to get an all-round education on Irish history instead of boring us all with narrow, bigoted, and most importantly, unproven drivel . The Wolf Tones aren't eminent historians, you know ? lol

  • never came across alan stivell, great voice. glad i checked this vid out

  • FUCK THE BRITS

  • Incredible! This video tells you everything three times. You hear the song, you read the lyrics and if that's not be enough you can still look at the pictures (in case you don't know what "ride" means: they show you a horse. Oh, the Liffey is a river!)

  • well done

  • well if i was to choose my personal top 3 versions of the foggy dew that would certainly be second, behind Damien Dempsey's version and this version. :)

  • every version of this song is spine tingling. you could never choose a superior version could you?

  • I admire the sentiment but I could actually :)

Luke Kelly's version with The Dubliners.

  • this is the first verson i understood
