I grow gourds and I pollinate them myself. What works best for me is a Q-Tip. Gourds have both the male and female flowers on the same vine. I just take the Q-Tip and rub it on the male pollin. Then I rub it on the female flower cone. Works eveytime. I grow different kinds of gourds so to prevent cross pollination by the bee's, I use little twist ties to hold the petals of the flower closed after pollinating. Then the bees can't get at it.
Oh, thank heavens! I thought I was going to have to go out and buy a special pollinating brush or something. Thank you for the video. I didn't k now it was that simple.
I grow bell peppers, tomatoes and other various vegetables indoors, so hand pollinating is the only way they will produce fruit. I have tried both methods the video suggests and yes they do partially work but what works the BEST is an electric tooth brush. I works 100% of the time and every flower I pollinated produced. I use a Phillips sonic care tooth brush, and use the plastic side of the bristles to vibrate right near the flower.
I do not know if you ever check back to see the comments on this video as it is a couple years old.....But anyways..
Wanted to say thanks for this video, very well planned and video taped. Let me guess, it took only two tries to get it perfect! (Ha Ha)
I did look at your other two videos and was tempted to buy some bracelets to help the cause, but there was that Don't Ask Don't Tell Ad in there with it, which is a policy I do not support.
I didn't see anything come off the buds. You sure this works? I will give it a try because this year my tomatoes have been a bust! We had a long June Gloom and I had started in pril..might of been too cold.
I'm off to shake and flick my tomato plants. Thanks! I was wondering what to do since mine are still indoors and flowering but the weather is too sad to put them outside.
I tried keeping bees inside my apartment to pollinate my indoor garden. It didn't work out.

Seems more like a method for a greenhouse, rather than outside where the wind shakes it enough.
SheepDog707 6 months ago
Aww, if I knew you can just flick/shake them, I would not have bought an electric toothbrush to buzz them!

Hehehe, I flick my tomato flowers. It seems to work pretty well too XD

Are the flowers supposed to die or fall off?
caholaway 8 months ago
@caholaway
The flowers are the ones that turn into fruits no?
iWearGlassesLOL 7 months ago
@iWearGlassesLOL yeah, the fruit pops right out of the flower
helmsdeep48 7 months ago
@caholaway they kind of fall off after the fruit begins growing out of them

In the UK it's easier to just buy a small hive of live bumblebees and place it in the greenhouse. They're called Beepol hives.
