recently I came up to your videos about basics of photography and I must say they are amazing and you make the hard stuff easy to understand unlike other videos I found on youtube. I was wondering if you could help me out about this flash I have its really old one vivitar zoom thyristor 2500 which I used with my old olympus slr camera...can I use this flash with my nikon d5000 ? will it harm my camera I read some reviews, some said its ok some said it will harm the mechanism of the nikon d5000
I made a ridiculous looking mount and rigged it so it can hold strips of "cut out" milk carton pieces in front of the "pop up" camera. I must say, results are pretty pleasing. It greatly reduces the harsh straight-on flash & shadows. I take a piece of cotton ball, stretch it out and tape it onto the milk carton piece to soften up the flash and further distribute light evenly throughout the room. Sometimes, I even add colored gift wrap tissue paper to give it warmth, cool, etc. effect. Cool, eh?
Dude, this video is awesome. I am not a pro nor want to be one... sheesh, I don't even have my own camera yet... but I'll be buying one before this year ends to give my new hobby a kick-start. This video convinced me to get the "super-awesome" accessory... the BOUNCE-FLASH! *grin!* (please post the web address that you were talking about for the list)
Been watching quite a few tutorials on photography here on youtube and I really enjoy the passion and the clarity that comes through with ur tutorials. Keep it up dude.
Btw, the sound on this video was a bit low, if I had to make any complaint.
hi, just got mine. just wondering how many light (AF-assist illumination) that lights up when you press the shutter button half way? because my sb 700 just lights one light. hope you understand my question. thx.
@leshizzi SB700 because SB900 has jammed quite a few times photographing the dance. SB900 over heats a lot. I can fire SB700 at full power one after another and zero issues. SB900 is more powerful but SB700 has plenty of kick. SB900 is too risky for events. We do weddings with two shooters so when SB900 freezes, at least SB700 is alive and kicking so we can manage that but if it's only SB900.. you're screwed!
@klenmanalo I don't recall saying cheap triggers damange your dslr. I've used cheap triggers myself in the beginning before getting Pocket Wizard and nothing bad happened to my camera. It just doesn't work that way.
@PhotographersOnUTube no what I meant was many of my friends discourage me of buying cheap triggers but after your review on them it seem like there's no harm in trying them...
@klenmanalo Well, the real thing can't be compare to the cheap stuff. I have 500 bucks to burn on triggers and perhaps your friends do too but not everyone is going to dish out that much on triggers. Those who don't can buy cheap stuff until they can afford the real deal like Pocket Wizard FlexTT5.
i do not own a SLR but my point and shoot has pretty much all features that a SLR has. Problem is, the only types of AF modes i can see are Q and C. I know C is for continues focus but what does Q stand for?
@rockstarfurst Honestly, I'm not sure. Sometimes they use different terms. AFA in Canon is AI Focus, AFS in Canon is One shot and AFC is Al Servo. Look up Q as I'm not familiar with it at all.
@PhotographersOnUTube i tried to google it but i cudnt find anything that was informative at all. in fact there was nowhere where AF Q was a term related to photography. I'll check the manual though...
@budmike81 Meaning..... change you change them? Yes, you can buy what ever bounce flash you want as long as it's compatible with your model. All the branded ones are compatible but generic, third party ones, you'll have to do some research on.
I hate pop upflash but I need it for some dark concert shoots. the problem is it usually flickers and then wont take the picture. What can i do to prevent this? It always makes me look like an idiot and the flash is too bright and distracting
@innaru also, THANKS for the talking about alternative products! I'm on a budget and this will really help me in a major way. Hope you put them up on your site. Just "liked" your facebook!
Thank you for your response, but I'm still not clear on the answer to my question. Do I use my light meter when using the speedlight? The reason I'm asking is bc when I have the speedlight on, it seems the light meter on the camera doesn't change at all. Please be patient w/me as I am very much a beginner! :)
@aclamors No, try not to zero the light meter if that's what you're talking about. Shoot in manual mode both, camera and flash. You're going to use flash to expose your subject and control the ambient light by controlling the shutter speed. Also, try facebook page. There are picture examples. I don't always check the youtube account anyway. Hope this helps.
Hi! Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos, very helpful. I have a question & I believe it has alredy been asked, but want to clarify. I am a beginner. I try my best to shoot in man. mode. I have a sb700 & would LOVE to learn to use it! So, when I use my speedlight I do not use the light meter on the camera at all? And I'm also trying to read/learn about metering w/grey cards when taking portraits. Can you meter w/grey card if using a speedlight to bounce light?
@aclamors Thank you! When you use a flash, your WB is going to get cooler temp automatically. Flash gives you cooler temperature. Metering with grey card is not always accurate. You could be off by 1/3 or 2/3 stops. You're going to need a incident meter but I would recommend you go over the basic stuff before you get into incident metering or even custom WB. That's something that can be fixed in post processing.
UMmm EBAY NOW. Bounce Flash in the next month or so. Quote of the video ...."thank you...thank you China" Im so excited about your videos and Im letting everyone know!
When are you going to finish with your website? your videos are amazing. Can I use DI622 with D7000 and do you know if I can use it as a remote control flash or does it have to be on the camera?
@Hmanan Thanks man! You can check out the website. I try to update whenever I can. There is already some stuff there but A LOT more is going to get added in future. I'm not familiar with DI622. What is it?
Thanks for the info! I watched your bid on using the flash already- another great one. I just began this hobby- I picked up a d3100, with the kit lens. I have been shooting photos of my son, and recently, of the lighthouse here on long island. I have been experimenting w/ settings... some photos are good, while others, I shot using "auto" (outdoors). I want to stay away from auto, so I will be asking you for lots of advice!
@Throwmethewhip I am here to help. But facebook is a better place because not only can I look at the picture but also write without any character limitation. Here on youtube you have limited space to write. Do join me and other photographers on my facebook page. Click on my channel and a link is posted there. Also, check out my free website where you'll find a very detailed answer to your question about the lens. You can also my video on prime vs zoom vs kit lens.
@Throwmethewhip lol. Jared is into more BS videos, more hits, more $. His ex best friend on the other hand is a class act, very knowledgeable with real experience. I am more like Greg. I care about teaching. Yes, the vivitar flash will work with any Nikon but make sure you get the Nikon one. There are two, one for Nikon and one for Canon. And make sure you watch my video on Bonce Flash/Speed light tutorial before you make the purchase.
@salzbergmd Tell your son I said HELLO! My website address is the same as my channel name. Just add dotcom to it. You can check out budget photography section where all the inexpensive BUT good quality products are listed. I just came back from a wedding shoot so I'll be hitting the bed. Hope you catch you on facebook soon.
@selinamarie00 Look for my video on outdoor portrait using diffuser. In that video I used the $18 diffuser and you'll find a link of that product under description. If you join me on facebook, I could give you the link because youtube does not allow you to post URLs. OR, you can go to my main channel and look for other channel. It's called PhotographyVlog. Click on that. There look for the video on diffuser where I did hands on review. If you still have trouble, ask me on facebook.
@PhotographersOnUTube I am using D5000 and just bought SB700. Now I realize my cam dont have commander so I cant use my speedlight off camera. Since SB700 can be a master, should I buy another speedlight (my budjet only up to SB400) as a slave OR if you have a better ideas. Thanks a lot.
@MrAzmanOmar Yes, D5000 doesn't have CLS system but you can't use CLS system during day light outdoor anyway. I use CLS system ONLY if I don't have the flash triggers on me. You can buy $25 made in China (cowboy studio) flash triggers for off camera flash work. They work in manual mode only. The flash has to be in manual, not the camera. They're listed on my site under Budget Photography. I'll do a review on the trigger in a month or two. I never had any issues with them. For $25 it's a win.
Ive been watching ur vid since the first one. Thanks to you, now i have learned something new about photography. however if possible, can you make a lesson about the lens? I still have a little knowledge about that. Keep up a good work. Thank you for ur time.
@iverxang I appreciate that. Yes, I will be making a video on different lenses. Prime lens vs zoom lens. Kit lens vs fixed aperture lens etc. Because of the wedding season and family outdoor shoots, things are kind of crazy. Meeting with brides/grooms to finalize things, plus I'm renovating my place myself which is also keeping me busy. But I'm giving you my word that I'll cover this topic for you. Join me on facebook for behind the scene videos which I'll start posting in the summer.
@PhotographersOnUTube I will defenitely join you on facebook. I have been fascinated with photography lately and thinking of getting SRL camera like Nikon D7000 as well. Thank you.
@Gabsterboy No, I mostly own Nikon cameras. If I ever decide to get into making videos, I'll pick up a Canon. Nikon performs better in low light and Canon has the video edge.
@jzantana Yes, you can reduce the power of pop up flash but you'll still see the shadows. If you really reduce the power, that would result in under exposure. Even a bounce flash will cast harsh shadows if fired directly on the subject. But a speed light has the ability to bounce the light off the ceiling/wall and get the flash off the camera for more creative work.
@myiphonerocks3gS It all depends on your budget. If you use them quite often you should go with something that's user friendly. They do tend to last a while so your investment will go a long way. It's hard for me to pick a Canon flash as I've never used Canon before. I've used Nikon SB600, 700 and 800. If you don't do major strobist work, any mid range would do the trick. I'd read Canon flash reviews and ask some Canon users on youtube. If you won't use flash that often, then try 3rd party flash
Any bounce flash is compatible with my canon 3ti? I saw one online and it's soooooooo much cheaper with swivel, but doesn't say anything about compatibility with other cameras.
hi, Like your videos. Can you make video on focusing, Like how the various different focus modes work, Single, Continuous and 3d. Also what focus do you use at weddings and what would you recommend for weddings to track subjects for candid shots? I think a video on things to consider for wedding photography would be good. keep up the good work.
@MrAmerKarim I'll definitely do a video on different focusing in the future along with wedding tutorial once I've covered the beginners level. I personally don't use 3D tracking as I don't shoot sports/action. In wedding if the subject is moving go with AF-C and make sure the shutter button is pressed half way for refocusing. Know your minimum shutter speed based on the focal length and also include your crop factor if applicable. If you're using AF-S the middle focal point is the fastest.
Great Video can't wait for the SB-700 lesson! I wanted to take a picture of a baby on a swing and show motion and have it flash at he end of a longer shutter spped any suggestions? d7000 with sb 700 and 18-200vr2 thanks
@vinnyvette Thanks Vinny! What you're talking about is called Rear or 2nd curtain sync. You set your flash (by doing it on camera) to rear curtain sync so the flash fires at the end. This eliminates blur and freezes the motion at the same time. On the left side of your D7000 you'll see a flash sign. Press & hold that and move the back dial of the camera. You'll get different options. On the small green screen when you see "rear" choose that option and you're set.
@vinnyvette I'll have to do a detail video to explain this as it's mostly trial and error. Mostly you use rear curtain when there is not a lot of light and you want to freeze the action. If your goal is to simply freeze the motion while the baby is on the swing, you could do that during day time by increasing your shutter speed. For motion going left to right or right to left or action coming at your requires 1/250 sec. For motion going up/down or down/up requires 1/500 if not 1/1000 to freeze.
@iMacMan77 SB700 is very user friendly. You could use the CLS system without getting into Flash's menu. A simple switch to "remote" will do it. The rest you do it in camera's menu to enable wireless flash without using any flash triggers.
Good video! what fx lens (third party) do you recommend for wide zoom, for now I got d90, sigma 70-200 2.8, and nikon 24-70 2.8 near future I what d700. TY!
@Jepraw Tokina 16-28 f/2.8 is a great lens. Read the reviews on B&H and search for pictures on flickr. I think you'll like it. It's half the price of Nikkor 14.-24. Keep in mind D90's crop factor but eventually when you upgrade to full frame this lens will give you a great wide angle range.
@Jepraw Currently I'm not using ultra wide angle. A while back I had purchased Sigma 17-70 but the aperture was variable. I may get the Tokina one eventually. But before you purchase Tokina, make sure you save for the Nikkor 24-70. That's a must have. There is no alternative that comes close to it.
Thanks for the info along with the examples.

So many choices... Which do you recommend?
myiphonerocks3gS 11 months ago
@myiphonerocks3gS It all depends on your budget. If you use them quite often you should go with something that's user friendly. They do tend to last a while so your investment will go a long way. It's hard for me to pick a Canon flash as I've never used Canon before. I've used Nikon SB600, 700 and 800. If you don't do major strobist work, any mid range would do the trick. I'd read Canon flash reviews and ask some Canon users on youtube. If you won't use flash that often, then try 3rd party flash

Oops.. sorry typo. Was suppose to say 3rd party vivitar brand. Will it work on my camera? Maybe I should wait until u review them.
myiphonerocks3gS 11 months ago

myiphonerocks3gS 11 months ago
@myiphonerocks3gS 4td?

MrAmerKarim 11 months ago
@MrAmerKarim I'll definitely do a video on different focusing in the future along with wedding tutorial once I've covered the beginners level. I personally don't use 3D tracking as I don't shoot sports/action. In wedding if the subject is moving go with AF-C and make sure the shutter button is pressed half way for refocusing. Know your minimum shutter speed based on the focal length and also include your crop factor if applicable. If you're using AF-S the middle focal point is the fastest.

Great Video can't wait for the SB-700 lesson! I wanted to take a picture of a baby on a swing and show motion and have it flash at he end of a longer shutter spped any suggestions? d7000 with sb 700 and 18-200vr2 thanks
vinnyvette 11 months ago
@vinnyvette Thanks Vinny! What you're talking about is called Rear or 2nd curtain sync. You set your flash (by doing it on camera) to rear curtain sync so the flash fires at the end. This eliminates blur and freezes the motion at the same time. On the left side of your D7000 you'll see a flash sign. Press & hold that and move the back dial of the camera. You'll get different options. On the small green screen when you see "rear" choose that option and you're set.
PhotographersOnUTube 11 months ago
@vinnyvette I'll have to do a detail video to explain this as it's mostly trial and error. Mostly you use rear curtain when there is not a lot of light and you want to freeze the action. If your goal is to simply freeze the motion while the baby is on the swing, you could do that during day time by increasing your shutter speed. For motion going left to right or right to left or action coming at your requires 1/250 sec. For motion going up/down or down/up requires 1/500 if not 1/1000 to freeze.

As a person that want to get more into photograph you videos really help me! Keep up the good work.

@Gorejess90 I appreciate that. If you have any question or confused about something, feel free to ask. :)

Thanks, good video. I have not long had a D7000 and am now in the market for an SB700. This really convinced me.
iMacMan77 11 months ago
@iMacMan77 SB700 is very user friendly. You could use the CLS system without getting into Flash's menu. A simple switch to "remote" will do it. The rest you do it in camera's menu to enable wireless flash without using any flash triggers.

Good video! what fx lens (third party) do you recommend for wide zoom, for now I got d90, sigma 70-200 2.8, and nikon 24-70 2.8 near future I what d700. TY!
Jepraw 11 months ago
@Jepraw What are you looking for Jep? Prime or Zoom? Fixed or variable aperture? How wide do you want to go? Below 24?
PhotographersOnUTube 11 months ago
@PhotographersOnUTube zoom and 2.8, something like 14-24 but nikon is too much!!! :)
Jepraw 11 months ago
@Jepraw Tokina 16-28 f/2.8 is a great lens. Read the reviews on B&H and search for pictures on flickr. I think you'll like it. It's half the price of Nikkor 14.-24. Keep in mind D90's crop factor but eventually when you upgrade to full frame this lens will give you a great wide angle range.
PhotographersOnUTube 11 months ago
@PhotographersOnUTube Thats what I'm thinking too :) how about you what lens do you use for that wide? ty for your time :)
Jepraw 11 months ago
@Jepraw Currently I'm not using ultra wide angle. A while back I had purchased Sigma 17-70 but the aperture was variable. I may get the Tokina one eventually. But before you purchase Tokina, make sure you save for the Nikkor 24-70. That's a must have. There is no alternative that comes close to it.
PhotographersOnUTube 11 months ago
@PhotographersOnUTube yup I got 24-70mm 2.8 with d90 and I think they good. ty!
