I bought the DG-20 as my first guitar in late April '88, but as soon as October of that same year, I sold it to buy an electric.
I don't regret the choice of swapping to a real guitar, but seen as later I've got interested in synths and samplers I started feeling sorry that I had to get rid of it as a MIDI controller. But you know, a 14yo kid's wallet is generally pretty empty.
Hi, I just picked one of these up recently on eBay, and I'm having some trouble with getting some of the notes to sound. I noticed that you don't seem to be smashing on the strings like I have to to get a sound, could I be doing something wrong? Great playing by the way, Thanks!
i own many Casio music related products including the entire DG series, and whats funny is this guitar didn't get popular and so damn expensive until FOTC featured it, don't get me wrong, I love the show, but if you listen to the song, there's barely any of the guitar in the song at all.
Mine (bought new in '86) still works. I use it occasionally during live performances to add a little colour to my bands otherwise acoustic sound. Some of the voices are 'iffy' (especially the 'mandolin') but the organ effects are very plausible and the manual drum pads are fun. As a MIDI controller the patch lengths are a little limited (ie notes are cut dead after a few seconds if driving other instruments) but overall, a great, inexpensive 'toy' for it's time Ive had my moneys worth!
So I guess the PG-380 must have been introducted in 1988, together with the VZ line of synthesizers. Casio really had great instruments betwen 1985-1988.
Great. I am playing my DG 10 right now, which is way unbalanced for barstool playing. It still works great. My DG1 is lighter and I like it best but the 6th string doesn't change sounds at all...plays open e all the time. Any ideas how or where to get it fixed? Thanks.
does this mean even if theres a guitar sound you put on you dont have to strum? aw i was hoping id be like a synth and a real electric guitar at the same time :(
yo press strings but the neck is rubber and presure sensitive so anything you press is transfered by midi data to the onboard computer, basicly you press strings
Yeah I find it's generally easier to use fingers. The strings need to be hit a bit harder that you would with a real guitar, and sometimes it's easier to kind of pick it a bit like playing slap bass.
It depends, I think you can choose if you want to Tap the frets and get the sound (like a piano) or if you want to make it sound when you pluck the strings (like a guitar)
I remember this "guitar", and is nice to see this demo, but to play with this guitar it's horrible!!!
If you guys want to enter to the real guitar-midi world try the hexaphonic midi pickups by Graphtech, I allready have the Roland midi pickup, but is better the Graphtech.
a DG20; the 10 and 20 each have one or two features the other doesn't. The two organs sound great, don't they? I like the "chorus", as well. The tracking is excellent and it's a good midi controller.
One thing I like to do is play the jazz organ with a blues beat (from the DG) through the internal speaker along with another guitarist on acoustic (or electric). Drums, "keys" and guitar: We have music! A "whole band" can jam while sittin' on the couch! I'm thinking about cutting the strings short on the DG1. I'm going to cut them to about four to five inches along the pick/strum area, ala The Synthaxe, but leaving the fretboard stringless.
This was my very first electronic instrument, sold it to buy a Korg M1. It was just like a Casio keyboard with internal rythms, drum fills, drum pads etc. The strings are just for reference, no tuning necesary. Ah the memories.
AWESOME! I've been looking for one of these for a while now. Can anyone tell me a good place to look? I can't find any on ebay, craigslist or anywhere... Any suggestions?
Awesome vid and sounds I just recently got one of these and I am impressed by your clean playing as this one is easy to get those unwanted notes especially high on the neck I love it for controlling my other synths and my softsynths and I bought a Yamaha emt-10 mostly for the chorus and string sounds and the GR-20 rocks on that module I will post some sounds and vids as soon as able keep up the good work bro
I got a 1 off ebay, and from what i've seen, they are all pretty much the same. The 10 has a more "metal" form factor as well as a few (3-5) more sounds, and the 20 has a few more sounds than the 10. Im perfectly happy with my 1, though ;D

latfun3 3 years ago
it doesnt, you dont.
it works like a keyboard. whether you actually fret the string on this guitar doesnt matter, just as long as you're pushing down on the fret.
antihax91 3 years ago
It depends, I think you can choose if you want to Tap the frets and get the sound (like a piano) or if you want to make it sound when you pluck the strings (like a guitar)
waynegacy666 3 years ago
all the strings do is measure the amplitude. they don't make any real sound. they're plastic.
antihax91 3 years ago
Yeah, but I mean that you can select to play the notes with only tapping, or having to tap and hit a string.
