  • Sufy!

  • Why would someone thumb down this video? I mean the guy plays great and it's a pretty rare synth guitar. Giving thumbs down for this is pretty lame!

  • Set that bad boy to mandolin

  • Do you need anything else to run one of these or can you plug it straight into an amp?

  • @flyhi94 it can plug straight into an amp. it also has a midi out

  • i kinda want one of these.. is that so wrong?

  • I bought the DG-20 as my first guitar in late April '88, but as soon as October of that same year, I sold it to buy an electric.

I don't regret the choice of swapping to a real guitar, but seen as later I've got interested in synths and samplers I started feeling sorry that I had to get rid of it as a MIDI controller. But you know, a 14yo kid's wallet is generally pretty empty.

Thanks for waking up old memories, though : )

  • im da boom king ahhhh

  • Hi, I just picked one of these up recently on eBay, and I'm having some trouble with getting some of the notes to sound. I noticed that you don't seem to be smashing on the strings like I have to to get a sound, could I be doing something wrong? Great playing by the way, Thanks!

  • that's how guitarrists start to make real music! :)

    tricked you! ha! :D

  • Enough small boom, let's BOOM DA BOOM AAAAAAAHHHH!!!!

  • You will order a fancy Boom

  • YOU LIEK BOOM. AND I LIEK BOOM.

  • Misa Digital Guitars are for idiots. Real men play Casio DGs.

  • loved that stevie wonder riff at 3.23 its very superstitious

  • it sounds like music from the Nintendo game Zelda!

  • this guitar work in reason?

  • Great song to demonstrate with.

  • I'm considering buying one.... this is helping on the convincing side....

  • This is what you need when you meet a girl so hot that she's making you sexist.

  • i own many Casio music related products including the entire DG series, and whats funny is this guitar didn't get popular and so damn expensive until FOTC featured it, don't get me wrong, I love the show, but if you listen to the song, there's barely any of the guitar in the song at all.

  • is it possible to tighten the strings or will not make not pick up well

  • I Wish My Casio DG-20 Played That Good!!!

  • Darth vader has no time for guitars....... he rules the universe son!

  • Mine (bought new in '86) still works. I use it occasionally during live performances to add a little colour to my bands otherwise acoustic sound. Some of the voices are 'iffy' (especially the 'mandolin') but the organ effects are very plausible and the manual drum pads are fun. As a MIDI controller the patch lengths are a little limited (ie notes are cut dead after a few seconds if driving other instruments) but overall, a great, inexpensive 'toy' for it's time Ive had my moneys worth!

  • Oh My God! She's so hot! She's so fuckin' hot she's like a curry! XD

  • great video dude! are you an elf?

  • Wow, great ...

Can you make a bending with the string of the midi guitar?

  • So I guess the PG-380 must have been introducted in 1988, together with the VZ line of synthesizers. Casio really had great instruments betwen 1985-1988.

  • Great. I am playing my DG 10 right now, which is way unbalanced for barstool playing. It still works great. My DG1 is lighter and I like it best but the 6th string doesn't change sounds at all...plays open e all the time. Any ideas how or where to get it fixed? Thanks.

  • a must have in good condition though.

  • I love the synth sound from the 80's. NOW I WANT ONE!!! MOAR!!! DO WANT!!

  • does this mean even if theres a guitar sound you put on you dont have to strum? aw i was hoping id be like a synth and a real electric guitar at the same time :(

  • Sounds like Hot And Cold at the beginning!

  • just bought a dg10 on eby for 140

  • hey, great video, thanks for posting! is it possible to set the strings action?

  • nice run through of all the sounds. I didn't think the guitar work was so sloppy :)

  • I want one of these...Can they be found easily?

  • some one PLS tell me where i could get one of these, and how much.....??

  • at least it has a pretty badass clav

  • i didnt know chicks with beards could play

  • they must make a better version

  • what kind of music would you play on this?

  • Nice vid mate, are you going to circuit bend it?

I reckon it'd sound great with a bit of glitch!

  • does this have buttons that you press down or strings, i cant tell in this video, cuz im probs gonna buy one off ebay

  • yo press strings but the neck is rubber and presure sensitive so anything you press is transfered by midi data to the onboard computer, basicly you press strings

  • need an amp?

  • Nope, it doesn't.

  • How much does one of those cost

  • does it need an amp and if you know do you know where one can be purchased

  • it has output and a built-in loudspeaker

  • I heard that on the DG-10, you could bend notes by fingering three frets on the same string. I wonder if this is true on the DG-20?

  • The guitar sounds sound buzzy and Casio-y, but otherwise extremely realistic in terms of strumming & attack.

  • Could be just the patch, you could probably get a very real sounding midi patch.

  • So how much are these things worth? I would love to get one.

  • there about 100 pound on ebay

  • I sold mine 18 years ago! I can't believe how long has been since then! I wish I had it again now that I'm into midi stuff.

  • ARG! YES! Just now I got one on Ebay, and I'm waiting 7-14 days for it. BEAST!

  • Who's Da' Boom King?

  • Someone's smoking Boom in da back of da room!

  • They are great when hooked up to MIDI synths. :)

  • Are you plugging the strings with your fingers because these things can't be played with a pick?

  • I used to have one of these. There is no reason why you can't play with a pick but there's no point.

All the sounds are electronic and it would make no difference.

  • Yeah I find it's generally easier to use fingers. The strings need to be hit a bit harder that you would with a real guitar, and sometimes it's easier to kind of pick it a bit like playing slap bass.

  • Nice GYNTH !!

  • gynth. nice one

  • I need one of this midi guitar.I love it!!Where can i find it one???

  • Can you still get these?.

  • some one made this video way too serious. its like in rememberance of the dg or something. like it died.

  • haha

    you're totally right

  • @dz2ny It did. R.I.P.

  • How many frets does this honey have? And does anybody wanna sell me one for £150?

  • and with of a press of a button, its a glockenspiel!

  • what if i need a little mandolin?

  • what about a little bit of drums????

  • Boom boom.

  • Oh damn, flight of the concords????

  • "I'm gonna set my CASIO DG-20 Electric Guitar to Mandolin, and throw in some drums."

  • You'd better believe it, pal! Who's the boom king?

  • or trumpet even!!!!!

  • I NEED ONE SO BAD!

  • I had this guitar as a kid in the 80's i just fount it again in the attic after all these years lol its in excellent condition

  • Comment removed

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!! and on this guitar it sounds great.

  • "Darth Vader's guitar." : )

Interesting demo. They never really developed those in the 80s, did they? They came and went.

  • Does the midi out capture velocity

  • I like your song choices especially Mr. Stevens. I've been considering buying one of these so I'm checking out some videos and yours is my favorite.

  • i love it!

  • Does it take regular electric strings? plus how do you tune it?

  • it doesnt, you dont.

it works like a keyboard. whether you actually fret the string on this guitar doesnt matter, just as long as you're pushing down on the fret.

  • It depends, I think you can choose if you want to Tap the frets and get the sound (like a piano) or if you want to make it sound when you pluck the strings (like a guitar)

  • all the strings do is measure the amplitude. they don't make any real sound. they're plastic.

  • Yeah, but I mean that you can select to play the notes with only tapping, or having to tap and hit a string.

  • what happens if you break a string?

  • I guess your only option is to order a new string from Casio.

  • you replace it with thick nylon (technical details described in the manual)

  • is that first song box of rain by the grateful dead?

  • Where did you get it?!

    :D:D:D:D

  • OH MY FUCKING GOD, I NEED THIS.

It has that amazing 8-bit/synth sound!

  • dude one question the DG20 can do the same sounds like the DG10?

  • woah thats ugly but would be good to mess around with the different sounds

  • GO CHICAGO GO! YEAH!

I'm so glad you played sufjan.

    how much was it?

  • what a classic

  • pawn shop

  • Haha the Flight of the Conchords have one, and in one gig they said "We got this from a porn shop in the future"

  • its def "pawn" shop

w/ a new zeland accent lol

  • Oh that definitely makes more sense hahahahaha

  • Yeah, it does, but I thought it was porn shop, too, lol!

  • I haven't seen that episode but im guessing he said pawn, not porn

  • awesome!

what about the mandolin setting? :D

  • Wow, I actually like that synth acoustic sound a lot.

  • They sold those at Macy's in the 80's.

  • Ahh I wish I had one of these. freakin sweet.

  • I have one with a Grateful dead sticker on it :D

  • lol. dude i don't think you understand midi at all. keep our mouth shut if you don't know gear. go be an ignorant ranting ass somewhere else.

  • it sucks that you cant bend on it.

  • does anyone wanna sell this guitar to me??...seriouslly

  • it'd be good if you ever wanted to compose music for an 8-bit video game.

  • who wouldn't want to compose music for an 8-bit video game?

I mean seriously - that's pretty much the pinnacle of all musical achievement.

  • I kinda agree...

    That's cool.

  • anyone know where i can find one of these? ebay dont got shit =(

  • I Have one, fully working with the hard-to-get original hard case. Love it to death.

  • I love this guitar I'am getting one rather soon and I can't wait!

  • This guitar has just been made famous by The Flight of the Conchords. Could imagine they will be worth quite a bit of coin in the future!

  • haha i just came from the concord video to this to see what it could realy do lol

  • Me too :D

  • me three!!

  • I remember this "guitar", and is nice to see this demo, but to play with this guitar it's horrible!!!

If you guys want to enter to the real guitar-midi world try the hexaphonic midi pickups by Graphtech, I allready have the Roland midi pickup, but is better the Graphtech.

  • bellissima!

  • I'm getting one as a direct result of watching this demo

  • Cool post! I own a DG1, DG10 and

a DG20; the 10 and 20 each have one or two features the other doesn't. The two organs sound great, don't they? I like the "chorus", as well. The tracking is excellent and it's a good midi controller.

  • One thing I like to do is play the jazz organ with a blues beat (from the DG) through the internal speaker along with another guitarist on acoustic (or electric). Drums, "keys" and guitar: We have music! A "whole band" can jam while sittin' on the couch! I'm thinking about cutting the strings short on the DG1. I'm going to cut them to about four to five inches along the pick/strum area, ala The Synthaxe, but leaving the fretboard stringless.

  • I have one of these. They are awesome, until the batteries die and I realize I don't have a power adapter.

  • Cool sounds, plus you have a really good sense of time. Thanks for excellent demo!

  • good effort man.

howz the midi response time when controlling external midi sound sources?

    thanks

  • No noticeable lag at all, it really is an incredible piece of kit.

  • wow...that is actually kinda cool :O

  • This was my very first electronic instrument, sold it to buy a Korg M1. It was just like a Casio keyboard with internal rythms, drum fills, drum pads etc. The strings are just for reference, no tuning necesary. Ah the memories.

  • I have a Unisynth xg midi guitar for sale that is somewhat similar to this. Check out my video if anyone is interested.

  • lol

  • Freaking righteous.

  • I wanted one of these for a long time...

the "stock" internal sounds are horrid as long as U can use other VSTi's with this as apposed to the stock sounds thats great

  • Great - but I would have like to have seen more techniques for playing this guitar....

  • groovy

  • can you amp it up

  • Interesting, but how well does it track to external MIDI instruments? More importantly, can it do alternate tunings?

  • I NEED IT!

  • FUCK YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • how good's the sustian on that thing

flight of the conchords uses it sometimes

  • so future

  • hey i have a question: will the strings ever break and if so where to buy them and how to change them?

  • i was wondering this too!

  • any ordinary acoustic nylon guitar string with the same diameter will do.

  • AWESOME! I've been looking for one of these for a while now. Can anyone tell me a good place to look? I can't find any on ebay, craigslist or anywhere... Any suggestions?

  • there are 2 on ebay if you look like, RIGHT NOW

  • Awesome vid and sounds I just recently got one of these and I am impressed by your clean playing as this one is easy to get those unwanted notes especially high on the neck I love it for controlling my other synths and my softsynths and I bought a Yamaha emt-10 mostly for the chorus and string sounds and the GR-20 rocks on that module I will post some sounds and vids as soon as able keep up the good work bro

  • That looks like a fun machine to just jam on. I might have to get one.

  • lol pure casio cheese! my uncle used to bring home brochures of this crap when i was 8 years old...lol

  • ...i want your junk.

simply cos this guitar is sexy.

and i want one ever so badly.

    :(

    <3 -t

  • often used by Bret of Flight of the Conchords =D

  • Hellz yeah.

  • I've had one hanging around in my basement for a long time. You inspired me to finally try playing it :D

  • Can you tell me which one you think is better the 1, 10, or 20?

  • I got a 1 off ebay, and from what i've seen, they are all pretty much the same. The 10 has a more "metal" form factor as well as a few (3-5) more sounds, and the 20 has a few more sounds than the 10. Im perfectly happy with my 1, though ;D

  • The 20 is the only one with MIDI out, which is very useful for controlling live sound generators, so keep that in mind when looking to buy.

  • @ansomatica

can i use it like a midi keyboard? for ableton, reason, logic, vst etc etc...

  • Waw its even better than i thought!

I really want one, and hopefully, i will soon have one!

Perfect live machine with the Midi out too XD

  • I love sufjan stevens. good call.

  • me too. sufjan stevens is awesome.

  • Not to shabby! Got to love the guitar re-made famous by the Flight of the Conchords!!! (wahoo inserted here!) When are you going to post some new sounds on this baby??

  • Very good idea to show several sounds of this beautiful instrument I own, too. Stay safe with this unique guitar!

  • Awesome!

  • a tope!!!

  • Well done mate, sounds cool!
