This is THE PERFECT example of why 1990-1995 mariah carey will ALWAYS be a better singer than Whitney houston during the prime of her voice. I agree that 1996-2004 mariah struggled to keep up with whitney,but now again,she sounds better than the present whitney. Not hating. :)

In my opin., between 91-97 was some of her greatest years. Her voice perfectly in the middle, and she had a class, dignity, and power, and it shone in her music.

I like Mariah's version of this song better than the one in this video, but there's 2 points that I think its important to say:
First and more important, Mariah sung this song when her voice was at her best, and Whitney's voice was never the same after 1996, and this video is from October 1997. I'm sure that if this was sung like 1994, or in the 80's it would sound much better.
Second thing is that Mariah Sung with Luther, who is better singer than Gary.
All of these points are true. I am obsessed with Mariah, however, her version with Luther was a gazillion times better than this one, it was better than the original to me also.

I think this song is NO EXEMPLE to compare Whitney to Mariah, because Mariah was still at her prime, and Whitney wasn't already!
Plus, of course Luther is much better than Gary... but Whitney at her prime is no less than Mariah... so this is again unfair... because you are comparing a version with 2 great singers, with another one that has got only One great singer and already not at her prime!
And anyways I think this version is still very beautifull!

This is THE PERFECT example of why 1990-1995 mariah carey will ALWAYS be a better singer than Whitney houston during the prime of her voice. I agree that 1996-2004 mariah struggled to keep up with whitney,but now again,she sounds better than the present whitney. Not hating. :)

This is 1997 - Whitney was never the same since 1996. By the time of this video her voice was getting tired because of smoke and overusing.
Whitney's prime ends in 1996, after years of drugs (since the Bodyguard).
But afterall I think this is a Beautiful performance!
I also think that Gary's voice is the main reason for it being not as good as MC and Luther version, because Whitney even if not at her best, she is Great here!

all singers go through stages with their voices. They start off powerful and learn as they go...where to resonate, vocal runs, improvisions, then they get older and their voice takes on a maturity, sorta like wine aged perfectly. then unfortunatlely, nothing lasts for ever. In my opin., between 91-97 was some of her greatest years. Her voice perfectly in the middle, and she had a class, dignity, and power, and it shone in her music.

yup it is. because Whitney was more believable to me on both. It feels like she is sing about love on this and the birth of Jesus on Oh Holy Night. I like Mariah's version of this song better than the one in this video, but there's 2 points that I think its important to say:
First and more important, Mariah sung this song when her voice was at her best, and Whitney's voice was never the same after 1996, and this video is from October 1997. I'm sure that if this was sung like 1994, or in the 80's it would sound much better.
Second thing is that Mariah Sung with Luther, who is better singer than Gary.
But anyways, this version is Great!

Mariah used to be AMAZING live.. she's still fine live.. has good and bad days.. but the one thing that won't change is that NO ONE has a voice that sounds anything close to hers. I love Whitney, but I've heard several singers with voices quite similar to hers.

I admit that Whitney is not what she used to be either, but back in the day Whitney saaaangg her $ss off and nobody can deny that.
