yeah.... you dont realise how hard it can be to play complex riffs and sing at the same time till you try it. if they are two different melodies that is. of course chords are a heck of a lot easier, and a vocal melody that follows the riff is also pretty easy. i think the trick is to sort of develop at least one of those things to a completely automatic level so you can concentrate on the other. trying to divide your attention between the two just gets you muddled.

Think about the time in which they came out as well... Roadrunner was trying to get into the Nu Metal thing so they held them all back... and made them sound that way... if they didn't go along with it...they would've been dropped from their label...
