For the record: this run is not exactly 'tools assisted'. A 'tools assisted' run is one where multiple play segments are stitched together *within a single level* and/or a modified executable is used that allows you to play in slow motion.
In the Done Quick runs, each level is played in a single sitting, and the level runs stitched together into episodes. It's not a single person playing through in a single sitting, but each level is one sitting by one player.
This player is spectacular! By the time you've already completed episode one, I'm still lumbering around on the first level looking for secrets.
I've only passed Ultimate Doom on Hurt Me Plenty (stupid Thy Flesh Consumed) taking roughly 80 years, yet you manage to pass it in 16 minutes on Ultra-Violence. The only problem I have is the fact that you're using Gravis so no MIDIs D:
Awesome speedrun! Brings back fond memories of having my mind completely beyond blown when I played this for the first time, and the fun I had while I was addicted to it for a few years in the mid '90s.
@GuitarHeroRuler4 .It was that the guy that bought this was like in their 20s nerds and this was their first game so the game was made easy and like roleplaying-you whee supposed to kill them 1 by one and strafing..whats that- like unheard of and the controls was very unforgiving and keyboards some clumsy ..crap and try play with a serial mouse- it lags and gives you 35 fps.. really
I guess it depends on what is accomplished with the tools that were used in making the speedrun. I believe you can probably go through these levels pretty quickly if your movement time is just right. When I practice speedruns, i first practice the run with -NOMONSTERS, and do not use any weapons which I may have aquired, to practice running and moving around corners, as well as scaling walls and to learn the terrain. With the monster-inclusive speedrun, I focus on minimal firing and surviving.
@SmiteMeister1666 E1M4 (Command Control) was done in 9 seconds. I know of two ways to speedrun through the level... the first is as he did.. bypassing all keys, and running straight through to the exit. I've completed this level (without any tools) in 22 seconds (and less) by this method. The other is a bit cooler, but it takes a little longer... and it involves scaling the wall by the toxic pool, grabbing the yellow key, hitting the switch, going through the yellow door & exit.
@SmiteMeister1666 I'd like to post some of my own speedruns, but my .lmp to video recording isn't very reliable. If someone would like to help out, that would be nice :)
Dude, this player is amazing! More amazing, is that the Doom community (and the game as a whole) is still growing! I'm still learning things I didn't know years ago when I started playing in '96.
The sense of timing and movement this player has is amazing. And yes, it seems to be on UV. Nightmare mode does have two flags different from UV and all of the lesser skills levels, as Sp00kyFox mentioned: "Fast (Monsters)", and "Respawn". Ammo quantities per whole unit are more, also in skills 1 & 5.
@Sp00kyFox The levels were recorded separately and put together, but we didn't use any slow motion, stitching, or other tool assistance within the level runs themselves . Each player would receive a configuration file that contained the player's health and other stats, plus the state of Doom's random number generator, at the end of the previous level. We'd then use that to record a single level via normal play.
@Sp00kyFox we got the single-person, single-sitting episode times down pretty close to the DDQr runs a few years later. I think we might even have beaten a couple of the episode times, in the end. My memory goes fuzzy. Unfortunately the compet-n database seems to be dead now, so I can't check. :/ I think the last EP1 single-play record I heard of was 5:05, and EP1 is the hardest to run.
in doom vanilla (not in source ports and mods) objekts like enemies, the player and especially switches have infinite height. so that's why you can activate the switch at 7:48.
i watched some of your videos it is really good how you finish lvls by dying and sliding into the finishing portals. and its really dam amazing how you finish many lvls almost about to die and very dangerious situations. u obviously must have lots of time on ur ass 0_0
You wont stay on the map forever if you magically kill everything. Once you die, the message screen comes up.
Theres a sector property on the sector that youre in that makes it so you take 10 damage a second, or somnsuch. So you'll die. Dunno bout godmode though. You should still die due to a script.
This is on Nightmare. Not Ultra Violence. You can tell by the speed of the monsters coming at him. And you can't use those cheat codes anyway since those only go up to UV, and don't work in Nightmare. On the SNES, don't bother trying this. The game isn't whole on that anyway. Same as how DooM 3 on Xbox has stuff missing since a computer is way more powerful than the Processor and Video card in an Xbox. They always cut back for consoles.
it's ultra violence not nightmare. on nightmare the monsters respawn. maybe they played with the fast-switch, but I doubt it. semms to be a normal uv-run.
@Sp00kyFox is a normal UV run, with the -fastmonsters switch. You can tell it for the ammo- how much ammo do you take when you get it. On nightmare, as a compensatory way for the big difficulty, you pick the double of ammo than in other difficulties.
Actually you are alive. You can exit this level only in "low HP" condition, so character can not die during this "event". And if you somehow manage to kill all of those foes, you simply will stay on this map for ever.
This 10 minute video resumes my 1 or 2 nights play back in the good old doom days.

Does anyone know where the alternate background music comes from? I tried using Timidity++, but it sounded nothing like this...
colBoh 6 months ago
@colBoh
like noted in the description, the sound is from an emulated gus (gravis ultrasound).
pretty much the only way to make the game sound like this is with dosbox or an original gus.

This is Doom, not Ultimate Doom (Plutonia and TNT packs). I'm confused. Is the title incorrect?
Madsy9 1 year ago
@Madsy9
nope, the title is correct. you mistake ultimate doom for final doom (which is plutonia & tnt).
ultimate doom is doom 1 with a fourth extra episode.
