HAHAHAHAH! For someone who is off the grid you sure replied quickly! I didn't expect that. Maybe you aren't out in the boonies right now. By the way I think that is really cool. An old fashioned or traditional sawmill has a huge vertical blade with a deck with rollers, kinda like a giant tablesaw. You can rip boards and trim them. I see now that the new portable sawmills are all like your bandsaw. Cool! Won't let me post a link. Google images>old fashioned sawmill. It's on Wikipedia.
J, while your homemade horizontal band saw is REALLY cool, it probably would have been easier for you to just make it more like a traditional sawmill. For an extra 50 bucks you probably could have gotten a 60" blade, used, and just sharpened it. Amazing though, I have to say. You really crack me up.
very very sourceful! and you live on a MT. I am very envious you live on a MT! I swear when I win the Lotto I am gunna go off the grid myself, and build my own house on a mountain!
@moderndayrambo You don't need to win the lottary to go off grid. Thats kinda the point. No bills. :-) ...well, one of the points. There are lots of other ones.
#2: never buy a welding machine.. haha watch some youtube videos on how to weld using car batteries, it's perfectly safe/functional, especially for a genius engineer willing to try something rediculous!
so i wrote a really long comment that went over youtube's character limit for one comment.... so here's the second half:
just yesterday, i took stripped down an old treadmill (people throw treadmills away like they were disposable paper plates) and salvaged a damn 2.9 HP permanent magnet DC motor, even better lookin than the expensive one that you purchased ;) so thats criticism remark #1
second.. im obsessed with metal workin now, like im buildin my own foundry for casting any metal but steel/iron, and to forge steel/iron, and what i plan on doing is using three car batteries (aka marine batteries) in series, with a 7018-grade electrode clamped in one of the clamps, to make a 36 volt arc, perfect for welding.
so with my metal-wisdom, im guna give you some constructive criticism:
heya jamie have you thought about making and using your own alcohol to fuel the generator?it can do a 50/50 straight mix with no adjustments or if you correct the spark and timing you can run 100% on alcohol and never need to buy fuel again.also great excuse for parties when the batches are brewed lol
heya aren't the boards likely to warp as they dry? Me and my dad have done some wood drying, and we have to fasten them down with tensioned steel cables to keep them from warping =/
thats awesome...i cant believe u built that lumber mill...its hard enough to build one that comes in a kit! horz and vertical alignment...it has to be perfect...how the hell did u do that? unbelievable...if u can build that, a robot shouldnt be a problem...damn u man! ur officially cooler than me...lol
Meh, give it a try and if you get a TV spot then bonus, but if not... who needs all that flakey hassle anyways :) ... then roam your badass robot over there and do some stomping! Like boom!
well... i was on the news a couple times a few weeks ago. Good enough for me. Actually, they want to do a couple more stories..... of when I'm working on the robot, and when its done.
Ya, its pretty awesome. I've been biting off more than I can chew lately, though! ha ha. Well, maybe not MORE than I can chew.... but a lot is going on!
JME - you rock bro, keep up the good fight man we love watching how you over come obstacles, albeit in what looks like an incredibly dangerous way. But seriously you inspire. One question, the - giant robot - please tell me your not going to sit inside it? remember how easily you could break the parts? I'm sure you know what your doing. (At least the coroner can watch the video ya:P)
Weren't you worried about that extension cord to the saw sparking and lighting up those huge piles of saw dust? It could just be me but I lost my whole workshop to that same problem.
Also, gotta say, only watched two of these video's so far but this has got to be one of my favorite things I've seen on Youtube. It seems like one day you woke up and decided it would be a good day to build a giant robot, which I do every day, but haven't been able to accomplish, or even start, yet.
Nice homemade sawmill. Why not buy your lumber? It would be quicker. I like your walking spider. Are you gonna build it out of wood? If I was gonna make a spider like you are thinking of I would use welded tubing I think.
Aw, you may have missed "episode" 1, or just not been paying attention. :-P. I'm building my robot out of aluminium. As for the wood. I'm not rich, and there's no road to my house. So... anything that gets up there, I have to carry a mile uphill.
Oh... AND its just WAY cooler this way because now I have a lumber mill! Hmm.. I'm having difficulty here. Maybe its just difficult to explain that I'd rather do anything myself that I can. I know... its weird in this lazy culture.
What ever happened to this lumber mill? I'm only at video 16, but I haven't seen it since. :(
