  • What ever happened to this lumber mill? I'm only at video 16, but I haven't seen it since. :(

  • good job

  • Minecraft sent me here.

  • I love how smart this guy is. Fucking incredible.

  • where in MT do you live? native of whitehall/butte here

  • Ok, go to Wikipedia, search Traditional sawmill and you will get a link to a sawmill in Jerome, Arizona.

  • HAHAHAHAH! For someone who is off the grid you sure replied quickly! I didn't expect that. Maybe you aren't out in the boonies right now. By the way I think that is really cool. An old fashioned or traditional sawmill has a huge vertical blade with a deck with rollers, kinda like a giant tablesaw. You can rip boards and trim them. I see now that the new portable sawmills are all like your bandsaw. Cool! Won't let me post a link. Google images>old fashioned sawmill. It's on Wikipedia.

  • J, while your homemade horizontal band saw is REALLY cool, it probably would have been easier for you to just make it more like a traditional sawmill. For an extra 50 bucks you probably could have gotten a 60" blade, used, and just sharpened it. Amazing though, I have to say. You really crack me up.

  • @ThePrairieFairymb Whats a traditional sawmill? ...and I got blades for 10$ each after I made sure everything worked right.

  • you sir are a junkyard jeanious

  • lol he is playing real life minecraft

  • holy crow man that log was ingenous!

  • what model is the welder

  • @Sten558 It looks like a lincoln powermig

  • you are my new hero hahaha

  • Yeah dude

  • Dude, what's your source of income? Or do you even have one?

  • Solar power

  • How the hell are you getting your money

  • do you take commitions?

  • you should make a tree house i bet it would have a bridge to another tree house and another bridge to another 1 that would be call

  • his got about 55 parts of video that proves this guy is more then dedicated keep up the good work and make new stuff

  • dude u live in my dream u seem like a billionare plus its been my life-long dream to live like you do

  • shit

  • Thou shalt be remembered in legend.

  • You are an entrepreneur like no other!

  • real life minecraft!

  • I bet that site smells incredible with all that fresh cut lumber and sawdust.

  • Good to see you enabled the remote operation of your saw!

  • Hey man, your awesome, brilliant and a great thinker. Bless your logic it's a gift.

  • That bandsaw is scary as hell. Be careful.

  • dude, can we donate to buy you a better camera?

  • I hope you're making good money on the side by selling that sawdust to Disneyland.

  • jesus fucking christ. amazing!!

  • Hey UNC! Very impressive work.

  • Seriously put something around that blade. I'm squirming in my seat thinking about when it snaps and whips off your head.

  • Do you have animal friends?

  • I bet you would survive 2012, good sire.

  • He played too much minecraft

  • The molten metal comes out in a nut shell? Damn, they some tuff nuts.

  • very very sourceful! and you live on a MT. I am very envious you live on a MT! I swear when I win the Lotto I am gunna go off the grid myself, and build my own house on a mountain!

  • @moderndayrambo You don't need to win the lottary to go off grid. Thats kinda the point. No bills. :-)

  • @moderndayrambo You don't need to win the lottary to go off grid. Thats kinda the point. No bills. :-) ...well, one of the points. There are lots of other ones.

  • @JMEMantzel Well you definitely need to save up some money to get yourself started. What about paying for the land to build your house?

  • @moderndayrambo Are you going to make YouTube videos of yourself when you go off the grid?

  • @jonathancbr815 lol Im pretty much already off the grid, but still in a city. When I get a camera, ill make some crazy vids though.

  • hows the fish box barn? Did you know who get the dome done?

  • What happens when the blade breaks? There's no way I'd stand anywhere near there--especially the sides--when it was running.

Put some fenders or something on there, dude. You're going to poke out a jugular!

  • eee karla je

  • haha even the second half had to be split again!

    here it is

#2: never buy a welding machine.. haha watch some youtube videos on how to weld using car batteries, it's perfectly safe/functional, especially for a genius engineer willing to try something rediculous!

  • so i wrote a really long comment that went over youtube's character limit for one comment.... so here's the second half:

just yesterday, i took stripped down an old treadmill (people throw treadmills away like they were disposable paper plates) and salvaged a damn 2.9 HP permanent magnet DC motor, even better lookin than the expensive one that you purchased ;) so thats criticism remark #1

  • DUDE first off, YOURE THE MAN

second.. im obsessed with metal workin now, like im buildin my own foundry for casting any metal but steel/iron, and to forge steel/iron, and what i plan on doing is using three car batteries (aka marine batteries) in series, with a 7018-grade electrode clamped in one of the clamps, to make a 36 volt arc, perfect for welding.

so with my metal-wisdom, im guna give you some constructive criticism:

you put way too much money into this project :P

  • nice saw about how long does it take to cut 10 ft board icut some with chain saw but not easy to cut straight

  • love the detication!!!!!! awsome video and cool place i wish i had my own workshop. =]

  • this may have been asked before but.. what is your plan of attack if you get stuck in a forrest fire? dig in?

  • @zeffii nah man hes gonna use that bandsaw of his and cut his way to safety. lol

  • wow dude thats awsome!

  • its amazing what you can do with this stuff. Do you have an engineering degree or something?

  • Awesome American ingenuity.

Also, awesome American complete disregard of safety! lol

If that blade brakes, your pretty much dead at 1:15

  • Nope, a broken bandsaw blade pretty uninspiring. Usually they just stop.

  • Hahahaha youre a genius dude! :)

  • Beautiful work

  • Be sure to keep watchign.!!! ^.^ 'cuz his newer vids are WAY better. And U'll be AMAZED at where he is now.

  • I wouldnt wanna be near that thing when the chain snapps^^

  • i'm getting my lumber mill ready to assemble, i still dont know how i'll adjust the wheels or in other words... keep the blade from falling off

  • heya jamie have you thought about making and using your own alcohol to fuel the generator?it can do a 50/50 straight mix with no adjustments or if you correct the spark and timing you can run 100% on alcohol and never need to buy fuel again.also great excuse for parties when the batches are brewed lol

  • heya aren't the boards likely to warp as they dry? Me and my dad have done some wood drying, and we have to fasten them down with tensioned steel cables to keep them from warping =/

  • Actually, it hasn't been much of a problem. They warp a little, but as long as I screw 'em down real good, they're fine.

  • ur doing all the stuff i'v all ways wonted too do nice.

  • why aren't you doing it???!

  • well im trying to find a place and im geting the money to start.

  • but i will be starting in 6 weeks

  • Sweet! Ya, it took me a while saving money before I bought my land.

  • lets just hope i get this land. XD

  • did ya get it did ya get it!!!???

  • no i dident end up geting the land i got out bidded so im trying again.

  • thats awesome...i cant believe u built that lumber mill...its hard enough to build one that comes in a kit! horz and vertical alignment...it has to be perfect...how the hell did u do that? unbelievable...if u can build that, a robot shouldnt be a problem...damn u man! ur officially cooler than me...lol

  • ha ha. thanks! Actually, the lumber mill was a piece of cake compared to the robot. It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be

  • have you been posting any current videos havent seen any in awhile since your news thing

  • There's Robot #21.....

  • You should totally pitch this whole documentary thing to the discovery channel :) its very entertaining.

  • Ya... I've dealt with TV people a little bit. They're very flakey. I can try sending them a message, but I think they'll ignore it. :-P

  • Meh, give it a try and if you get a TV spot then bonus, but if not... who needs all that flakey hassle anyways :) ... then roam your badass robot over there and do some stomping! Like boom!

  • well... i was on the news a couple times a few weeks ago. Good enough for me. Actually, they want to do a couple more stories..... of when I'm working on the robot, and when its done.

  • dudue your like friggin the guy from castaway ...i wis i could help you some way !

  • You can! Get me a bulldozer! :-P

  • wish i could ^^

  • very nice, I guess you're having a lot of fun, working in a forest with stuff like that.

  • Ya, its pretty awesome. I've been biting off more than I can chew lately, though! ha ha. Well, maybe not MORE than I can chew.... but a lot is going on!

  • You need to add something to sweep the chips off of the guide rails, it might run faster.

  • man, i love this thing. I can't wait 'till spring shows up again!

  • JME - you rock bro, keep up the good fight man we love watching how you over come obstacles, albeit in what looks like an incredibly dangerous way. But seriously you inspire. One question, the - giant robot - please tell me your not going to sit inside it? remember how easily you could break the parts? I'm sure you know what your doing. (At least the coroner can watch the video ya:P)

  • Love the set-up, looks safer then in your first vid for the series. Out of curiosity though, why so tall?

  • WHy so tall..... the tower? I want to be above the trees. :-) ...and have a windmill way up there too.

  • nice set up, I love the gravity feed. Curious why electric(guessing it run off a genny?) instead of a small gas engine?

  • Where do you get the wood for making the planks.

  • look in the background. :-) See them thar trees?

  • holy shit dude your fucking amazing u can do like anything

  • I still haven't managed to jump over tall building, though. only.. really really short ones.

  • Weren't you worried about that extension cord to the saw sparking and lighting up those huge piles of saw dust? It could just be me but I lost my whole workshop to that same problem.

Also, gotta say, only watched two of these video's so far but this has got to be one of my favorite things I've seen on Youtube. It seems like one day you woke up and decided it would be a good day to build a giant robot, which I do every day, but haven't been able to accomplish, or even start, yet.

  • I guess with my worrying about the giant steel blade spinning around waiting to lop my head off..... I didn't think much about the sparks. ha ha

  • if you modified this saw, do you think it could be mounted to a car for traffic jams?

  • Well... I can think of some things I'd like to make for traffic jams. heh heh. Way huger than my saw, though!

  • I want a giant robot

  • I just found your project, I think you are really cool. That's a clever set up for a saw.

  • Thanks! I like it too. :-)

  • nice work brother

  • For a second I was wondering which brother has a youtube account. :-P

  • You are AMBITIOUS! I hope this all works out well!

  • Work out well or die trying. :-) ....and I haven't died yet!

  • how did you build the house at the top of the hill in the first place?

  • check my website... in the adventures section. Lots of picturesand stuff starting right when I got the mountain.

  • "Got the mountain"?

    You bought a mountain?

    I think I'm missing something.

  • Ya... i bought a mountain. Thats where the dome is. ...and the tower. :-)

  • Sweet merciful crap, how much did that cost you?

  • You are disgustingly talented and I hate you. Well... at least the first half is true.

(It's me, by the way. Ya know, ME.)

  • Nice homemade sawmill. Why not buy your lumber? It would be quicker. I like your walking spider. Are you gonna build it out of wood? If I was gonna make a spider like you are thinking of I would use welded tubing I think.

  • Aw, you may have missed "episode" 1, or just not been paying attention. :-P. I'm building my robot out of aluminium. As for the wood. I'm not rich, and there's no road to my house. So... anything that gets up there, I have to carry a mile uphill.

  • Oh... AND its just WAY cooler this way because now I have a lumber mill! Hmm.. I'm having difficulty here. Maybe its just difficult to explain that I'd rather do anything myself that I can. I know... its weird in this lazy culture.

  • Thats awesome, again.

  • Lost may way, have I??? Perhaps I simply have more focus than someone who requires a project to have one step. ;-)

  • I think you should call this the giant tower project . . . you have lost your way!
