What’s disgusting here is that it’s not a case of it can’t be safer – it can. The reason why it’s not is because there are ridiculous loopholes in crash regulations with this classification of transport. It’s the ‘we don’t have to – so we wont bother’ mentality. I would not object to owning one in a grid locked city - but without even the most basic of safety features such as anti burst door locks (that have been on cars for decades)?...forget it.

In the US it would be limited to 40kph in the UK the later models can in theory do 50mph though their range would be pretty short if they drove at that speed for very long.

No matter how fast the vehicle itself can go it doesn't stop another vehicle hitting it at 40mph.

It's the kinetic energy of the cars that create more damage in this situation. Look at the fifth gear video when the crashed the smart car at 70mph in a concreat block, inside the cabin was still perdect, all the doors opend fine and overall the car oretty much shocked everyone at the fact it could sustain that kind of impact. The human body however cant sustain going from 70 to 0 dead, the smart car is about a million times more safe in a crash then that peice of shit, as clarkson says, u would be better off with a table
