@richardhawke It's pretty weird that I didn't hear all of these complaints about loud grunting when Seles, Arancha-Sanchez, & others were playing. There has always been loud grunters in the women's game & there were never any complaints until now. I wonder why is that?

No it's not pretty weird because you're wrong. There were plenty of complaints about Seles and she was asked to stop during Wimbledon 1992 because her opponents were sick of her.

There have been complaints about grunting since it's inception, it's just getting more pronounced now because it's the norm rather than the exception.

@CobaltKris There wasn't as many complaints then as it is now. Only a very small percentage of people actually complained about Seles's grunting then opposed to now. If it really is that big of a deal then all tourney officials have to do is make new laws abolishing grunting during match play.

@CobaltKris Not all of them are banshees though. Serena, I've gathered, as well as Venus it depends on effort. They really ARE hitting harder when they start to grunt. Kvitova is so quiet and when she does grunt, it's adorable, lol. Ivanovic isn't a big grunter...the loud grunters are more the exception (Sharapova, Azarenka, MLDB) than the rule.

@DEBASUHR there were some coaching problems, which led to confidence issues that hampered her improvement as well. At least that's what the Portuguese press has alleged. I hope she'll do better next season without any restrictions due to her age :)

Yeah, but Serena can also play really great tennis. She's goddess of concentration for major tournaments. She's so strong mentally. She moves so well, she can play extraordinary volleys, she can reduce the rallies by moving to the net. Her grunts are like side effects of playing. LDB, Azarenka or other noisy players use grunts like a basic "shot", it's no tennis, no conception for play only harder, harder and louder nothing more, no volley skills only sic-mad barkling.

Azarenka has a mean drop shot, she won a mixed doubles title at a GS, she just likes to hit hard and that's just her game style. OK, not everybody is 1 of the best tennis players of all time (Serena) but that doesn't mean they don't have a plan B (Michelle doesn't BTW, but you can't generalize) .

If you pay attention to the score, you can see that Serena was giving away free games during Michelle's service, and Michelle was probably ballbashing all these errors during Serena's service. Serena should not be losing 4 games to this ballbashing mug.
