Great stuff in this video. I can overlook the poor lighting and audio because you have presented the information so well. IMHO, it would have been better if you could lighten it a bit, perhaps a joke or real life examples, but this is the best video on the topic I have seen yet.
I am a Sr. BA and I agree with everything said in this video however there are someone important missing points.
1) Many stakeholders "say" they want proper requirements however, really they don't. The reason is requirements gathering and ROI analysis shows that half the time there is no business case, I repeat, no, as in ZERO, business case for initiating that project. This of course calls their decisions into question which, unless you want to be canned, you simply cannot do.
@Dreamstalker7 Typo in that first sentence. Should read some not someone. Second point:
2. Many companies are simply too immature too appreciate or recognize the value of requirements. Word to the wise. If you are working for such a company, get out. Now! Because fighting against that kind of stupid corporate culture will hurt you and will hurt your career. Don't throw BRS/SRS pearls before stakeholder swine. Get out and go somewhere where your skills will be appreciated. Trust me on this one.
@Dreamstalker7 I could not agree more. Many projects are started without properly aligning the project to the strategy of the business, they don't prioritize them and the communication between the project manager and BA is almost always lacking. I have other videos that explain those problems. I also have a 1.5 hour DVD on how to save projects from failure that lays out 8 techniques that work for me. We have a long way to go in BA and PM, unfortunately, capital is drying up.
@JeffreyMinder Thank you, I am starting grad school soon and need to decide whether I should do my concentration in Management Information Systems or Project Management
@mana2432 To effectively manage large systems requires expert project management. I would study MIS and ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library). The majority of what you need to learn is not taught at the University but through self-study and internal drive...never forget that
This summer I intend to study for a postgraduate course at Monash University in Australia, with the goal of launching a successful career as a Business Analyst.
Excellent! I am building a web system called PMStrong and it is dedicated to project management and business analysis to foster best practices and improve team communications. I also have a DVD coming out CBAP Exam Prep: Rapid Review DVD...stay tuned and great choice in careers!!!!
The need for solid Business Analysis has never been greater. Watch for the role of the BA to compete with the Project Manager as a "must have" for the coming decade.
Awesome explanation in the best logical manner , Thanx a lot :)

Awesome presentation. Just one question, if you did a masters in project management, can you become a Business Analyst?
mana2432 1 year ago
@mana2432 You can do anything you want. To be a great Business Analyst you must have a strong grasp of Project Management....and vice versa
