I believe the tall fiddler on the right side is Curt Burrell, who I worked with in Ft Collins Colorado back in the 70"s. Curt also played for Patsy Cline. Curt was an excellent singer and front man. Curt has passed on.
As for Crawford and overplaying? 'Scuse me? He hired Jimmy Crawford. You don't get restraint and half notes from him, and Faron knew it. Faron LIKED energy from his band.
The Fiddle player n the right as you view, is Curt Burrell, a man I met in Ft Collins Colorado when I lived there. He once played for Patsy Cline as I was told by him. We worked together in a band there with a former member of the Sons Of The Pioneers, Bob Mincer, and a drummer named Charley Hill. We played a lot of faron Young and Sons Of Pioneer music. Curt passed on a long time ago, so I was shocked to come across a video of him when he was so young and hansome. RIP Curt.
@BBAILEY466 ... Curt Burrell is my uncle... I would love to hear any stories you have about him sometime! He was a very talented musician... thank you for sharing :)
I had the pleasure of Booking Farom young in 1963 on Portladn OR~We became god friends from there ~Adn Boy what a GREAT Guy ~JUSt ask Willie Nelson ~Steve-;)
I had the pleasure of being the 1st Person to boook Faron young into a Nite Club in Portland Or Way bcak in 1969 ~I was 20 years old at the time~Faron and I sat up in the Penthouse while his Band Did the opening Part of the Show ~There was a Grad Piano over to the Rigth of us~Faron got up n went over opend it up~Sat down and Started palying SanFrancisco ~And Sang it also ~Waht a TALENT That soo Many never knew about~Damm i misss my Buddy~Steve
@Payola65 What a great thing to be able to say you were the first to book Faron Young , you were instrumental in helping him on his way that must be a great feeling .
Faron was one of my Dad's best friends in country music. (My Dad was Paul Wayne, who wrote and recorded "Angel on Paper." Dottie West later covered it on her first album). There'll never be another like the "Singing Sheriff!"
God Damn we are lucky Faron turned back to honky tonk in the late 60s and cut some classics. This might be the best, but he did a bunch of good ones. One of the BEST voices in country history, but y'all knew that.
Throughout the '60's and the '70's, it wasn't uncommon for lead instrument players to let loose, as Jimmy Crawford does here. Some performers wouldn't allow it and really made their road bands duplicate the original recording to the letter. Most often playing 'hot' was encouraged and responded to enthusiastically by the audiences who came to a particular artist's shows. It allowed for some real originality and made the names of the band members as important to know as the artist her/hisself.
I have the original single of this song and the steel break is not nearly as over played as here. This particular song was on one of the Porter Wagoner episodes and Doug Jernigan was the steeler on that version.. Excellent as always!
I like that overplayed steel guitar! You can't find a steel guitar in this crap they call country music today. Then you put a blessed voice like this man had with that steel you have magic!
@saamateis yeah that over played steel guitar from Jimmy Crawford is over indulgent but refreshing to look back on, he wouldnt get away with it in studio sessions but there were many steel players who did this, another example is Curley Chalker on the wilburn Brothers shows. Faron was a gigantic talent his phrasing is up there with Jones and Paycheck, but his playful "give me a great introduction" may have gone deeper when he felt forgotten, shame on the industry for forgetting greatness.
this a good one man check this out : i lost my mind over you last night, i just stopped in to honky tonk, tonight my misery and heartace just beginning hehehehe

@pedalman, I'd put his phrasing up there with Frank. Above George. And I love how he always got great energy out of the band.

Jimmy Crawford played pretty much the same stuff as he played on Faron's record. The other fiddle player was Red Hayes.
