While they aren't totally useless, for man on man self-defense, the recoil makes followup shots slow(and there's no guarantee you hit). For man on bear self-defense... well it's certainly an option, though something a bit smaller and thus giving faster followups may be more appropriate(by a bit smaller I mean .45 LC, .44 mag, or even .454 cassul).
Can't argue with pure fun of shooting big calibres though. ;)
@44magnum100 There's a huge difference. A longer barrel reduces the recoil. I've shot a a 500 Magnum with a 12" barrel and it's a much kinder gun to fire.

While they aren't totally useless, for man on man self-defense, the recoil makes followup shots slow(and there's no guarantee you hit). For man on bear self-defense... well it's certainly an option, though something a bit smaller and thus giving faster followups may be more appropriate(by a bit smaller I mean .45 LC, .44 mag, or even .454 cassul).
Can't argue with pure fun of shooting big calibres though. ;)

@44magnum100 There's a huge difference. A longer barrel reduces the recoil. I've shot a a 500 Magnum with a 12" barrel and it's a much kinder gun to fire.
