Asia is a huge land mass, so this might be a situation like when people say 'westerners', when they are referring to a practice that only happens in the US. US customs are very specific to that country, and applying them to all round eyes is often incorrect.

In China, it's natural for 2 women to hold hands or onto each other's arms, it's just part of the culture. Besides they looked like they were afraid of falling down because the ride was so bumpy.

I live in mexico and it is so common to see girls holding hands even huging, chidlren do it with their parents too, I have seen that in aglo culture touching is not very common, in mexico some guys mostly from ranch (haciendas) kiss their fatther in the mouth out of love and respect, some people in the city see it awkward

Young women like that probably have no idea about lesbians.
Parents and their adult children (esp. women) will also hold hands.
You can see infants dressed in "diapers" which expose
their butts so they can piss on sidewalks, too.
It's a different culture with different standards of behavior.

These are almost certainly not lesbians. Young Chinese women can often be seen holding hands with a close friend or best friend, and the relationship between the two is always platonic. I was in Greece, where a 40ish European woman and her husband were gawking and giggling over a masculine Scandinavian guy with his partner chatting with another couple about mundane things. I didn't get what the spectacle was for these Europeans, but found it an interesting sociological snapshot.
