Why did Japan not play defensive with 17 seconds to go at 7:52? He attacked and got counter attacked when he could have defended and dragged the time out until he wins. Maybe tired, nervous, greedy or wanted to put on a good on a show?
@Bananayoghurt1000 Because they are extremely light and fast. The object is to simply touch your opponent's body first. It's not a sword fight like you see in the movies.
-red/green light means hit, yellow means off target
-in foil, person who starts the attack first has priority
-if both attack at same time, person with priority gets the point
-if it is one green/red and one yellow, depending on who has priority, if it was the green/red light then that person would get the point. if the person who hit off target had priority, it would simply be a "non valide" (non valid) hit
Judge needs to clear his eyes. When the score was 38-37 Poland came in close range and Ota used it to make point, Poland was able to strike along but not on thorso. This point was just called "non valable" I can't agree with that at all!
it was a "non valide" (non valid) hit because it's Glonek attack, though Ota counter-attacked, it wasn't fast enough to produce a one lighter. Sometimes though, the counter attack will be awarded if the judge feels that the initial action produced a light too slow or if it took 2 or more actions. Hopefully im explaining this well enough.
@fanmanabc still should have been for ota, if you pause and stop very fast at around 7:43 you'll notice glonek comes in range but never straightened his arm (=no advantage or what it is called in english) in case the judge thinks otherwise, ota takes a parade 4 and sets the riposte even before glonek's white light engages. these judges have a slowmo replay if needed, i hate it when their pride has priority to judging correctly '-.-
@WeRideTonite You don't need a straightened arm, just a straightening arm (plus lunge/step-lunge/fleche/step-fleche), for an attack - the only time Glonek's arm needs to be straightening is just before Ota's lunge starts, and it does imo. The difference between a counter-attack and an attack on preparation can be quite small - some older fencers don't like foil being refereed this way, but that's how it's refereed these days. Also, Ota parries 4 after his c-attack lands, not before.
@landon30 i still think this is point for ota, glonek comes into distance but grabs no hold of iron whatsoever. when ota just straightens his arm and makes point glonek places his point somewhere non valable.
Fencing is one of the best sports. I do it now...so that's 1 year, I've been fencing for 1 year. I started last October and LOVE it. It requires mental and physical strongnes. In fencing you basically have to outsmart your opponent. All what happens is the movies is slash, parry, stab, perry...boring! REAL fencing is feint disengages and stuff like that. :)
fencing for a year and a half, and im a relatively fit guy, but fencing is tiring. to keep up the intensity like olympians is hard. though it might not look like much, but moving that fast with 4 layers (undershirt, sous plastron, plastron, and lamé) for that long at that intensity is hard work.
fencing was about pride and honor....... it was a martial art but it was not meant for actual combat..... unless your talking about saber..... and that was done from horseback....
@KytoNova Lol is that why their country is proper shit? They can't match Europe or the US. Think of every good technology or method of doing something etc. and it came from Europe or the US.
Yeah but larp doesn't use a scoring system like fencing does, as in.. it doesn't have the electrical equipment to keep track of the score like fencing does, would be cool if it did though then it would be like a game!
It would probably be better to look at if they did not stop it every 2 seconds (every touch with the "side" of the foil). It would also make it a much more challenging sport...
@SWCeagles2007 I suppose you could... but you would lose every time. Long swords are meant for slashing not piercing. In my stage combat class we actually had a discussion around a similar question. It wasn't whether you could use a long sword for fencing but rather which one would dominate. We ended up agreeing that it really depends on the wielder... but I still think I would put my bet on the rapier. I think I'd rather have speed over power.
Why are you only allowed to move backwards and forwards... In fencing you should be able to move sideways and in all directions and you should be able to vs more than just one person at a time..
@Dimitri0809 I am not the right person to ask but I would guess it has to do partly with scoring and partly with tradition. Before there were electronics involved, scoring was subject to human eyes so I imagine that keeping the sport parallel to the judge(s) was the easiest way to score it. Also, traditionally speaking, dueling matches, no matter the weapon, required a standard of etiquette. Always facing your opponent was a matter of honor hence why gun duels were done in a similar fashion.
@Dimitri0809 I'll also add this: In my stage combat class I was told that this "standard of etiquette" was mostly for show. So, if there weren't many people around to watch then surviving was a little more important than tradition or honor. Also, the "dance" of fencing positions you in such a way to get the maximum out of your weapon and that footwork, much of the time, faces you towards your opponent. Look up Rob Roy, with Liam Neeson, to see what traditional duels would have been like.
@kentocho They look so flimsy because the people controlling them have a lot of power coming from the base, and the weapon is slightly bent so when you thrust it doesn't stab through someone. It takes a lot of strength and precision to get the sword to move that fast. Make no mistake though, it's steel. I've never seen a foil get serious bent. I've seen several break in half though.
@zenthos01- o yeah, I dont doubt that at all, or that taekwondo uses katanas or whatever. Whats a taekwondo match like? Lol, its just that i saw some comments on here about like comparing katana fighting with fencing.
This to me seems like a horrible example of foil fencing.... there are no parries, advanced body motions (Ballestra/Flunge), strategy, or tactics. This is in fact rather horrible fencing. While they are quick and agile they display none of the nuances of A class fencers.
Omg this is insane. I thought i could get good quick becuz i was learning from one of the old champions but this is impossible. I now realize my teachers been messing with me the whole time
@yeahwhatever50 In my opinion this sint real fencing. This is just quick basic attacks without any real tactics or advanced movements. They dont even deceive parries or use balestra or flunge. "A Class" fencing is not what people should be learning as a recreational sport you teacher is probably teaching you correctly.
@cheesemuffin94 Are YOU fencing in International Championships? No? Then these guys are better than you, and you are not in a position to criticise their technique.
@zhivana I was responding to the fact that he was talking about how impossible it was to be this was to be this good and talking about my own personal experiences. I am allowed to have MYOWN personal beliefs without you complaining about it. I respect your opinion and the fact that you may disagree with me but you are not in charge of what I say.
@TheBProVo Yes, but you won't do that because you're obviously too cool to be a champion fencer?

Everything happens in less than 1/2 a second, so if you blink, there is a very good chance you missed it and you're already losing.
how could the japanese guy not win? i thought all japanese are great swordsmen and samurai warriors, unrivaled in their swordsmanship and ninja abilities... guess this proves me wrong. poland... apparently the polish are better ninjas than the japs. who woulda thought? grats, poland
there uniforms for the sport is so awesome. Slow mo this action with a driving soundtrack and you got yourself an advertisement for corporate ethics and policy. the uniforms are what makes this sport WORK. They look so futuristic. The sport itself is very precise which is anothermain reason i like it.
... I fail to see the point of this discussion about fencing; foils are not even real swords, they were used as training for rapiers, which were the true ones, and were much, much more deadlier than a foil.
Fencing swords are down-graded versions of the real ones, it's like, comparing a bokken to a true katana.
@tubermann1 The commands are in French because fencing originated in France and the entire sport is taught with the original French names of the actions. That is why even though a Japanese Fencer is bouting against a Polish fencer French is still used.
seriously, do all of you knuckle heads comparing, "samurai sword" fighting, with fencing, stop. Its embarassing, you probably have no Idea what you are talking about. Fencing isn't about actually hurting people. as you don't see people walking around with functional rapiers or foils.
@fleetfingers77 oh yeah of course i dont like comparing the two either, different rule sets and armor, fencing sword is a lot less rigid than the bamboo and i personally only do kendo because i practice other japanese arts and it goes well together, otherwise id be into fencing, its cheaper and a little more direct
@fleetfingers77 but i srsly did assume the japan dude would win it just cuz... u know... he's naturally a samurai warrior... and good at math. u know.
@fleetfingers77 Seriously, you may as well bitch that a Chess player wouldn't last a minute in a REAL castle siege, and that his fancy moves are no match for having hot oil poured on him from the archer's battlements.
@GilbertSmith They call fencing physical chess because once you get past the basic sucking phase you see it's a very mental game. It's not nearly as much about where your opponents blade is, as much as where you expect your opponents blade to be.
@fleetfingers77 Um, no. Fencing IS about hurting people. And a fencer was the zenith of bladed martial artists. He was the fastest, most precise, most agile, most skilled, most athletic and thus most deadly warrior to ever hold a blade. The Japanese martial artist was primitive and backwards in comparison.
A wireless system would be better because then you could have more than just 2 swordsmen fighting each other you could have multiple swordsman playing at the same time and have teams.
to be honest i got no swords skills at all, but if say i'm holding a foil, i would not have the balls to try and attack someone with a samurai sword. having said that, it might be a different mentally in the hands of professionals. To my understanding, samurai sword comes in different specs; difference in weight and length. but even if some swings the lightest samurai sword at me... it doesn't take a genius to know my only option is to dodge instead of trying to parry or block the attack
@jimmytrance There is also the difference between a katana and a foil/epee/or saber. A katana is sharp, fencing blades including the saber are not. You hold them differently, stand differently, and move differently. You attack and defend differently. It is not easy to dodge a fencing blade since they are light and easy to have change directions. You can't compare the two. Yes I dodge in fencing, but I can't do it all the time if I have any chance of reposting the attack (attacking back).
What terrible fencers. Not one backflip, summersault, swinging chandelier thrust, or a pair of pants cut from the waist to expose a pair of silly underwear. YAAWWWNN.
why are you all talking about the real life usefullness of the foil sword its just a sport and these guys over there are amazingly precise and fast you d better talk about them and not for these useless staff
@sdtgonzalez on the contrary, a flail-type sword like those used in fencing are what would be considered a fluid weapon. While more traditional weapons tend to be heavier and rely of fixed movements, a flimsy looking weapon like a foil is technically faster with less movement and therefore more agile. A long thin sword moved faster and can whip around a bulkier sword which would rely on thrusts and swings.
Why did Japan not play defensive with 17 seconds to go at 7:52? He attacked and got counter attacked when he could have defended and dragged the time out until he wins. Maybe tired, nervous, greedy or wanted to put on a good on a show?

there uniforms for the sport is so awesome. Slow mo this action with a driving soundtrack and you got yourself an advertisement for corporate ethics and policy. the uniforms are what makes this sport WORK. They look so futuristic. The sport itself is very precise which is anothermain reason i like it.
VertigaDesignMEDIA 9 months ago
... I fail to see the point of this discussion about fencing; foils are not even real swords, they were used as training for rapiers, which were the true ones, and were much, much more deadlier than a foil.
Fencing swords are down-graded versions of the real ones, it's like, comparing a bokken to a true katana.
Xerdocreisson 9 months ago
@tubermann1 The commands are in French because fencing originated in France and the entire sport is taught with the original French names of the actions. That is why even though a Japanese Fencer is bouting against a Polish fencer French is still used.

TheChampionofdoom 10 months ago
seriously, do all of you knuckle heads comparing, "samurai sword" fighting, with fencing, stop. Its embarassing, you probably have no Idea what you are talking about. Fencing isn't about actually hurting people. as you don't see people walking around with functional rapiers or foils.
fleetfingers77 10 months ago 40
@fleetfingers77 oh yeah of course i dont like comparing the two either, different rule sets and armor, fencing sword is a lot less rigid than the bamboo and i personally only do kendo because i practice other japanese arts and it goes well together, otherwise id be into fencing, its cheaper and a little more direct
Taud 9 months ago
@fleetfingers77 but i srsly did assume the japan dude would win it just cuz... u know... he's naturally a samurai warrior... and good at math. u know.
presbarkeep 7 months ago
@fleetfingers77 this kind of reminds me of Taekwondo olympics. they kind of act the same the way they bounce then attack.
Zenthos01 7 months ago
@fleetfingers77 Seriously, you may as well bitch that a Chess player wouldn't last a minute in a REAL castle siege, and that his fancy moves are no match for having hot oil poured on him from the archer's battlements.
GilbertSmith 5 months ago
@GilbertSmith They call fencing physical chess because once you get past the basic sucking phase you see it's a very mental game. It's not nearly as much about where your opponents blade is, as much as where you expect your opponents blade to be.
roamingmadnessify 5 months ago
@fleetfingers77 Um, no. Fencing IS about hurting people. And a fencer was the zenith of bladed martial artists. He was the fastest, most precise, most agile, most skilled, most athletic and thus most deadly warrior to ever hold a blade. The Japanese martial artist was primitive and backwards in comparison.

@TaskForceSixTwoSix what happens when that flimsy metal wire hits full armor and your body gets sliced in half by a katana or english broadsword?

@Amagieke it's One more time by Daft Punk
ber86nardo 10 months ago
A wireless system would be better because then you could have more than just 2 swordsmen fighting each other you could have multiple swordsman playing at the same time and have teams.
Dimitri0809 10 months ago
@Dimitri0809 wireless systems interfere with eachother and are sometimes unlreliable

Why do they keep stopping when no one even lays a hit?
mdusablo 10 months ago
@mdusablo
Because in foil, you can only hit the proper target area and whenever you land a touch off-target, action stops.

to be honest i got no swords skills at all, but if say i'm holding a foil, i would not have the balls to try and attack someone with a samurai sword. having said that, it might be a different mentally in the hands of professionals. To my understanding, samurai sword comes in different specs; difference in weight and length. but even if some swings the lightest samurai sword at me... it doesn't take a genius to know my only option is to dodge instead of trying to parry or block the attack
jimmytrance 10 months ago
@jimmytrance There is also the difference between a katana and a foil/epee/or saber. A katana is sharp, fencing blades including the saber are not. You hold them differently, stand differently, and move differently. You attack and defend differently. It is not easy to dodge a fencing blade since they are light and easy to have change directions. You can't compare the two. Yes I dodge in fencing, but I can't do it all the time if I have any chance of reposting the attack (attacking back).

World's most useless martial art!!
sdtgonzalez 11 months ago
@sdtgonzalez on the contrary, a flail-type sword like those used in fencing are what would be considered a fluid weapon. While more traditional weapons tend to be heavier and rely of fixed movements, a flimsy looking weapon like a foil is technically faster with less movement and therefore more agile. A long thin sword moved faster and can whip around a bulkier sword which would rely on thrusts and swings.
wtfan 11 months ago
@wtfan But is still useless. Whats the possibility of you having a flail-type sword in a REAL situation.
