Ok, as with EVERYTHING, if you look for similarities you will find them. And even though I like both franchises, Star Trek had much more of an impact on the world than Star Wars, and no matter what, Star Trek will be my favorite sci-fi franchise until the day I die.
Oh, come on! At the very least, you could have used the scene where Obi-wan cuts off the walrus man's arm as opposed to the Sand People attack. This isn't even a good critique.
Well. one could sit around cutting up any number of films to show something similar in any number of other films, however, as one refrains from sperg-lording. its moot.
these are all common scenes in any Sci-fi movie: The fights, the flights over futuristic cities, the hero vs. the villain, the triumph at the end. Take western movies, for example and you can find many repeating elements: The gunfight, the saloon card game/fistfight, the cattle drive, circling the wagons, coffee pot in the campfire, stagecoach/train robbery, the hero riding West into the sunset at the end.
Every PG-13 sci-fi movie is restricted in the way emotion and "emotional scenes" are packaged to the audience. That's why most shots are so bland and similar. Star Wars could've done panning shots of long lines of half dead Storm Troopers pitifully calling out the names of their family members as they choke on blood. Star Trek could have shown long, continuous shots of the pain and damage phasers cause when they are running low on energy and humanely vaporizing isn't an survivable choice.
this is commical, do you see jesus in toast too?.. And if you really want to talk about accidently being alike Star treek is 11 the original came 11 years before star wars. Then you might want to ask yourself why the 2 are similar, maybe because star trek was doing so well? hmm could it be? .. OR maybe! justttttt maybe its because the elements you tock are some very common elements in space movies and such. I find it funny.
Each movie with an epic storyline has these elements in it. Try to find them in "Lord of the Rings" or "Matrix". Although they are placed in a totally different world, the search won't last long ;)
I was 6 when the first episode of StarTrek was broadcasted. I grew up with William Shatner :P
@neomp5 Hey, I grew up on Star Wars; I was a year-and-a-half old when the first movie was released and I've been a fan my whole life. Star Trek always fell flat for me; it lacked the elements that always fired me up about Star Wars. I've since found Trek I DO like--Voyager ain't bad, and I dug the first two seasons of Enterprise--but I still preferred Star Wars.
The reboot movie I LOVED. It felt different from regular Trek in a way that spoke to me.
star trek isn't supposed to have the things that make star wars great. star trek is a science drama about human potential, while star wars is a wuxia-style fantasy about historical and mythological parallels. the star trek remake film was neither, it was a brainless action flick.
@neomp5 Great post. I myself wondered why no one asked things like "Who's Nero? Why is he so mad? Why does he want to kill everything? How'd he get Red Matter? How come red matter can either send you back in time or turn into a black hole and kill you? How does a misfit jerk get his own ship all of a sudden at the end?" and so on and so forth.
I thought it was one of best Star Trek movies IMO, the Borg movie was very good as well. I'm also a big fan of Star Wars, but let's be honest. Star Wars is roughly 13 hours of material and contains many cliche scenes and most scenes in this video are just these cliche, generic action film scenes and these kinds of videos could be made from hundreds of other movies. But I think the sword thing at 3.55 is a direct reference to SW. Nonetheless it was a fun video and I had fun time watching it.
@CptCryBaby Joseph Campbell's theories aren't exactly universally agreed upon. Since Lucas consciously followed them, obviously his movies will fit the mold. And besides both of these scenes draw off movie cliches that existed long before either movie. It also takes ignoring the actual stories behind them to compare them. The Star Trek scene was done to show that Kirk was a reckless troublemaker. The Star Wars scene was done to show how awesome and totally cool Anakin is, or something...
This is actually rather funny... whenever i see that creature grabbing that smaller one crashing up through the ice, the first thing that runs through my head is "there's always a bigger fish" XD
It's hard to really come up with anything totally original. Just like in music. For example Avatar's story wasn't very original, but the special effects were outstanding. The Star Trek movie needed a new look and style. I didn't even like the Nemesis one.

So I shall happily mention both together, since both are almost as bad as each other.

That movie is great. It took the good parts from Star Wars and merged them with it's own good parts. Adopt, adapt, evolve.
It's so secret JJ loves "WARS" over "TREK" - as sack-religious as that is - I don't agree with making "TREK" like "WARS", but to be honest, he mkes a hell of a Trek film!
Though I admire your effort in putting this together, Star Trek came first and was clearly the inspiration for Star Wars. So, its almost certainly the other way round.
The only thing Star Trek (2009) did was to utterly disrespect Gene Roddenberry. That's all it did successully, and as a long-time Trekkie, I will never support another Abrams' made Star Trek film because he clearly doesn't understand either the source material, what Roddenberry wanted, OR the fans. Or rather, he doesn't respect all of the above.
wow.. I love reading the comment of these type of videos....totaly missing the point and starts off the whole Sw is better...NO St is better....just to funny. i think after see so many of his videos, and the way he makes fun of both ST and SW it truely looks like he made this after the writers and director said "I never watched star trek" and "I wanted this to have a Star wars feel to it" so it looks more like he is makeing fun of that, plus showing how much JJ is truely so unoriginal.
Most of these scenes are standard science fiction clichés; the best you can hope for is that they're done in a new or interesting way. LucasFilm and ILM have done a TON of special effects for the Star Trek franchise and have had a friendly relationship for decades. ILM also loves to put Star Wars references in the background of Star Trek scenes (look for the Millennium Falcon fighting the Borg in First Contact and R2-D2 among the debris orbiting Vulcan in Star Trek XI).
In Defense of this video, for everyone who claims these are just coincidences, in the 500 hours of STAR TREK I have never seen car chases, cars crashing through barricades, motorcycle chases, award ceremonies in giant auditoriums, planets explode or little kids beating each other up. Rarely on Trek have I seen ice planets (Trek 6) or alien bars (not counting Quarks) or sword fighting that was not Klingons or fencing. These things are rare in Star Trek, yet they're all over Trek2009. And R2D2.
Hell I don't understand the dislikes. Even I was blown away by the similarities in this video and I am a Trekkie as long as I can remember :) BTW, I liked ST XI however I strictly keep it apart from the original canon. Love the original but give some space for new ideas :)
Abrams, the self described "Star Wars" geek was just trying to enjoy his consolation prize (Star Trek) because Lucas wouldn't let him near his true love. So he re-makes "Trek" in his own image. Even added R2-D2. Now I'm no hater of "Star Wars," even though I like "Trek" better, I enjoy both. But can we keep the separate, please?!
Wow the poster of this video is really really stretching it. So, I assume they believe that anything that has ever been done in Star Wars in any way belongs to the franchise? Ah! Live Free of Die Hard is derivative of Star Wars, John breathes! So does Han Solo! It is a copy! .... sigh..... This is why I don't like Star Wars fanboys. And I like Star Wars, just don't think it is the greatest thing ever filmed. It could have a chance if they made the Han Solo trilogy into films though.
@WithFriendsLikeHis no, the point was to show the similarities in style and tone of the film.
it wasn't a star-trek style film, it was a star wars style film.
i don't think this is a bad thing. in fact i've been saying for years that star trek should take a lesson from star wars in how to do space adventure films.
@GeneralGrin Nah. He's pretty right. These are stretches.
While I'd say that Abrams' Star Trek has more similarities to Star Wars (perhaps even a little too much similarity) than any Star Trek ever has previously, I'd also say that those in the video are not it hehehe
@GeneralGrin Mow, I'm a Trek fan but also happen to like the Star Wars films - well the original ones anyway! But I've never seen the point in the pointless debates, comparing of the two. The only real similarity is the fact that they are set in space. It's only my opinion of course but I've always thought that Star Wars was always about action and adventure, almost western epic in space, and Trek was always about the more scientific side, exploration and character study.
@GeneralGrin Disagree completely. Considering the prequels are awful and the Star Trek films, not counting the Original Star Wars trilogy, were amazing (not counting post First Contact).
@GeneralGrin there can be more then one good style to a film, wrath of khan was a great film. when they made wrath of khan the wrighter went backand watched all the 60's episode and found what worked and what made the show good. if JJ knew what made star trek good insted of haveing just enough elements to call it trek is what I would have liked to see
@GeneralGrin If that's the case, you failed, as I wasn't aware that Lucas held the trademarks to car chases, gun fights, sword fights, inspirational moments, faster-than-light travel, spaceships, space battles, weird looking aliens, bar fights, father/son relationships, interesting protagonists, interesting villians, or anything else that makes for interesting cinema.
Get your head out of your ass, or Lucas' ass... which ever it's further up.
It's not at all similar to Star Wars. The "style and tone" of the film?
- A slave boy winning a Podrace to help out a Jedi vs. a young goody-goody finally rebelling and stealing his dad's car? Completely different in both scenes!
- A slowly-turning-evil Anakin riding a hoverbike on his way to kill a tribe of sandpeople vs. Jim Kirk happily riding his motorbike along a dirt road? How can these scenes be more unalike! Completely opposite moods and motives!
But that's the point I'm trying to make - the visual styles of the films aren't similar either! The only similarities between the two franchises is the heavy use of CGI. Any other likeness is merely coincidental - we are dealing with the two main founders of 'space-centered' science fiction, after all. And you want Star Trek to look more like Star Wars?! Heaven help us! The recent trilogy was a shambles!
Of course the special effects were great, the recent trilogy was made in the new millennia! (Phantom Menace aside.) With the exception of Nemesis (which, like Star Wars, had an appalling plot and script but excelled visually), all of the Star Trek films were from the 80s and 90s - The Motion Picture was actually from the 70s! Of course the special effects were going to seem comparatively substandard! But for their time (and budget), they were still impressive.
@GeneralGrin shut the fuck up you crazy lifeless nerd.star trek does space adventures way better,as seen in star trek XI.star wars is retarded now,its made for little kids dude, star trek now is more for adults.i never seen luke or young vader get it on with a green babe.
I think honestly that much of this speculation must have began with some of the director's comments on the Star Trek 2009 DVD when HE compared some of his visual scenes to Star Wars scenes - he was not trying to steal from Star Wars, but some scenes are going to be similar. You have your good-bye scenes and your moment of truth scenes, your stand off scenes and your funny moments in REAL LIFE too - Star Wars had derivative scenes from many films, EVERY movie can be compared this way.
Establishing the hero as a badboy who drives fast cars and ride motorcycles but has a dark moody side was hardly new to Star Wars. Similarities in cinematography are common because there are certain conventions in movies that get used over and over because *gasp* they WORK.
@GeneralGrin you really didn't represent the point properly. The details are different, and I could compare hundreds of movies the way you did. It's the main plots that are similar, and copies of star wars. Some giant machine blows up a planet, a young upstart destroys it, gets awarded, but not before it kills the costars family and destroys a massive spacefleet. There's the similarities.
I fail to see the similarity...Star Trek actually uses real sets and doesn't spend half the movie having the protagonist whine about how unfair his life is so?
Every single film, no matter how original it seems to be, copied or was inspired by another film or events and ideas. Star Wars was inspired by Greek and Ancient stories. In a New Hope the idea of the story being shown through the eyes of the Droids was inspired from Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress. Nothing is original, only ideas that have taken a different form :)
OR MAYBE, JUST MAYBE... The fact that Star Trek was created BEFORE Star Wars escapes you. Dammit what is with these Lucas Hounds and trying to disprove The Trek cause they be jealous of the fandom of all fandoms??
I must say that most of these scenes are action related, how does one 'rip off' violence? Is one of Nero's men not allowed to choke Kirk because Vader did it also?
Also this compares multiple movies to one movie, it's a little ridiculous to honestly believe that there will not be some similarities between them and this when both are space science fiction. Coincidences.
@sadailinikada86 As do I. Of course 'Star Trek' is owned by CBS while 'Star Wars' is owned by Lucasfilm. I don't have a favorite character from either franchise.
As a fan of both Star Trek and Star Wars, I can honestly say that this gave me a chuckle. I'm not sure what the posters intentions where, but for me this was a pretty funny (in a good way).
Then again I have that strange ability to not take movies and TV shows 150% seriously and instead enjoy them for what they are.
Ok, as with EVERYTHING, if you look for similarities you will find them. And even though I like both franchises, Star Trek had much more of an impact on the world than Star Wars, and no matter what, Star Trek will be my favorite sci-fi franchise until the day I die.

It's so secret JJ loves "WARS" over "TREK" - as sack-religious as that is - I don't agree with making "TREK" like "WARS", but to be honest, he mkes a hell of a Trek film!

People need to relax and as someone pointed out it was the general pacing of the movie and the similar themes that makes this comparison funny.
Asmoday78 4 months ago
Though I admire your effort in putting this together, Star Trek came first and was clearly the inspiration for Star Wars. So, its almost certainly the other way round.
gunner60201 4 months ago

1crazyfocker 4 months ago
Most of these scenes are standard science fiction clichés; the best you can hope for is that they're done in a new or interesting way. LucasFilm and ILM have done a TON of special effects for the Star Trek franchise and have had a friendly relationship for decades. ILM also loves to put Star Wars references in the background of Star Trek scenes (look for the Millennium Falcon fighting the Borg in First Contact and R2-D2 among the debris orbiting Vulcan in Star Trek XI).
thespecialneedsgroup 4 months ago

Love the original but give some space for new ideas :)
holodock 5 months ago

WithFriendsLikeHis 5 months ago 21
@WithFriendsLikeHis no, the point was to show the similarities in style and tone of the film.
it wasn't a star-trek style film, it was a star wars style film.
i don't think this is a bad thing. in fact i've been saying for years that star trek should take a lesson from star wars in how to do space adventure films.
GeneralGrin 5 months ago
@GeneralGrin Nah. He's pretty right. These are stretches.
While I'd say that Abrams' Star Trek has more similarities to Star Wars (perhaps even a little too much similarity) than any Star Trek ever has previously, I'd also say that those in the video are not it hehehe
WinstonSmith6079 5 months ago
@GeneralGrin Mow, I'm a Trek fan but also happen to like the Star Wars films - well the original ones anyway! But I've never seen the point in the pointless debates, comparing of the two. The only real similarity is the fact that they are set in space. It's only my opinion of course but I've always thought that Star Wars was always about action and adventure, almost western epic in space, and Trek was always about the more scientific side, exploration and character study.

Get your head out of your ass, or Lucas' ass... which ever it's further up.
satyrquaze 4 months ago
@GeneralGrin
Egabbacknuks 3 months ago 2
@Egabbacknuks I'm talking about the visual style of the films, not the story.
I don't think this is a bad thing by the way, I always said that Star Trek films should be more like the star wars films in the visual style
GeneralGrin 3 months ago
@GeneralGrin
Egabbacknuks 3 months ago 2
@Egabbacknuks the recent star wars trilogy was bad in terms of plot and characters, but the special effects were great.
star trek was always lagging behind in its special effects and action. this was the first time it reached the same level
GeneralGrin 3 months ago
@GeneralGrin
Egabbacknuks 3 months ago
@GeneralGrin shut the fuck up you crazy lifeless nerd.star trek does space adventures way better,as seen in star trek XI.star wars is retarded now,its made for little kids dude, star trek now is more for adults.i never seen luke or young vader get it on with a green babe.

dodsonsth 5 months ago

How someone can invert reality, and claim STXI was derivative of Star Wars is pretty funny.
Before Star Wars on Star Trek:
1. Gay robots.
2. Aliens with antennae.
3. White ships.
4. Warp drive, even if you hack it and call it hyperspace.
5. Hairy aliens.
Star Wars is one big jedi mind trick if you think Star Trek was derived from IT.
Fine, Scotty adopted a Jawa, I'll give you that.

There's the similarities.

mjmanning123 4 months ago
I fail to see the similarity...Star Trek actually uses real sets and doesn't spend half the movie having the protagonist whine about how unfair his life is so?
dalejrfanfreak 6 months ago
That, and by that logic - Star Wars is set in space. Star Trek came out over 10 years before; therefore, Star Wars ripped off Star Trek.

Star Wars fanboys need to shush ;p
Skrayper 6 months ago
Every single film, no matter how original it seems to be, copied or was inspired by another film or events and ideas. Star Wars was inspired by Greek and Ancient stories. In a New Hope the idea of the story being shown through the eyes of the Droids was inspired from Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress. Nothing is original, only ideas that have taken a different form :)
OnlyFoolsAndHorsesHQ 6 months ago

I must say that most of these scenes are action related, how does one 'rip off' violence? Is one of Nero's men not allowed to choke Kirk because Vader did it also?
Also this compares multiple movies to one movie, it's a little ridiculous to honestly believe that there will not be some similarities between them and this when both are space science fiction. Coincidences.
