What I did to face the first gym leader is I evolved Torchic and then into Combusken(I think I spelled that wrong) and then it learned Double kick so it was a really easy challenge

I don't get why shedinja has 45 defense stat. and 35 special defense stat. when it only has one hp. So I recommend if you want a shedinja, catch a nincada with a nature the decreases it's defense stat. or special defense stat..

this gym really isn't bad at all with torchic, actually, if it's evolved into combusken (which you were... one level away from evolving...), because Combusken gets a fighting move to destroy those rock types, and also fighting resists rock, so combusken won't be weak to rock. =)
