To clear things up: many of you see Fischer as a great person and respect him. There is nothing wrong with that, but keep in mind he was a little bit crazy and probably not the best person around.
Bobby Fischer has to be the greatest chess player of all times. A genius like him comes once every thousand years. He should be given his due respect and be honored by all chess players and lovers of the game of chess.
@MrAnalfister88 By capturing the bishop he took away the threat on his queen. If that bishop wasn't there it would have been a good fork, but now it would get you a rook for a queen.
After 21:15 Bobby could have easily move the bishop to D6 and "check" the king which leaves Byrne to 2 things, either move the king which would have led his queen to die or he could have moved the queen to kill the bishop which would have also killed the queen by the knight at D6!
@schoolboyGETxIT It's covered by the king. He could have brought his knight to d7 to threaten the square with both, but before he could have gotten there, the Bishop and king were already gone, and the attack on his king had begun. So no, Byrne had no mate avaialbe and by that point in the game he was going to lose.
@schoolboyGETxIT you are wrong. King would have took. Come on guys.Really? you are not thinking 2 or 3 or 4 steps ahead. You are asking questions about 1 step ahead and watching bobby fischer? You need to be in beginners class. Dont waste your time in here. I don't mean to be rude, but REALLY? ALSO either you have 2 accounts or two people that bad & new on the same day, w/ the same question? Its not even "what if __" Dude its 1 move!! King takes queen man, come on!! sorry
@johnmrrs i asked myself the same. but imagine after Bxe6, then Qb5+.... at least compensation by taking white's bishop back or even continue attacking with Ne2. that's what I see in this case.
@johnmrrs No Fischer is not, because if Byrne captures the Bishop, Fisher would just capture back with either the rook or his king side pawn, rook works better though.
This is annoying... it is not Fischer vs Byrne... it is Byrne vs Fischer. White is listed first. Ridiculous mistake. I wondered what the hell was going on for a while.
@imlivinitupniggaz true. But the fact is, he saw checkmate. Plus he can see many moves ahead. Hes a genius. I just looked at it and the king is beside the bishop. So the bishop cant move lmfao
Hey Kevin, thanks for all of this tireless work you do. I really have learned more than I probably realize in watching your commentaries about these great games. In this one, in particular, the 'windmill' combination that Fischer plays is so deeply beautiful, and you do a wonderful job setting us up for understanding its development and execution. Keep up the amazing work, friend, both here and on the Math site. I am definitely a fan.
13 year old!!!! its just crazy....truly one of the greatest....I cannot even imagine his moves...u would almost have to be able to predict the future with certainty to make those moves...Amazing...truly Amazing..
Once Fischer sacs the queen, it's a thing of beauty to see how all of his pieces are working together and not only is Byrne's king a puppet on a string, but his pieces are all useless.
HHHAHHAHAHAHAHA i got the move!!!! gimme a PRIZE!!!
but, no, seriously, i did get the meove cause i DID SEE the weak pawn and wen he does that fischer moves the knight to the weak pawn to fork the queen and the rook and fyi the last part i typed was a guess so tell me if im right
@tonyt3htiger If the queen takes knight on c3 then the black queen can easily take the bishop on c5. If white retakes with pawn takes queen c5 then the bishop from g7 can capture the queen on c3.
@TheFearUnlimited What are you talking about? That would have put Fisher's king in check. Plus, black started at the top of the board, so his pawn can't move backwards to promote it to a queen lol.
In my opinion, at 22:49, black should move a2 to a1, which force the king to h2, then move the bishop to d6, which, I think, could end the game faster. Very good game though
@yeubongda07 Maybe, but Fisher's pawns on b5 and c6 served as an excellent shield because they worked together with the bishops. Which essentially prevented the white queen from reaching the a file.
helo chesswebsite and chesscomunity. i have no chessengine yet so i cant figure it out myself. But what would be the plan for black if white, instead of taking the queen on b6, took the bishop on e6. would have been the plan queen on b4? regaining material by checkmate threating?
@berberic oubs i meant queen on b5 instead of b4. or maybe knight on b5? but i dont see something good for that knight move. i would bet on queen on b5.
Good analysis of a historic game. However, anyone else notice how he calls Donald Byrne simply by his last name, "Byrne", yet he says Bobby Fischer's name in full *every single time*? Damn.
What if white played Bxe6 instead of Bxb6 at 16.25, I think this will be the best move.... Any way, all will look at capturing the big and strong piece, QUEEN, at that situation, so may be the white have hesitated and so trapped. But, he should keep in mind that he is Bobby Fisher.
I can see what Byrne was upto with Bg5 his next move would of been e4e5 attacking the Knight Fischer moves the knight and Be7 forking the Queen & Rook. Since Bobby had the move of the century we didnt get to see it.
That Byrne guy must be mud!! 21.16sec why did he move his 'Queen' d8, b8? And how come Bobby didn't move his 'bishop' f8, d6' putting the King in check and forcing the 'Queen' to execute with Black knight taking 'Queen' and then take it apart from there?? Well I am a very good player a rating of 2000pts ;)
I actually guessed it after about a minute. But to be fair, I only noticed that Fischer gained 3 or so moves to attack the Queen and advance. I'm about to find out why.
Another way to checkmated is 39 ..Bishop a3 40 King necessarily b1 and then the rook goes to d2, e2 or f2 and whatever Byrne do, next rook to d1, e1 or f1.
Brilliant play by Fischer, but pretty poor play by a GM like Byrne. The queen on C4 and the bishop on F4 are poorly placed for Byrne and Fischer completely exploited those positional errors.

@The5thAngelRose Sir, you are quite pitiable. You would need an extra Queen to Checkmate me! Now you're claiming victory because, in your feeble mind "DERP if you say, it must be TRUU" You are a lying Zionist faggot, over and out.
@MrJbcjj Then ...Qb5+ and then the same sequence of knight moves. This would be devistating, white can no longer castle and his rook on h1 is basically dead, and black retains its queen.
this makes me wish i started playing chess at a young age. even when speculating games and moves like this, it's so different when you get into a game yourself. bravo, this is a game any person with an understanding of chess should see.
why is this the match of the century? it seems pretty typical to me. also, why didn't byrne early on use his pawn to attack the black knight? that would have put bobby on the defensive. I'm only rated 1500 and that's what I would have done.
It is evidence that BF is not wired in his brain the way most of us are. It is as if BF did a lot of games without his queen on purpose...not much afraid to lose her in certain situations. After the match the day must have turned into a terrible day for Byrne....if he knew what BF would achive later on in life with chess he would not have felt much shame....I guess.
Makes you really appreciate Bobby's chess genius and Robert Byrne was a great player in his own right but to think the Fischer handled him like this at age 13 ... it really is the game of the century!
Bobby Fischer was a great mind, until he went fucking crazy and started radically hating everyone and everything. I guess that much power is to much to handle for a young mind.
At 15:30, how would blocking with whites bishop to e7 turn out? In the resulting exchange he'd lose a minor piece (and the attack on blacks queen) but still be able to castle (and then have his rooks connected) wouldn't he? I'm only an amateur so I've probably missed something simple but I'm just curious!
As an avid and mediocre (at best) chess player, I wanted to let you know that your time and effort providing these great games does not go unappreciated. I also very much enjoy your commentary.

Bg5 is terrible, so vulnerable. You'd know that even if you're new to chess. I guess he underestimated Fischer big time. Beautiful queen sac, too.

why is this the match of the century? it seems pretty typical to me. also, why didn't byrne early on use his pawn to attack the black knight? that would have put bobby on the defensive.

Why did white not take the rook @f8 with Bichop @e7 but instead white played bischop @f1 to c4?

Makes you really appreciate Bobby's chess genius and Robert Byrne was a great player in his own right but to think the Fischer handled him like this at age 13 ... it really is the game of the century!

Bobby Fischer was a great mind, until he went fucking crazy and started radically hating everyone and everything. I guess that much power is to much to handle for a young mind.

all his pieces work together, Thank you so much, I learned that I have a lot to learn. Best of me to you.

At 21:15 did bobby fischer miss Bd6ch forking king and queen protected by the knight? The pawn advance was not necessary...
ACueStickband 4 months ago
@ACueStickband the bishop is pinned to the king..fischer could not have missed that :)

@iainmcke then knght takes d1 is winning
lfroggyl 4 months ago
then knight takes d1 winning material. and the queen escapes capture since the bishop moved

As an avid and mediocre (at best) chess player, I wanted to let you know that your time and effort providing these great games does not go unappreciated. I also very much enjoy your commentary.
