Nice video! I grew up on Oahu years ago ('40s through '60s) and left when I graduated from UH and went into the Air Force. The last time I was back was in '93 for my 30th HS reunion (Kailua High). I sure miss the place and Agnes' dancing brings back many fond memories of living in the Islands. Great job--thanks so much!
We would really appreciate it if the person holding the camera won't gyrate with the dancers while recording. Stay still =) and leave the dancing to the dancers. Peace.

REPRESENT SISTAH AGNES! Keep performing and do what you do best. Don't let little comments like 281baby713 bother you..some people R born 2 B J..N untalented. Give the ohana R aloha..
she's the best in your opinion. iv danced with a 300 pound real Tahitian vahine, she dance's better then this Tahitian wana be. people go visit Tahiti and see for your own eyes who is the best. i clicked on this clip hoping it would be one of "the best Tahitian dancer" she can shake but she's not a natural beauty. 2 star's for trying!
I llloooovvvveeee it!!!! Great faapuru:) sorri if I spelled it wrong.... I dance but am not even close to her advance level.. Keep going !! Chee hoo!!!
She is a great dancer. She shows confidence which makes her look professional. But I wouldnt agree that she's the best tahitian dancer ever...she seems to give off a haughty look when dancing which takes away the true beauty of tahitian dancing. All in all... kudos to her.
Wow, thats Agnes? She looks so different all grown up. I competed with her a few times when we were young at the Kaua'i Tahiti Fete, and because dancers were lined up alphabetically I was always next to her. I hated it cause she was sooo good! Still beautiful and still rippin!
well i wouldn't say the best dancer but she's up there... beautiful fa'arapu but i would like to see her hold her fa'arapu for more than 10 seconds. great dancer though, she really represents our culture well
i am speechless... we learn this type of dancing as an elective at my school... and i can sadly say that i will never be able to do that in my life!!!! i praise her!!! lol
women should look like this, a little thick, enough to shake it. u dont have to be SUPPER skinny, ONLY if its natural. YUP this is awesome Imma get some Tahitian dance dvds this looks like a great workout
yeah agnes is awesome, shes well known in the dancing world since shes been a top dancer since she was a kid. She also has won pretty much every competition at least once, and she teaches the girls of Maohi Nui
yea that'sz Agnes Matila,,, she isz samoan & her family ownsz the group Maohi Nui. She used to teach at Wheeler Middle School but i'm not sure if she still does,,, i think her mom does though...
she also used to teach tahitian over at Wheeler Middle School too so yea...
wow... sort of like Beyonce to the power of ten haha... at first I thought it was exciting but it seems kind of hard to do really... great exercise for women I guess respect! :-)
a men to that! LOve the encourage ment from women who dances that isnt stick figure skinny! Cause people need to see Polynesians come in all shapes n sizes!
I think she is a very good tahitian dancer. And for the comments all you're leaving here I can sense a lot of admiration but also very much confusion. Of course we all agree she is great, but perhaps the title "the best tahitian dancer" would be an exageration. In Tahiti there's a year-to-year competition to chalenge that title, and I've seen many dancers do better than this. Besides, as far as we can see, she is in a public show, not a competition. Maururu Aloha from Mexico!
anecosita-- that isz my teacher Agnes Matila & ur indeed right that isz a public show... she volunteered to do the show after her & her group (Maohi Nui) won the contest in Tahiti as they had done the 2 yrsz befor that... so i guess it'sz safe to say she wasz the "best Tahitian Dancer" at the moment...
Agnes also holds the title of "best Samoan Tahitian Dancer" so yea JSYK...
@wowszersz1mpoly It's great to know that!. Congratulations and I envy you in a good way for having that awesome teacher!. Send u greetings from Mexico! Maururu!
any tahitian dancer that turns her back on the crowd more than she needs to has so much to learn, such as? well grace, fluid movement with hands, motions, expressions etc. Tahitian dancing is more than fa'arapu reallllly fast.she is a very talented and beautiful dancer but it looks like she really knows it too. keep up the wonderful passion in learning the tahitian culture, we are all connected.
Well, i dont think she has much to learn because she was awarded the as the best Tahitian dancer two years ago, so i dont know what you are talking about.
of course she did, she is very good. what i am saying is that she needs more hand gesture, fluid movement, less back to the crowd. I do know what i am talking about i am tahitian and have grown up around it. She is good for a hawaiian/samoan girl dancing and learning tahitian, and that is probably why she won the award, but she cannot compare. maururu roa. i admire your interest in the culture do more research you will love it and see what i mean then.
Okay, lol. Im not even Tahitian or anything like that. i just grew up here. Im latino, haha. So i dont know what much about the heritage and stuff. BLAH!
I agree. it seems whatever genre of dance people are most easily impressed w/ fast, flashy movements (&sadly many dancers focus on learning this &neglect the rest). Maybe the poster can relate to Salsa dancers who impress crowds by doing many spins & crazy combinations, but the subtlety &expression of the music aren't there... if you took away the flashy moves, there wouldn't be much left &for me (Salsa is in my blood) dance is all about feeling the music in your body, not just performing tricks
Hey now. You dont need to be calling people out here. She is not only a Tahitian dancer. She does all different types of Polynesian dancing. And can you do what she is doing. And would you be able to win awards, just like her?
I wasn't trying to call anyone out actually. In my comment I agreed w/ yannahz7 saying she was a talented&beautiful dancer. I was offering more of a general observation of dance/dance viewers by expounding on her comment that dance is about more than just fast, impressive movements &gave an example from my world of dance that I thought you might be able to relate to (you said you were Latino so whether or not you dance Salsa is one thing, but the likelihood of your being exposed to it is another
I grew up in Hawaii, so i really dont know anything about my latino side. I know more about the island i am living on. I care more about where i am not more than were my family care from a long time ago.
again, no offense was intended, I was simply responding to your comment: "Im not even Tahitian or anything like that. i just grew up here. Im latino, haha. So i dont know what much about the heritage and stuff. BLAH!"
To me that comment sounded like you knew/cared more about latino culture than polynesian culture.... can you see why I would have been misled by it?
I was relating general public reaction to my world of dance: latin (which can involve "tricks" that can impress disproportionately to any actual musicality & real dance talent). I wasn't saying she is doing "tricks" - it was an analogy: In this genre super fast hip movements tend to "wow" an audience more than any slow fluid movements, which can lead to some 1 dimensional "impressive" dancers... but I'm NOT saying SHE's 1 dimensional! I was just making a general observation re: dance audiences.
she used to be my kumu (teacher) & all she kept tellin us was to practice all the time if we were really serious about dancing.
Kumu Agnes also does hula really well too.
she does a whole bunch of national stuff. she was in a bank of america commercial representing hawaii & she was gonna be in the T.I. video that he did here in hawaii too, but she didnt & there's a HILARIOUS story behind that. so yea.
yay dis is agnes...go girl and please believe me she is the best samoan tahitian dancer there is i have not met anyone better than her she has taught me everything i know...thanks....you go girl rise above that perfection....much alofas suga
Bravo, natural, lovely soft hands, effortless i wonder to watch feet buring this performance because faarapu is not all, good feet position is also very important in ORI. BTW congratulation to Agnes.

Whatever, your comments are too long to read. Waste of time. Leave me alone.

Kumu Agnes also does hula really well too.
she does a whole bunch of national stuff. she was in a bank of america commercial representing hawaii & she was gonna be in the T.I. video that he did here in hawaii too, but she didnt & there's a HILARIOUS story behind that. so yea.
much alofa Kumu Agnes.
