Next time the Met auditions come around, play this video first before you listen, and then see if there is any among the young tenors that can hold a candle to Mario at 23. Since his death I have been searching for one, just one, who can "sort of" replace him. I must resign myself that there will never be one that can thrill me like he does. There are a few that I like, but definitely no match!
i am great lover of mario lanza and will take any opportunity to showcase and defend his singular and unequalled talent. i offer only my trained ear in the instant case to propose that this performance is NOT part of his 1958 appearance in london. the piano introductions alone are clearly different in tempo from the very first measure. having stated this, i have nothing to offer regarding the origin of this recording. it certainly does not sound like the voice of a 23 year-old.
Witch Ann Cappelletti, the sorceror of So. Philadelphia, 1/2 sister of Barbara Bush, witch daughters of Aleister Crowley, killed Mario's wife with a voodoo doll. No doubt she killed Mario because she wanted him and he didn't want her. I will post more when I learn it.
This is not the recording from the Albert Hall London 1958. However, I too am surprised that it's Lanza at 23 and am not entirely convinced. Someone, I am sure, must know.
This recording seems far too rich and dark to be Mario at only 23. It sounds like Mario from the Live from London album except that I don't hear the applause. It's obviously Mario, but I don't think its Mario at 23. Someone's playing a trick or has got the wrong tape!
As you write on the side 'the inimitable Lanza sound is already very much in place here" that's exactly right. And what a magic sound it is too, even in this early recording you just cannot help it, you simply will have to give it all your attention and silently listen until his last note religiously.
The only thing is, I wonder why he pronounced "Discoglea dai veli" as "DiscogleaBA dai veli." A bit strange, he did it at the Bowl concert in 47 too. Otherwise great.
My love for opera really started with Lanza but now of course I like many others not just Mario he brought opera to the public. I knew Damon and Marc and the two girls and enjoyed many great meals at his Parents house in Pacific Palisades many years ago.
Especially given Lanza's youth, this is impressive. But I believe he improved a quite a bit over the next few years. I think some of his later recordings show a greater facility with the passagio and freer high notes. But good Lord, anybody hearing this back then who knew the singer's age would have to gasp at his native gift and overwhelming potential --
i agree, though I think you can also hear a lot of the caruso influence here that he probably worked away from when he really improved his technique. The power though is completely of his own here.
Oh, I agree. Not surprising that a very young Italian-American tenor should feel and reflect Caruso's influence. But I agree as well that Lanza "worked away from that" over the years. And his voice at 23, with such exceptional power AND such a charismatic, individual sound (many singers have had the power without the latter) was amazing.
I saw his eldest son Damon some years ago on a meeting of the Dutch Mario Lanza Society in Amsterdam. He spoke very proud about his father. He must be still very young.
I admire Mario Lanza in his american songs and parts of american musicals. Not so much in opera. There are so many operasingers that could do better. But he brought opera thight to the people. He won a broad public. In this fact he is unique !
Mario was dreamy, voice and all, so under appreciated by Hollywood. The Italians saw the talent, apparently Queen Elizabeth II adored his music. I'm sorry for Damon, too, what a shame!!!!
And the stars were shining, and the earth smelled sweet, the garden gate scraped, and a step brushed the sand. She came in, fragrant, and fell into my arms. Oh! sweet kisses, oh! languid caresses, while I, trembling, released her lovely features from their veils! My dream of love has vanished forever. The moment is gone, and I die in despair! And I never have loved life so much!
Another preciousness! His unique voice again and this time even younger imagine at only 23!(ShawDaman I just left you a message respecting the rarity you posted that's why I'm saying 'another' now) Thank you for this marvel Khankonchac

Mario also had personal magnetism or charisma.

In this very early age, he was already just magic!!

ShawDAMAN - Lanza sings "DiscioglieVA dai veli"...many tenors do this. It's simply a slightly different tense of the verb.

@warnie1 - Actually he sings DiscioglieVOH dai veli'' here.

Thanks so much for this!
I heard about Damon's passing a couple weeks ago. Very sad.
There are so many recordings of Lanza that the general public is largely unaware of. It's a shame more of them aren't readily available.
