they're definately not. #1 you can't hear the mc's over the beat often. #2 you can't act out your punchlines the same when you have a mic in one hand the whole time #3 you have to pace your verse to the same tempo as the beat even though your natural tempo might be different from the beat to express your words. when battles are acapella it helps to contrast your style from your opponents because a lot of subtleties in timbre, delivery and style are lost when you have to conform to a beat.
