While it is rumored that the role took his toll on him psychologically, no one knows for certain. It is certain though that he suffered from insomnia and other medical issues, so to speak. The thing you have to realize though is that there are two different kinds of actors. There are technical actors who can switch in and out of character within seconds, and then there are method actors who 'become" their character in order to give a better performance.

What I've heard is that quite a few method actors have personal therapists in order to help them get through the transition of becoming the character and afterward to become oneself again. Something I noticed is that a lot of actors nowadays like to mix elements from the two (which makes sense to me). I myself prefer technical as opposed to method, but I do indulge in it here and there whenever I feel it could be of some help. I just realized I sound like I'm talking about a drug. Lol.
