The Gamecocks are named for Thomas Sumter who was named the "Carolina Fighting Gamecock" because his house was burned and he "went on a RAMPAGE of killing British soldiers." (Emphasis is mine.) He (along with Francis Marion) were the inspiration for Benjamin Martin from the Patriot.
