No disrespect, but i learned to first make sure his back is to me. then on his knees legs crossed, lean foward, palms up, and I shake his hand normally while I put on the cuffs. Thats just how I was taught. Im sure both ways are just as effective.
ever have someone freak out from being handcuffed? I suffered a childhood trauma that makes even the thought of being restrained cause anxiety(which is why I keep my butt on the right side of the law).LOL
I am a retired law enforcement officer (32 years). i currently train police and have done so since 1986. These are the worst handcuffing techniques i ever saw.
@Ronontheledge Are you really? Your site is barren,so it looks as if you just opened a youtube site to commit. Second, these are ok moves in handcuffing a suspect. If you train officers please tell us what flaws were committed by the officer and which scenerio?
@Ronontheledge really? having had to use cuffs in my job as a doorman, and having had instruction from police and other parties on how to use handcuffs, this method we are shown is good, effective, and with practice: fast. so yes, please do explain.
Handcuffing is a form of restraint and not a control method. Control should be gained first , ideally 'GVC' gain voluntary compliance. Always bottom cuff to 'gods notch' area of wrist then opposite wrist. Never let go of a handcuff once applied to a suspect with a cuff on his wrist is very dangerous causes some of the worse cuts to a face. If you do let go back off, go to spray. It is only needed to get the first click on the first cuff then apply the next. Then conduct 'cad' drill check
sometimes ago i learn a similar technique to your second handscuffing, after controlling with elbow i catch the other arm to complete the handcuff lock.
There is no control hold prior to loading his cuffs or while he is handcuffing the subject. There is a reason that we do not handcuff like this and it is because you can be injured or killed. This video should be removed before someone adopts this as their handcuffing style and gets seriously hurt.
I'll have to try it. i was taught the PPCT method. Where suspect is bent over, arms out and behind, thumbs up. You go in and cuff with the top cuff, reach over , shake other hand and then cuff second hand with bottom cuff. Cuffing the second hand with the bottom cuff always seemed awkward.
@2517ds except they are heavier. Which isn't much of a downside. I think the chain links would allow you a little bit more flexibility in getting the second cuff on, need to be a bit more exact with rigid style cuffs. Though you're right, rigid cuffs are much, much better. In my experience they don't kick off when you say "you're under arrest" but when you put that first cuff on. Thats when rigid cuffs come into their own, you can get the suspect on the floor very easily. Even if they're high.
i go to a vo tech school for public safety...and this isnt how we do it. when were not against the wall, we have theyre hands on their head. tell them to lace their fingers together, grip their fingers tight, and then grab hands and do it one by one...if he tries to attack, we grip the hands more, which grabs the hair. if they dont have hair, it crushes their fingers and hurts them so they drop and co-operate with u.
@civicman241 - You'll find that there are countless approaches to handcuffing. A lot of it is personal preference. You'll need to try several methods out for various scenarios (nature of call, suspect size/disposition, whether or not you have a partner, etc). Eventually, you'll find what works for you.
if the arresting officer is alone during the arrest would it be more to the advantage of the officer to arrest the suspect while in the prone position to limit the suspect mobility?, it seems that by allowing the suspect to remain standing there is a larger opportunity for the suspect to enter into combat with the officer, possibly before the first arm is cuffed, obviously the degree of safety would be higher if there was another officer present, but this question was meant for a single officer.
i am not a cop, but i am going to polaris for criminal justice. i would like to be a cop in my future. Wouldn't you want full control over the suspect before you handcuff him?
Handcuffs consist of 2 rotating arms or bars for each wrist. One side has a double bar, which allows the other side with the single bar to swing through and around in a circle on a hinge. When you push the single bar against the suspect's wrist, it pushes through and swings back around locking in place. You then adjust the tightness. You can get more info from wikipedia that might help you understand them.
I don't understand how they push down with the handcuffs closed, and then they're suddenly around the wrist. Does that have something to do with how they're made?
I've never understood how that happens. Could you please tell me?
At the point that resistance begins, you would need to transition to a higher level of force. This technique allows you the window of opportunity to transition while minimizing your risks. It is not perfect (nothing is), but it is very useful to those of us who arrest a lot of people.
In this particular video, there is no fight. This is not a known high-risk offender. This is a routine arrest situation (like Public Intoxication, misdemeanor warrant, etc.). Control is established through verbal commands and the empty-hand control of handcuffing itself.
You ended your comment with "This is just constructive criticism" but you offered nothing contructive. If you are actually a police officer, then please share your secret on how you secure every prisoner who is not actively resisting, that is reasonable and appropriate for use on everyone you arrest.
This particular technique is very low-profile and can be used on a daily basis. You say not to take out your cuffs until after a suspect is under control. If they are complying with all of your orders, are they under control? Do you slam grandma and put your knee in her back first? Of course not. You keep your guard up, but begin the cuffing process. If things suddenly escalate then you can counter from this technique.
Most officers are trained to cuff based on the PPCT system which includes ordering the suspect into an unnatural position. In 16 years of police work, I have never seen it actually done on the street because it is not realistic. That leaves a void in our tool box. Officers need a technique that they can actually employ.
When you attempt to handcuff someone who is resisting, this technique would not be appropriate. I would place the subject on the ground and handcuff him from a more secure position. However, when you are placing handcuffs on a person who is not currently resisting (which is the vast majority) you need a low-profile technique that you can use in a wide range of situations.
Horrible! Do not take out your cuffs until AFTER you have gained control. You had absolutely no control over the suspect and if he wanted to, he would of put you on your ass. Just constructive criticism.
Good job

In the UK we have rigid cuff's. Much better in every way. Chain link cuff's and ancient. Buy rigid!
