At ten years of age living in Phila, I went into the street we lived although I was told not to, My father seeing me, "disciplined" me with his hand on my back side for this. The temporary pain seemed harsh, but I learned he was serious in his warning for his own reasons. Later I realized had he not disciplined me to learn to obey him even though I may not have understood at the time, I could have been hit by a car or tractor trailer and in all likelihood the consequences would have been fatal.
Why would a parent need to "discipline" a child so they can learn that actions have consequences? If they took the action, the consequences should be readily and naturally apparent.
Punishments, for sure, do not teach consequences, they teach obedience via coercion and control.

@LibertySteve
some things result in consequences that we can not recover from. they do not serve to teach, but rather to damage or destroy.
