Our desire in the western word is "Quick" techniques, how to brutalize an opponent. O'Sensei was about finding harmony with all things in life, even against agression. If an enemy attacks, it is not the Uke that harms them, it is their own aggression, their own power used against itself. O'Sensei embodied the true sense of Budo and the Way of the Samurai in his teachings. I would imagine many that have posted negatively here, are not at harmony within themselves, much less the world around them.
Aikido is loosely translated, "The Way of Harmony with the Spirit of the Universe". For those who have not studied Aikido, nor the life of O'Sensei, yet wish to leave messages of how Aikido in not really for self defense, are those who have limited themselves in understanding fully the principles of Aikido. Aikido is defensive in nature. It is not only mastering the physical, but also learning to harness the Ki of oneself. Much the western mind cannot wrap around it. We are to "physical" minded.
@darkdrake13 Yeah.. I guessed that much as well. You meant both of us? If you can read my comments, you're in my world as well. Oh.. my brother... my long lost sad world brother. Come, give me a hug.

@BluePittbull666 In aikido there is no winner or loser. It's a way to retain harmony. If you so mauch like breaking bones or something. Moreover, any martial art is a lot more than fighting, especially aikido.
A Life in Aikido: The Biography of Founder Morihei Ueshiba -this is the official biography straight from his son. O sensei many times thrroughout his life would say "For people to truly understand Aikido they would need to know my life story." I've just started reading this book at Barnes and Noble. It is pertinent for one to read-It not only dispels the doubt his skills were staged but is a requirement for any interested in aikido.
@packoftwenty Mifune practiced Judo, right? Well O'Sensei would surely have started using armlocks instead of trying to throw him, which means that Mifune would've had 2 broken wrists at the end of the day...
@packoftwenty Kano sensei actually attended an aikido seminar and upon seeing O'sensei's demonstration, said, "This is the true Judo!" A mutual student of both Ueshiba and Kano, Yoshio Sugino, was quoted as having said this. In fact, the Goshin no Jutsu Kata practiced in Judo was developed by Kenji Tomiki, another big time Judoka and Aikidoka. Tomiki went on to found his own style of Aikido. Why there is such rivalry between styles I've never understood. Kano and Ueshiba respected eachother.
@blacksashman You are incorrect, we dont worship O'sensei, we charish his teachings. You insulting him and saying that aikido is some kind of cult pisses me off. If anythings a cult its MMA, people betting on the outcome of the fight is silly and juevinile, its a sport that lacks grace and true beauty, unlike aikido.
At 2:28 O'Sensei's gi is overlapped the wrong way. Some of this video has been ran with the wrong side facing the reader. There is absolutely no possible way he would have actually put his gi on wrong.
When you think of Aikido, & it's related systems/techniques, it is a good idea to keep that in mind, and understand what's actually going on, instead of just assuming its lack of worth because their is indeed great cooperation going on amongst the participants.
Anyone who claims Aikido, AikiJujutsu, Hapkido related styles/techniques are worthless, clearly doesn't get the philosophy behind the training. Think of it more like if you have a vehicle that can go up to 120mph according to what you see when you look at your dash, you don't drive that fast obviously, for the safety of the folks around as well as yourself, & also as well as because it's against the law to do so. Practicing Aikido you get a better equilibrium and reflects... and as people says.. there's a very particular aspect of Aikido.. is that Aikido choose the person, not the person to Aikido.. i agree this is not for everyone.
Historic footage. Unfortunately the soundtrack is overblown and distracting. The ability to add sound in editing software is the most poorly understood feature of any application.
aikido isnt about "manipulating" energy its about blending with it. if anyone told you something different there full of crap. i admit that some of the stuff looks like there going with it and ive practiced witha few practitioners that do but if you were to experience aikido that O sensei meant it to be you would think other wise. regardless what you say or heard aikido IS a martial art just like any other if done correctly you could seriously injure or kill someone (its happened).
Aikido teaching is based on harmony/Ki/chi (Ai-KI-do) which is nonsense and only exists in their delusional minds. Therefore, to prove the effectiveness of Aikido, either Ki has to be proved under scientific conditions or the combat (martial) techniques have to be proved effective.
Just test your skills with a real martial artist (a different aggressive style) and find out for yourself.
Or, you can choose to believe whatever your Aikido Master tells you without proof. It's your call.
Citizen - sorry to see such sadness in your words - that you feel you must strike out against something of which you have very little experience, apparently.
Aikido HAS been used with those of other martial arts - and it is very effective. No proof? Sorry - I was in Judo for quite a few years before "transferring" to Aikido - it works.
I hope you learn to enjoy life instead of just attempting to find fault in what you do not know.
for those that are skeptical about wheather or not aikido does or does not work all i have to say is dont judge a book by its cover. i have to admit that after 7 yrs of training in aikido that i too still look at some of the techniques and question there effectiveness until i get up and experience it for my self. so before you judge any system or style i suggest that you participate ( if aloud) before you judge just cause it looks like there going along with it doesnt mean that they are.
the problem comes from the students themselves, and not from the martial art. it is very very hard for you to understand something if you havent tried it . in fact it is not enough to try something to give your opinion for it . believe me , look at the movements of the karate champions of kyokushin , cant you see it is obvious!. they are really using aikido principles. VALERI DIMITROV
hello, i train kyokushinkai for years, i also train aikido for years . they are insepperable, infact to get a brown belt in kyokushinkai you MUST know how to do 8 of the basic locks and movements of aikido. in fact if you want black belt in aikido you MUST perform the basic atemi waza of karate!.
really it that what you think , I know a person who got into a "real fight " in which the guy almost died from severe head trama, from being slamed by the akidioka
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Aikido is a false martial art! This is more like dancing or choreography. In a real situation nobody is going to be running around you to "hold your hand". There will be very fast and powerful blows without the fake over-commitment. I would like to see an Aikido black belt go against a real martial artist from a more aggressive style. In the real world an Aikido practitioner would be badly beaten up, bleeding, crippled or even dead if a real fighter were to teach him a lesson.
Don't knock it until you've tried it. Aikido is about avoiding conflict not getting into it. If you knew anything about the founder, Ueshiba O'Sensei, you might think twice before assaulting Aikido. I've watched MMA fighters brutalize each other and still think they could have benefited from some Aikido techniques.
Aikido techniques are useless because they rely on the opponent to over commit or run around you to "hold your hand". Sorry, no personal offense intended but this is simply nonsense, unrealistic and will get you hurt real bad when those techniques fail you in a serious physical conflict.
First, Ueshiba O'Sensei was trained in other martial arts before he founded Aikido.
Second, he can only pick on his poor students who don't realize he is a fraud but he never was able to take on an outsider.
CitizensOfUtube - You said "Aikido techniques are useless because they rely on the opponent to over commit or run around you to 'hold your hand'." Do you mean to tell me that when you strike someone you don't commit to it? How do you generate power? When you grab someone don't you hold on? How do you disarm an attacker with a weapon? Do you grab them or the weapon? I don't know about you but I get the "willies" when I shake a guy's hand and they barely have a grip. Does this describe you?
When I strike, I do not over commit. That is, I do not hyper-extend or lock my joint. Force is generated from the acceleration. (scientifically: F=m*a) and body movement delivering the strike. My attacks are also deceptive and very fast you will not see it coming.
If someone grabs you, it is usually a very quick pull followed by a punch. Nobody is going to run around you to hold your hand. Try sparring with a real martial artist and you will very quickly learn the hard way.
Now that you mention it, Aikido is derived from religious superstitions like the false believe that you can manipulate energy: Ki/ chi.
Check out "Martial Arts Bullshido (No-Touch Knockouts) Part 1 of 8" on Youtube. You will see the fake nonsense in action!
CitizenofUtube - now I understand where you come from. I love your response! If you feel the urge to put your theories into practice please write to me privately so we can arrange to meet and I can see those deceptively fast attacks. Oh wait! I won't be able to see it will I?
bushin64, you don't need to watch me demonstrate a punch or deceptive attacks. Just visit a real martial arts or military hand to hand training training school and I'm sure they will be delighted to show you how useless Aikido techniques are. Having said that, I also realize that many other schools, regardless of style, are fake, only a commercialized "Macdojo", taking your money and teaching nonsense.
CitizenOfUtube. You think you're the only one who takes this stuff seriously? I train with local law enforcement officers in town. The local SWAT trainer trains with us. A former SEAL team operative and a former army Spec Op trained with us until they had to move. I go to VA to train with a buddy of mine who is currently a trainer with the Secret Service. I've gone to Ft. Bragg to assist a friend of mine, another former Secret Service Agent, train the guys up there. Tell me about yourself
"A former SEAL team operative and a former army Spec Op trained with us until they had to move."
I trained in many schools too, until I had to "move". Yes, that's the politically correct excuse I tell them when I later realize that they are just another "MacDojo".
CitizenOfUtube - I have come to really like you. Thanks for your conversation. I would like for you to come by our MacDojo. If you think you can handle it. Contact me privately for an address
bushin64, thanks for the offer. I might actually take up your offer in the summer when I have time to travel.
However, I'm not the one making extraordinary claims or unscientific mumbo jumbo. I only use proven and effective techniques (no Ki supernatural nonsense) So I'm not the one who needs to prove anything.
On the other hand, it's you (and other Aikido practitioners) who needs to prove your skills to YOURSELVES, not to me or anyone else. I already proved my skills to myself on the streets and in military conditions.
I'm only helping you people open your eyes to the FACTS.
1- Aikido has never worked in real life combat
2- Ki is only a religious supernatural myth (in any style)
3- Many "black belts/masters" (MacDojo loyalists) have lost to street punks.
So you don't believe Gozo shioda used it to save his life when faced in a 3 against 2 situation?
Aikido isn't for fighting and that was Ueshiba who said that in a much grander way. Aikidos reputation would only be hurt by someone trying to fight for it because he would have lost his aiki regardless of the fight.
Yes there are Aiki bunnies out there but i doubt the style would have got as far as it has without some credibillity!
Citizen, I hope you don't assume all Aikido is represented by this video and comments. There are other styles that are based in reality. These styles are labeled "barbaric" by the non-martial wing of Aikido.
As far as Ki, my understanding is it's basically "kinetic" meaning it moves without stopping.
I don't believe in masters-anyone who calls himself a "master" will always lose.
Aikido has worked twice for me in real-life attacks. I also know of others.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
However, if you are really serious about your challenge, just post it in any Martial arts magazine or publication and I'm very sure many local and REAL martial artists will accept your challenge. Of course, it would also be publicly recorded and published and we all can see it. Only then Aikido can redeem its reputation and put an end to the allegations that it is fake.
why don't you take this penis-measuring someplace else. aikido is interesting for those who like it. who cares if you don't think it's good enough for street fighting.
Your wrong. Aikido is VERY real. You obviously have never trained in it. What you see in videos is only a demonstration of Aikido. You can't show Aikido in it's true form because you would literally cripple the opponents. Trust me. I've seen it happen....
lol. Technically you are right, its is an art created by Morehei Uyeshiba, from a very real art by the name of daito ryu Ju-jutsu, a combative Samurai art used by a man by the name of Musashi Miyamoto, if you don't know who this is then you need to study your history. Aikido, works very well against Drunk people with a full committed attack, but daito ryu works well against all the rest.
Charlatanismo.

CitizenOfUtube 2 years ago

If someone makes a claim, especially an extraordinary claim like the ability to manipulate energy (ki/chi), then the onus is on them to prove it.
Here is an example of some of Martial arts fraud:
George Dillman - National Geographic Channel
(search it on Youtube or append watch?v=lsSzSflkns8&feature=related)
If your "Master" or "Grand Master" claims that Ki exists or he can manipulate it, then ask him to prove it under scientific conditions.

the problem comes from the students themselves, and not from the martial art. it is very very hard for you to understand something if you havent tried it . in fact it is not enough to try something to give your opinion for it . believe me , look at the movements of the karate champions of kyokushin , cant you see it is obvious!. they are really using aikido principles. VALERI DIMITROV
for example

hello, i train kyokushinkai for years, i also train aikido for years . they are insepperable, infact to get a brown belt in kyokushinkai you MUST know how to do 8 of the basic locks and movements of aikido. in fact if you want black belt in aikido you MUST perform the basic atemi waza of karate!.
zeculinar 2 years ago
really it that what you think , I know a person who got into a "real fight " in which the guy almost died from severe head trama, from being slamed by the akidioka

CitizenOfUtube 2 years ago
Don't knock it until you've tried it. Aikido is about avoiding conflict not getting into it. If you knew anything about the founder, Ueshiba O'Sensei, you might think twice before assaulting Aikido. I've watched MMA fighters brutalize each other and still think they could have benefited from some Aikido techniques.
pyewacket97 2 years ago 2
Aikido techniques are useless because they rely on the opponent to over commit or run around you to "hold your hand". Sorry, no personal offense intended but this is simply nonsense, unrealistic and will get you hurt real bad when those techniques fail you in a serious physical conflict.
First, Ueshiba O'Sensei was trained in other martial arts before he founded Aikido.
Second, he can only pick on his poor students who don't realize he is a fraud but he never was able to take on an outsider.
CitizenOfUtube 2 years ago
CitizensOfUtube - You said "Aikido techniques are useless because they rely on the opponent to over commit or run around you to 'hold your hand'." Do you mean to tell me that when you strike someone you don't commit to it? How do you generate power? When you grab someone don't you hold on? How do you disarm an attacker with a weapon? Do you grab them or the weapon? I don't know about you but I get the "willies" when I shake a guy's hand and they barely have a grip. Does this describe you?
bushin64 2 years ago
When I strike, I do not over commit. That is, I do not hyper-extend or lock my joint. Force is generated from the acceleration. (scientifically: F=m*a) and body movement delivering the strike. My attacks are also deceptive and very fast you will not see it coming.
CitizenOfUtube 2 years ago
If someone grabs you, it is usually a very quick pull followed by a punch. Nobody is going to run around you to hold your hand. Try sparring with a real martial artist and you will very quickly learn the hard way.
Now that you mention it, Aikido is derived from religious superstitions like the false believe that you can manipulate energy: Ki/ chi.
Check out "Martial Arts Bullshido (No-Touch Knockouts) Part 1 of 8" on Youtube. You will see the fake nonsense in action!
CitizenOfUtube 2 years ago
CitizenofUtube - now I understand where you come from. I love your response! If you feel the urge to put your theories into practice please write to me privately so we can arrange to meet and I can see those deceptively fast attacks. Oh wait! I won't be able to see it will I?
bushin64 2 years ago
bushin64, you don't need to watch me demonstrate a punch or deceptive attacks. Just visit a real martial arts or military hand to hand training training school and I'm sure they will be delighted to show you how useless Aikido techniques are. Having said that, I also realize that many other schools, regardless of style, are fake, only a commercialized "Macdojo", taking your money and teaching nonsense.
CitizenOfUtube 2 years ago
CitizenOfUtube. You think you're the only one who takes this stuff seriously? I train with local law enforcement officers in town. The local SWAT trainer trains with us. A former SEAL team operative and a former army Spec Op trained with us until they had to move. I go to VA to train with a buddy of mine who is currently a trainer with the Secret Service. I've gone to Ft. Bragg to assist a friend of mine, another former Secret Service Agent, train the guys up there. Tell me about yourself
bushin64 2 years ago
"A former SEAL team operative and a former army Spec Op trained with us until they had to move."
I trained in many schools too, until I had to "move". Yes, that's the politically correct excuse I tell them when I later realize that they are just another "MacDojo".
CitizenOfUtube 2 years ago
CitizenOfUtube - I have come to really like you. Thanks for your conversation. I would like for you to come by our MacDojo. If you think you can handle it. Contact me privately for an address
bushin64 2 years ago
bushin64, thanks for the offer. I might actually take up your offer in the summer when I have time to travel.
However, I'm not the one making extraordinary claims or unscientific mumbo jumbo. I only use proven and effective techniques (no Ki supernatural nonsense) So I'm not the one who needs to prove anything.
CitizenOfUtube 2 years ago
On the other hand, it's you (and other Aikido practitioners) who needs to prove your skills to YOURSELVES, not to me or anyone else. I already proved my skills to myself on the streets and in military conditions.
I'm only helping you people open your eyes to the FACTS.
1- Aikido has never worked in real life combat
2- Ki is only a religious supernatural myth (in any style)
3- Many "black belts/masters" (MacDojo loyalists) have lost to street punks.
CitizenOfUtube 2 years ago
So you don't believe Gozo shioda used it to save his life when faced in a 3 against 2 situation?
Aikido isn't for fighting and that was Ueshiba who said that in a much grander way. Aikidos reputation would only be hurt by someone trying to fight for it because he would have lost his aiki regardless of the fight.
Yes there are Aiki bunnies out there but i doubt the style would have got as far as it has without some credibillity!
stingrae789 2 years ago 3
What about steven seagal??? I bet you cant fight him!!!
GODZILAS15 2 years ago 2
Citizen, I hope you don't assume all Aikido is represented by this video and comments. There are other styles that are based in reality. These styles are labeled "barbaric" by the non-martial wing of Aikido.
As far as Ki, my understanding is it's basically "kinetic" meaning it moves without stopping.
I don't believe in masters-anyone who calls himself a "master" will always lose.
Aikido has worked twice for me in real-life attacks. I also know of others.

@Devoti I tried to tell him but thanks

Your wrong. Aikido is VERY real. You obviously have never trained in it. What you see in videos is only a demonstration of Aikido. You can't show Aikido in it's true form because you would literally cripple the opponents. Trust me. I've seen it happen....

JeffreyJamesLippold 2 years ago

In response to the comment below, I too believe that it is a young Moriteru Ueshiba training with Doshu and 2nd Doshu.
Thanks again for sharing with the world!
