@crabbit87 when you spin you create more momentum and it can also help you to keep your chest up, but in doing so you jepordize balance unless you practice at it
too bad Michael Carter had so much football talent, he might have been number 1 on this list if he kept throwing instead of playing in the NFL, only high school athlete to throw the 12lbs shot over 80 feet!!!!
Jacko Gill, the finest shot putter I've ever seen, he makes Randy Barnes look slow which is saying something! 20.01m at 16 years of age with a 7.26kg. He's aiming for 25m with a 5kg at this years world Youth Games. He's quick and a great young fella. He could be an NBA player, vertical jump of 95cms.
Randy Matson 71'51/2", Al Feuerbach 71'71/4", and Terry Alritton 71'10" all with glide and all Americans before the Oldfield 75' even spin. Oldfield was a great sprinter too. Saw him beat medalist Chi Cheng at 60 meters indoors at exhibition at pro meet. His 75 didn't count for years for he was paid.
Awesome. It's interesting to note that the O'Brian glide with Timmerman is only a few inches behind the Randy Barnes spin mark. Mastery of the Spin us more difficult and harder to be consistent in huge world competitions when medals are at stake.
Beautiful compilation of video. That Adam Nelson is a maniac when he gets pumped up.
actually u can shuv that up ure multiple manginas, cos i represent england for field hockey, i have been selected to do 800m, 1500m, 400m and long jump at the national youth festival, and im getting A's in all my subjects at a very competitive school.
so u cant really talk to me about not having dedication,i have come from not being able to afford a pair of running spikes, to being the best in england.
Would anyone recommend shot put for building explosiveness for boxing and mma?
Im very interested in Ballistic training and Ive recently got into Kettlebell training. I would have thought Shot put with 7.26kg (highest i could find) shot would work great for punching power and explosiveness.
I am built to use the spin, stocky and powerful legs so for this entire season I have been using the spin (college level) and had yet to hit a PR, today I had a meet and switched back to the glide, I beat my PR by a meeter and a half
i am just a freshman in highschool but my opinion i like the spin better because i feel i can get a little more momentum out of it but glide is just as good my spin record is 52".3 and my glide is 50".1
@jswlee i have the technique down and i just started track this year and i love it. if you know the technique that its easy. coach said i know how to do it exactly
@KonradZuse420 Becuase the GDR have a good reputation for not doping too I suppose? No way a short ass Glider goes over 23m without a little "help" and nearly 30 years later, it doesn't happen again.
@KonradZuse420 how do you know that for sure? he might of he might not of probably every shot putter except for maybe 4 shot putters took steroids. but thats like 95 percent so even gliders took steroids. the spin makes you gain 7 feet if you do it right, how do i know well cause i used to be a glider i threw 30 feet (7th grade) then i wanted to spin, so i did, i gained 11 foot 41 feet (7th grade same meet) so spin does help, if you say prove it ill have my videos on face book in about 4-5 days.
@54scubasteve That is not true. I have tried every event except pole vault, but I can say that of the ones I have tried, the triple jump is the most difficult to get down the technique of. However, it may just be different for you, but I would guess that if you tried the triple jump, it would kick your ass.
I'm a senior in high school and I was thinking about doing shotput for the first time because people say I should. Is it hard to get the movement down like should I practice before the season starts?
I'm Gunna be a junior in high school and my best meet throw is 48'7 in a meet but I've thrown a 52'4 and a 43'4 my freshman year. Last year I was 6'4 240 this year I'm about 6'5 260. Check out my videos if you want.
im a junior in high school and im 6'2" and 260lbs and throw the shot 44ft with the glide (got shoulder surgery so couldent train for 6 months and still throw decent)
@Paperpirate456 That's pretty good for your season. I'm also A freshman but I'm 6'2" 240 lbs and I throw within inches of 40'. If you want to hit 45 or higher you need to lift a lot.
@tubkowski The first time I hit 45 was when I was at a meet that didn't measure anything lower. Weightlifting helps, but sometimes you just need to get the momentum flow and weight distribution down perfectly. Everything needs to be violent yet fluid
@MrHav1k At 5'11" you should probably spin, if you have a good coach. Most gliders are tall (Timmerman was 6'6") while spinners are shorter (Hoffa is like 5'11").
it depends! if you are a tall guy, glide would probably work for you. you have to be very fast(explosive) for spin. and years of practice, of course. i don't know how many meters is 5 11. lets keep it simple - if youre fast, switch to spin!
@offlineri Im 6"3 and i threw glide for 6 years and now my High school coach is forcing me to throw spin, Im horrible at it and i cant seem to Convince him that i need to throw glide, any sugestions?
i ussually throw my 16 pounder about 45 feet i only throw 12 for my province but i practice with 16 now. i one gold for the saskatchewan province last year and wih hopefully do it again this year
@throws4life In high school I always practiced with a 8.8 lb (4kg) shot, even though 12 was used in meets. I wanted to be fast, and really that was the only shot I had at home for practicing in the backyard (the holes went away after a few heavy rains)
There is a guy on my track team that throws from 55-60 feet every meet, I knew he was ranked nationally but I never realized that he was THAT good after watching the video. I feel lame now... my PR is only 27.
i suck at field events but im great at sprint and distance. the stupid thing about my track team is that we have to do every event in a meet so if u suck at field like i do u totally bomb a meet for your team :(
@tilepile1 agree im an 8th grader i throw up to 45ft winning 1st place, BUT that is fucking unbielieavable for a 50ft, not unless he takes steroids and fucks himself up
@OzzieLuvr I throw 42 haha but these guys are usin a ball thats 16 pounds i think i use an 8 pound ball in 7th grade an sometimes a 12 ( i get like 34 ft) with that.
@StabxWithxPaste I thought it would be better to say I was a girl instead of getting hustled and assumed as being a boy with people shooting comments like "Whoa, dude, you're weak," and whatnot.
I'm a freshman, season just started, and I'm throwing 32 ft with the 12 lb, I gotta lot of work to do to catch up with the other guy in my previous comment.
@ThePivDude in meets if you ar jv you will just be throwin 10 they just start you with 12 like they did at my skool and dude your season started late bro well how many meets have you done?
@wheresdylsan Well, my season just ended about a week and a half ago, and I've done 12 meets, 2 of them were USATF developmental meets though. I haven't PRed in Shot at all. Yeah, my season was really short, 11 weeks. would've been 12 if I made varsity (I was really close to making it in Disc) and I've been throwing the 12 all season not the 10.
last year one of my schools sophomores threw about a 69-72 ft, I cant remember which, with the 12 lb shot, he's hella good. can't wait to see what he'll be throwing this year.
please people remember this name j rosado in high school this season 59 feet 11 in. gold medals cover my wall look for me in the to go all the way to to top
im an 8th grader this year in track and i throw about 33 feet, but do you get more power if you throw like the way some of these people spin when they throw?
@ULTIMATEsoldier4, it all depends on the person the world records today is still held with the glide but the spin holds the majority of the modern records, you have to do the one you feel comfortable with, fyi 2nd and 3rd at the 08 olimpics were spin but gold was glide
@ULTIMATEsoldier4 well.... it should be obvious bro... these are olympic throwers.. their not using these techniques for no reason bro ... using the spin to throw or the glide clearly is the best way to increase power on ur throw if these guys use it right? yes.
ok i am 14 years old in the 8th grade and i throw shot put in girls track and field. last year i placed 6th,4th,3rd,2nd,and 1st in the meets. my 1st place measurement was 22' 2 1/2". and looking at these measurements that doesnt seem very far. we throw an 8 pound but i think we are supposed to throw six. so my question is would i throw farther with a six pound? and also does anyone have have any advice on how i can throw farther? because the glide doesnt seem to work for me...
@yogurlterra95 i throw for my college and yes you can throw further with a lighter wieght but you have the right wight highschool goes to 12lb and college to 16lb, like anything else the glide takes work and the spin is very difficult to get down
@yogurlterra95 im sorry girls throw six, but explosion work outs, exchaning upper body to lower, then upper explosion and lower explostion, three or four days a week alternation and then work form every day and one or two days a week doing core, back and mait.
When you spin it is much better but in the beginning you are chosen to be either a south African ( the one where you spin) or the glide ( one step )

@StabxWithxPaste I thought it would be better to say I was a girl instead of getting hustled and assumed as being a boy with people shooting comments like "Whoa, dude, you're weak," and whatnot.
elpe1026 1 year ago
I'm a freshman, season just started, and I'm throwing 32 ft with the 12 lb, I gotta lot of work to do to catch up with the other guy in my previous comment.
ThePivDude 1 year ago
@ThePivDude in meets if you ar jv you will just be throwin 10 they just start you with 12 like they did at my skool and dude your season started late bro well how many meets have you done?
wheresdylsan 1 year ago
@wheresdylsan Well, my season just ended about a week and a half ago, and I've done 12 meets, 2 of them were USATF developmental meets though. I haven't PRed in Shot at all. Yeah, my season was really short, 11 weeks. would've been 12 if I made varsity (I was really close to making it in Disc) and I've been throwing the 12 all season not the 10.
ThePivDude 1 year ago
last year one of my schools sophomores threw about a 69-72 ft, I cant remember which, with the 12 lb shot, he's hella good. can't wait to see what he'll be throwing this year.
ThePivDude 1 year ago
I'm hitting middle 30s. Before you guys pounce, let me state that I am a girl. I want to reach almost 40 by the end of this year.

shot put really takes practice man.
i got 1st on my second year of playing shot put and it was hard getting to that point.
throwing a 5 kilo metal ball kills, but it all pays off.
headbanger015 2 years ago
i really suck at this....i think id better run in track then do shotput and throw disks....
freeleighrandom 2 years ago
im an 8th grader this year in track and i throw about 33 feet, but do you get more power if you throw like the way some of these people spin when they throw?
ULTIMATEsoldier4 2 years ago
@ULTIMATEsoldier4, it all depends on the person the world records today is still held with the glide but the spin holds the majority of the modern records, you have to do the one you feel comfortable with, fyi 2nd and 3rd at the 08 olimpics were spin but gold was glide
klig70 1 year ago
@ULTIMATEsoldier4 well.... it should be obvious bro... these are olympic throwers.. their not using these techniques for no reason bro ... using the spin to throw or the glide clearly is the best way to increase power on ur throw if these guys use it right? yes.
MrJerZBoi 1 year ago
ok i am 14 years old in the 8th grade and i throw shot put in girls track and field. last year i placed 6th,4th,3rd,2nd,and 1st in the meets. my 1st place measurement was 22' 2 1/2". and looking at these measurements that doesnt seem very far. we throw an 8 pound but i think we are supposed to throw six. so my question is would i throw farther with a six pound? and also does anyone have have any advice on how i can throw farther? because the glide doesnt seem to work for me...
yogurlterra95 2 years ago
try the spin if the glide doesn't work for you.
cdeavellar1 2 years ago
@yogurlterra95 i throw for my college and yes you can throw further with a lighter wieght but you have the right wight highschool goes to 12lb and college to 16lb, like anything else the glide takes work and the spin is very difficult to get down
klig70 1 year ago
@yogurlterra95 im sorry girls throw six, but explosion work outs, exchaning upper body to lower, then upper explosion and lower explostion, three or four days a week alternation and then work form every day and one or two days a week doing core, back and mait.
klig70 1 year ago
shotput is all about concentration and strength.u just need to focus an push yaself to throw the ball farr!!.
