  • My respects go out to the late Gary Moore and Phil Lynott, one of the best rock bands from Ireland, their music will never die...

  • Sorry for cursin' mother! Love it. \m/ \m/

  • esta banda era la cumbia

  • Phil, Phil, Phil... he knows it all so well.

My favorite Lizzy song. Thanks for putting this up.

  • <3 with love in Phil's memory...

  • Phil has split

  • I actually love the keyboards in this song.Pretty much a perfect song :)

  • great song, shit now

  • And can now see how much he was under the influence of heroin while performing, he justs looks so bad...:(, I really hate heroin for taking him away from us he had so much potential, im just glad his music lives in and I can pass on to my children, thanks for the music.

  • @TheMaka456

    He looked fine.

  • Im 27 and grew up listening through my parents thin lizzy, at the time I never really took an interest and was none the wiser, it was only until I reached 27 and started listening to the music my parents listened to I can now see why!, maybe its because music sucks today and this is real music?, I LOVE thin lizzy, this song in particular has a lot of sadness about it because it was the last song I listened to before researching phils death...continued

  • @TheMaka456 - Do yourself a favor. Play "Spirit Slips Away" from the Fighting album at a medium volume in your IPod going around in town.. when it's totally dark. You'll thank me later =)

  • @TheMaka456 i totally agree

  • yeheaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • J'écoute Thin Lizzy depuis 1979 et c'est toujours génial.Malheureusement Phil n'est plus de ce monde.

  • Sadly enough the sun did go down on Phil Lynott and Gary Moore.. but as long as I'm around I'll try and keep it shining on their legacy.

  • its very good

  • He wrote this about his addiction to Heroin...!! Muppets ! Have some respect for his honesty...he was well past saving at this point...but I loved him !

  • .........best ever,thanks

  • love this song love this band the tour they were on then i saw them in bradford it was my first ever concert what a great start. the only thing i never liked about lizzy is wharton and that annoying keyboard i'd like to break it over his head.

  • I photographed Thin Lizzy in 77 when they opened for Queen. To see the shots go to 70srockphotos (.com)

  • phil lynott at the start-NO ITS NOT WHISKY IN A FUCKIN JAR .

  • THE ONLY THING I LIKE BETTER THAN SEX LISTENING TO THE LZZY THIN LIZZY.......

  • beautifull solo mr. Scott Gorham RESPECT

    rip PL...

  • Gods no doubt, easily one of my top 5 favorite Lizzy tracks, and Gorham is f*cking brilliant, his solos are so well written and played, SO much more sole than Sykes, bloody phenomenal band though, they will always be one of my favorite bands and top influences with my own music, LONG LIVE THIN LIZZY!!!

  • fucking awsome!!!.. too bad many people dont even know Thiun lizzy nowadays... the essence of music indeed.

  • <3

  • the sun goes down way to soon on all of our great frontman long live phil and his words to us!

  • everytime I hear this song... Phil's singing voice communicates that his drug problem had reached a point of no return and that he would be dead soon, but that the fans should should take solace in the fact his music will live on. And when I hear "the sun goes down" it basically says to me an era of music is ending... that era being Phil Lynott's. I have a feeling he knew Thunder and Lightning would be Lizzy's last recording...

  • Best band ever!

  • One of the many great songs that shows the depth of Thin Lizzy. Powerful, NOT heavy, dark, thoughtful, meaningful. Love it. Too bad the album versions of the Thunder and Lightning songs were mixed so badly. But the live versions show how great it was...

  • thin lizzy rules..........

  • This song is a masterpiece. Huge atmosphere, huge emotion...And welcome all drummers around the world to try capture this pulsating excellence by Brian Downey...

  • @Sabbathman1979

    Excellent observation

  • a was there.................

  • still miss him

  • My 15 year son thinks Lizzy blows away the current band of popsters. They were truly great and I hope Phil gets the recognition he deserves in music history, I last saw him in Grand Slam in 1984 at the London School of Economics; there were only a couple of hundred people there. But something not to be forgotten. Fantastic talent.

  • U2 sucks shit, its a crappy commercial band for women... dont compare real bands like Thin Lizzy with a girlie band like U2

  • @fIRsTRATmAN Amen to that!

  • Sykes and Gorham, Epic!

  • This song is indeed very meaningful. A few months ago, I found out some things that deeply hurt me and this song just played over and over in my head. Made everything better. Apparently other people have had similar stories & found themselves relating to this song.

Anyways, great song. I mostly like 70s Thin Lizzy, but this is definitely in my top 10 Lizzy songs.

  • I like Sykes but Gorham is my favorite!!

  • "oh it's not whiskey in the fck'n jar" Haha brilliant!

  • Sung with feeling while fighting those inner demons. Lucky enough to see them in 1979 and that memory will never fade, i have never stopped listening and never will. I just can understand how so many say they were under rated, the Lizzy name lives on, even my teenage daughter and her mates have them on their Ipods. Just wish Grand Slam took off for Phil, check out some of those live tracks folks they were bloody good, long live the Lizzy name.

  • This rocks! Thanks for sharing it on youtube!

    Keep on rocking! :)

    /watch?v=MAF-iUNRhN0&feature=channel_video_title

  • I always thought this song had a special edge to it...

  • I miss you Philip Parris Lynott!! This is one of my favorite songs!!

  • The man made a bass sound 8 Foot Tall !!!!!!!!!!!! RIP M8 & thanks for the Inspiration

  • HE WAS DEAD JUST OVER 2 YEARS LATER

  • The John Sykes complimented this song. A pure classic tune, will stand the test of time...

  • @cfwbdude Yea, no disrespect to Gorham who was a good guitarist, but Sykes was and is better.

  • I love this song and i Miss This Man Everyday!I am Captivated By His Spell!!!!How could you not be!!!!!Love him forever!!!!! I just hate to watch this because he looks so bad and it brakes my heart to see him like this!Still In Love With You Phil Lynott

    Forever!!!!!!!xxxxxx<3

  • @sassy3121 ye i agree i just watched an earlier video and i cant believe the change such a pity!!

  • I love this tune!! Phil doesn't look good in this video.

  • I love this tune!!

  • U2 may be a top band by 1990's standards, but if there hadn't been Lizzy, we'd never have seen U2 grow to any prominence whatsoever. Lizzy paved the way for any other Irish band to really go out and get noticed by the world.

  • Probably the most underrated band I've heard in a while. These guys just ROCK SO HARD.

  • Comment removed

  • U2? not fit to be compared to lizzy.

  • well i hope you have a great night and paul does some queen songs

  • I do not want to remember him looking this way...

  • MAGIC

  • MAGIC

  • MAGNIFICENT!

  • kõige ilusam lugu !!!!

  • Philo, lovely that that an Irish guy can still apologise to his ma!!! Love you man.....cannot wait to see you preforming at the big gig in the sky!!

  • Má super zabarvený hlas.

  • Man this is great, This is an underrated line up for Thin Lizzy. Yet this is a line up that I come back to again and again.

  • THIS IS PROPER MUSIC!!!

TODAYS MUSIC IS SHIT N UNLISTENABLE MAKES ME SICK

    JOHN N SCOTT GREAT SOLOS

    R.I.P PHIL

  • i fucking love this......how i wish phil was still alive...

  • Thin Lizzy....best band to come out of Ireland. The beautiful guitar playing so amazing....Listen to their songs so much....Lucky to see them live in Hammersmith odeon in London in the 70s.Phil Lynott never forgotten he was the greatest rocker his beautiful irish voice....such Happy memories he was so brilliant live on stage and his passion for music lives on forever in his beautiful songs.Happy St Patricks day to Thin Lizzy.Great video and most gorgeous song...one of my favourite songs ever.

  • thin lizzy lives no matter what happened, or will happen... i am Greek from Athens, i know that Ireland have big problems too.. but "we will be strong" !!!! Thank you Ireland

  • Best "live" version of this "Deep meaningful song" We get two superb solo's from Scott

& John here??? John's solo is not on the album version? I wish it was because it would have made a Great song even better!!!!!

  • U2 are bollox ....Thin lizzy were savage and always will be..iontach ;)

  • Some people say phls voice had gone by this show.. I cant see it myself.. The big man still sounds awesome to me.. god bless ya m8.

  • hate that when the fookers al want whiskey in the jar!!!! peasents

  • A true great classic song riff.

  • @cfwbdude me and u bro awsome

  • Awesome says it all.....

  • Love this song and Thin Lizzy.

  • WOW!!!...great band.....lots of feeling. TL is new to me.....WHO IS PLAYING THE SUNBURST LES PAUL???

  • @MrCannone1 Scott Gorham

  • WOW!!! Great BAND....lots of feeling.....just now started to listen to TL....WHO IS PLAYING THE SUNBURST LES PAUL???

  • @MrCannone1 Scott Gorham. Joined early 70's.

  • Well said, sadlly missed.

  • I saw them at Reading 1983 - it was billed as their last gig; for some reason I found that hard to believe, but it probably was.

  • All those reefers that I smoked when listening to this and now I haven t had one for 4 years and for god sake how old have I become?

  • LIZZY AT DOWNLOAD. GOT TO BE WORTH A WATCH, IF ONLY FOR THE GUITARWORK-YOU CAN SPIN THE WORDS IN YOUR HEAD. JUST IMAGINE IT'S PHIL

  • great song!!

    I love Thin Lizzy

I wish Phil was still with us but...the sun went down..

  • Great song but I can't help feeling a bit sad watching this video. Phil left us all way too soon.

  • 30 years gone phil but you still live in your music

  • I saw them at sheffield city hall on their Thunder and lightening tour in 1983. They were my top band and i`ve still got about 6-7 albums on vinyl, i must get a turn table.

  • I saw them at Newcastle City Hall 1976 (or was it '77?) they were spectacular.

I was deaf with a ringing in my ears for 3 days. They were only matched by

QUEEN a decade later at St James' Park August 1986. I wish I had both concerts in a Genie bottle to keep forever to get out and re-live and enjoy over and over again ... ?

  • @notrut queen out there on there own not a band ever as good as queen live saw them in 82,84,86 and the last in 86 was out this world but lizzy in 83 was the only band to come close to queen they was way before there time great singer great songs im just glad i saw them both lizzy r and always will b one of the best band of all time and much much better than that shit u2 not in the same class as lizzy

  • @QueenMMTD Thanks for feedback QueenMMTD, I'm off to see Paul Rodgers at Newcastle Arena tomorrow night, hope he is up to his Free, Bad Company era and dare I say it, his Queen stand-in period?!?

  • @notrut there's probablly bootleg's from those shows, so if you download them then you can re-live your history in some way :)

  • @Alithecomedian Hi Al, thanks for your concern and suggestion, you clearly appreciate what I mean.

My Queen DVDs are excellent but nothing will capture the atmosphere of that Lizzy concert. I recently

blasted up the M6 from dropping off a Pilot at Blackpool Airport - Yes, there was only one CD for such

a thrash up the road at 3am, on empty roads, watching for the rozzers, Live & Dangerous, V Loud.

  • @notrut me too, plus every yr Lizzy played City Hall and also Queen '79,fantastic gigs

  • Lol- No it's not Whiskey in the fucking Jar

  • @MitchRaf oh and sorry for cursin' mother

  • jep, fucked up . . . born to late!

  • There is new music that is good but I can ASSURE you that very few get to write and produce on their own, almost every band these days hire a producer that basically writes their songs. I have been in this business for 15 years now...there are very few bands that are allowed to make their own material. The label pays and expect a return therefore they decide what songs go out. It is all an act. Even Metallica did this with Enter Sandman...nothing wrong with it, on the contrary...

  • 25 years in the orphanage.

    R.I.P. Phil Lynott 20.08.1949-04.01.1986

  • I have this record on LP and I played countless times. How many CDs have you bought recently and listened for more than 10 times?

It was authentic back in the days because the bands got to choose most of what material to play. Nothing like playing your own music...

  • @thesinfulnature Actually there are quite a few cds I listen to more than 10 times a day. "I am not a human being" by Lil Wayne...."The Final Frontier"-Iron Maiden...I watch the Rock In Rio dvd every morning when I wake up to get my day started off right.....listen Thin Lizzy was amazing it's a shame I will never get to see them live, But to insult recent music is ignorant and close minded. There are several recent/newer bands that make amazing music and have amazing live shows. Open your ears.

  • Comment removed

  • @mattisgod1234 i totally agree with your comment but i would think there wouldn't be many of the amazing newer live band who would be looked back on in 30 yrs with as much fondness as Phil and the boys .

  • I saw them in Denmark, same year (I think). They, and speciel Phil are still the greatest. Thank you for sharing this.

  • great song, one of lizzys finest. Best place to listen to this is outside when the sun goes down, hopefully with some cloulds. I swear i can feel Phil's presence and get goose bumps. Sometimes it so god dam beautiful, i want to cry for Phil, his family, and all of his fans. He might me gone, but he will never be forgotten.

  • One of my favorite songs. Love it. Missing Phil

  • gf

  • 'I've got ride, ride like the wind, to be free again..'

  • gabmc1966....I am with you my Irish friend...I am from San Francisco and Phil will never be forgotten on the banks of our glorious bay. Phil was Thin Lizzy and no one can deny those words. No one that ever saw the band can deny his talent and grace!! Rest in Peace Phil...you will never be forgotten only missed.

  • What a composed performance, having Thin Lizzy to see in my teens kinda set the standard, we had nothing but we had pure gold.... I see alot of comments sayin' nothing like this music now, well, i say get your guitars out and play. RIP Philo.

  • I can feel the pain when Phil sings. super song, great guitar playing

  • A band that deserved more acknowledgement... but those that know Thin Lizzy's epicness are the very few that now what real music is!

  • My all time fave song. solo of Gary Moore Is grand, but hands up to J Sykes doing his poseur solo Is legendary with Impressive vocals of the late Lizzy.

  • I feel sad that I didn't fully understand how very, very talented this group of young men were. Funny.... it makes me feel cheated in a way, even though it is I who am at fault for not regognizing the depth of their talent and looking past the "radio hits." Dang.

  • I grew up riding around in my Dad's vette listening to Thin Lizzy. I have always liked their music a lot. But... recently, for unexplained reasons, I have been compelled to search them out and get past "Boys are Back In town" or "Jailbreak" etc... I still love those songs, but when I stumbled across "The Sun Goes Down" I was taken aback. This is one of the most meaningful, emotionally charged songs I have ever heard and I am a self proclaimed music afficianado.

  • It's really goes down :( ®.I.P phil ....

  • great my first concert and still have the program great

  • great my very first concert in the royal court liverpool and still have the program

  • @delta135able If you were in Liverpool you werent at this concert , this was at the regal hitchin 83.

  • Sinner do a very good cover of this, too. Not as good as Thin Lizzy, but who is?

  • This is just fucking magic.

  • I'm a Portuguese fan. The first thing I did in Dublin was enter a record store and ask where Mr. Lynnott was barried to visit his grave to pray for his soul and thanks for everything. "Sun Goes Down" it's so profound, beautiful and melodic that makes me cry. The JS solo is a masterpiece of musical feeling. Only a great spirit and soul like the Irish permits to do works like this. A big HELLO to Irish people from Lisbon. I love Eire and we will never forget the way you treated us in 2003.

  • great !

  • I listen to this great band, and this faboulos album, since the moment that came out, is very sad that Phil die, too many moments of great joy had happen with this band, is bad tha t in Mexico we never had the chance to see them in concert, but Thanks friends from Ireland to give to the world one of the best bands of rock ever, and for every greatrocker like Rory Galagher

  • THE SAD THING IS IN IRELAND WERE I COME FROM PEOPLE THINK U2 ARE THE GREATEST IRISH BAND OF ALL TIME WHEN IN FACT THERE NOT FIT TO MENTIONED IN THE SAME BREATH AS MY BELOVED THIN LIZZY , TO ME IRISH ROCK MUSIC DIED IN JANUARY 1986 ,YES WE HAD A REINCARNATION OF A FORM OF THIN LIZZY A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO BUT TO BE HONEST PHIL LYNOTT WAS THIN LIZZY WHEN HE DIED THEY DIED .

  • @gabmc1966 Sadly I agree with you. Even it's over twenty(!) years ago, that space can't be filled.... R.I.P. Phil

  • @gabmc1966 what about Therapy?

  • @gabmc1966 which goes for any great band.

  • @gabmc1966 ahmen

  • @gabmc1966 I never liked U2 so I agree with that. Thin Lizzy will always be my favourite irish rock band. Yeah, It's not Thin Lizzy without Phil. And I'd give Darren Wharton a mention too since he's in one of my favourite bands Dare. I believe their album "Out of the Silence" was a tribute to Phil Lynott.

  • @spiderpyx thanks for the email i agreewith you darren wharton was great with thin lizzy i will get myself a copy of out of the silence, once again thanks for the email and good luck in the future

  • @spiderpyx thanks for the email i agree with you darren wharton was great with thin lizzy i will get myself a copy of out of the silence, once again thanks for the email and good luck in the future

  • @gabmc1966 You're right, i saw them many times in England 3 x at Bingley Hall Staffs, the venue was heaving, according to one biography the place was sold out and an extra 8-10 thousand inside cause it was just a cattle shed/equestrian centre all standing. the timing of songs bang on and the audience eating out of his hand. U2 are only a jingle jangle basic chord band, i have most of their stuff. I think Rory was up there with em, great guitarist. check out Limehouse Lizzy-ace night out.

  • @thefaces11 hi there i have seen limehouse lizzy brilliant band , have you heard of "THIN AS LIZZY "also a great tribute band

  • @gabmc1966 personally, i like the pogues alot- but just as long as we're all in agreement that U2 SUCKS

  • @MultiNouns hi the pogues are a great band as well ,have you heard much of the drop kick murphys

  • @gabmc1966 I agree with you 1000%. The world of music truly lost one the greatest ever in January 1986. No one person aside from my mother has had as huge an influence on me musically as Phil did. We miss you Phil!

  • @gabmc1966 Absoloutely..........

  • @gabmc1966 I totaly agree

  • @gabmc1966 spot on!!! Thin Lizzy reincarnation are touring now, but it will never be classic Lizzy.

    RIP PHILO.

  • @Tirdfish Totally Agree, ok its not Lizzy as such, but its all we have left so we have to make the most of what was probally the best band in the world, With Six superb guitarist and fore or so standins all giving a diffrent flavour and breading new life into the band over the bands original life time, all i can say is we were lucky to be alive and to have witness this part in music history. Long live Lizzy and all who sailed in her, it dont matter if some were assholes, they made me smile!!

  • @jackshit64yea nice 1 capitan

  • @gabmc1966 I would agree but with Gorham, Downey and Wharton in this version I think they have a right to call themeselves TL. Im gonna go see this tour because now that Gary Moore has died I'm sure they will do a tribute to them both. I havent seen them since the Chinatown tour. It'll be exciting to see them again.

  • @gabmc1966 I would agree but with Gorham, Downey and Wharton in this version I think they have a right to call themeselves TL. Nice to see another Irishman, Viv Campbell joing them for this tour.

  • @jhs5150 hi there jhs5150 its only my humble opinion its good there touring again keeping the thin lizzy legacy alive but to me its the same as queen playing paul rogers good but not queen without freddie mercury. i wish you well. .R.I.P. GARY MOORE

  • @gabmc1966 thin lizzy wipes the floor with u2s ass.

  • @5150blssdmf they wipe the floor with most bands asses lol

  • @gabmc1966 i got cold chills reading this. Damn enough writing you've( done) done it! Thanks.

  • @gabmc1966 ha dude you said people shudn mention em in the same breath....but then you did it! lol But yeah i agree! also from ireland! and So proud of Thin lizzy and Rory gallagher!

  • @gabmc1966 i like you love thin lizzy, and their musical flame will never be exstiquished. But i think you shouldn't be to quick to put down U2. They are a superb rock band like lizzy from EIRE. And i don't know if you know this but it was Phil himself that endorsed U2's rise to great heights. If you ever take the time to listen to Bono on their live GO HOME concert 2001 slane castle. He thanks Phil for letting them open a lizzy show way back in the lale 70's. [EIRE ROCKS MUSIC.]

  • @oldmanarockin u2s not bad but... they just don't rock. the edge just doesn't cut it.

  • @gabmc1966 OMG MY CAPSLOCK BROKE TOO!!

  • @CCMrJones hey asshole will you F.O.A.D.if you have nothing worth while to say either good or bad then you should shut the fuck up

  • @gabmc1966 are you kidding me? behold!
