Debt will not make them properous in the long run. Only self liquidating debt can do that (debt that accomodates a stream of income to pay it down). I agree on the war - it was an incredible waste of money. Think of money as human capital. It takes the form of savings and debt. It should have a mind. It should be prudent and scarce. Investment in real assets like education, infrastructure, etc., not on covering up derivatives like it's what they're trying to do. By giving the banks money they're covering debt with more debt. We are probably on the same page. I believe we as a nation do not have the cash flow to support our debt levels - which is why we are imploding. The shadow banking system (i.e. AIG's CDS contracts gone bad) needs to be liquidated. Covering up those debts (artificially supporting its price to save a mismanaged bank) is not feasible. Debt is a future claim on human capital. If we assume debt as a country, we are forgoing the toil of our kids for whatever we buy with that debt.
If buy a bomb to kill a civilian to help GW Bush one up his Dad, I think we can agree it is immoral to ask our kids to pay for that without ever having a say. If its for ethanol - I dont know, I would disagree strongly with that, you may agree with that. What I would like is for us to balance the budget - chose our priorities and how much is moral to take from people at the barrel of a gun, and live within our means (no debt). The House and Senate were designed to meet periodically so that the Pols could return to thier "day job" and would not become depedent on thier public service income. USA Today vs. basic math. I live in Cali. The tax is 2.5% of the appraised value of your property. As the property increases in value, so does your tax. If they raised property tax then yes, they could raise taxes even more, but taxes went up dramaticaly with the rise in real estate value. Cali is in a hole because it wants to be all things to all people. Both parites suck. Over the course of the next two years you will learn a hard lesson. In our state we only have state income tax, our property tax is local only. It goes up every year regardless of property reevaluation, since the expenses go up as everything gets more expensive. There is no way our town would be able to balance its budget without increasing the tax rate.

The bottom line is the business cycle sucks. The business cycle is indicative of human nature and has become exaggerated by the Federal Reserve giving banks money for nothing. We have to cut back, we have to reach real demand levels before we can growth again. You have to understand the govt has no money. They have to take to give. So public jobs are kept at the expense of private. We are in really tough times. We need to come together, lose the flat screens and help friends and fam.

I agree - over population is a problem, but the one saving grace is that birth rates in developed countries are plummeting. Still, I suspect our children will have some very difficult issues to deal with. Don't worry about religion - the Pope can't tell my wife and I not to use birth control, but keep Bernard Law out of jail. Catholicism and the like will die a slow death.

I've changed my line of thinking many times over the last 8 years as I find flaws in my logic, but I've never found it helpful to only present one side of the story. Investment in real assets like education, infrastructure, etc., not on covering up derivatives like it's what they're trying to do. By giving the banks money they're covering debt with more debt. The shadow banking system (i.e. AIG's CDS contracts gone bad) needs to be liquidated. Covering up those debts (artificially supporting its price to save a mismanaged bank) is not feasible. Debt is a future claim on human capital. If we assume debt as a country, we are forgoing the toil of our kids for whatever we buy with that debt.

I'm a huge believer that there should be term limits and what you mentioned is largely why. These people get in office, scratch each others backs and end up owing favors all over the place. I have a huge problem with a govt helping the wealthy at the expense of all else. McCain lost all credibility when he made the "redistribute the wealth" argument. That began under Reagan redistributing wealth upward. I'm currently reading "Tear Down This Myth" by Will Hunch. It's a great read so far. Bye.

I agree. Congress was never meant to be a full time job. The House and Senate were designed to meet periodically so that the Pols could return to thier "day job" and would not become depedent on thier public service income. Once they become dependent on those incomes, they will do what it takes to keep thier job, not what is right long term. I'll look for Tear Down This Myth - I'm always looking for a good read. Thanks

And Sophie - one last thing. I can't tell you how important it is to look at money as human capital. Is should be a medium of exchange between to specialists (baker / shoemaker). Now imagine the terrible effects of the Federal Reserve artificially setting the price of money too low through interest rates and then emanating that cheap money out through a cartel of banks. Human capital should be scarce and prudent. Not sure if this makes sense. Take care.

All the cheap money led to a lot of wasteful buying, too little saving and too much greed by some of the lenders. USA Today vs. basic math. I live in Cali. The tax is 2.5% of the appraised value of your property. As the property increases in value, so does your tax. If they raised property tax then yes, they could raise taxes even more, but taxes went up dramaticaly with the rise in real estate value. Cali is in a hole because it wants to be all things to all people. Both parites suck. Over the course of the next two years you will learn a hard lesson. badonkadonk34, on the property tax issue, just relying on property values going up doesn't mean that California is keeping up with expenses. In our state we only have state income tax, our property tax is local only. It goes up every year regardless of property reevaluation, since the expenses go up as everything gets more expensive. There is no way our town would be able to balance its budget without increasing the tax rate.

The unemployement rate is the key to a healthy economy. We need some of the jobs shipped overseas to come back.
I agree with you that towns, states and the feds should be working to have balanced budgets and even a 'rainy day' fund. If you think about the interest that is paid locally etc. on borrowed money, that is money not being spent on better services, infrastructure, etc.

The bottom line is the business cycle sucks. The business cycle is indicative of human nature and has become exaggerated by the Federal Reserve giving banks money for nothing. We have to cut back, we have to reach real demand levels before we can growth again. You have to understand the govt has no money. They have to take to give. So public jobs are kept at the expense of private. We are in really tough times. We need to come together, lose the flat screens and help friends and fam.

The best times I've had with my children are when doing simple things: a trip to the library and then reading a book in the shade of a big tree in summer, baking cookies together, hot chocolate after they 'helped' shovel snow.
We need to treasure our families and friends much more than stuff. Making memories = cheap fun.

badonkadonk34, The big problem in my town and in Cal. is the huge increase in population. More schools, hospitals, etc. equals higher expenses. Overpopulation is creating huge problems world-wide, as prices rise with demand, and more people equals much more demand for housing, food and even water.
It is a problem that conflicts with religions banning birth control. Imagine God shaking his head saying, 'go forth and multiply' didn't mean at the expense of all the other creatures I made!

I agree - over population is a problem, but the one saving grace is that birth rates in developed countries are plummeting. Still, I suspect our children will have some very difficult issues to deal with. Don't worry about religion - the Pope can't tell my wife and I not to use birth control, but keep Bernard Law out of jail. Catholicism and the like will die a slow death.
