kids shouldn't smoke weed. I'm in high school and a lot of my friends got into it and they would skip school to go smoke and it caused grades to drop and some dropped out others didn't. The only problem with pot is that u can be tested positive for drugs up to 90 days after and as an athlete getting caught with that will ruin your future their is nothing wrong with it but its not worth the risk for everyone

Well in my experience. This womans approach is the way to go. My parents always tried to inform me of what was right or wrong. But they never came at me with all of this weed will kill you bullshit. I was a similar goody-two-shoes child (like the woman's oldest) but because my mother was always upfront about weed, it wasn't something that 'wigged me out' - I just knew that I didn't have any interest in trying it. In high school I hung out with the stoners and read about cannabis (interesting plant for a botany major!) but didn't smoke.

I smoked responsibly and have been since then, every once in a while. My mother was also open about her stories and experiences with mushrooms and acid. He decided to try weed in his first year of university, too, and found he didn't like it as much as drinking so he hasn't since.

Recently I helped my mother sort through some pot she had purchased for a friend going through chemotherapy and so my mother is giving me a little as a stocking-stuffer for the holidays, since she knows it helps with my chronic hip pain (I had a hip replacement at 17). She no longer smokes. I can't state enough my appreciation for how my parents handled this.

@carbonxkiwi At 19, I got the first inkling of the idea that I'd like to try...so I did, without a Big Stigma or feeling like I was Failing At Standing Up Against Peer Pressure. I smoked responsibly and have been since then, every once in a while. My mother was also open about her stories and experiences with mushrooms and acid. She advised, "My advice is stay away from acid!" and based on her openness, I've been non-judgemental with friends but have had no desire to partake myself at any point.

@carbonxkiwi My younger brother has always been more of the "I wanna try I wanna try I wanna try!" kind of kid, but by the time he hit late high school years he wasn't interested in drinking or anything else. Come university, he found a fondness for alcohol; he drinks responsibly for the most part (though he goes over the top with his mates sometimes). He decided to try weed in his first year of university, too, and found he didn't like it as much as drinking so he hasn't since.

@carbonxkiwi Anyway, I definitely think my parents' policy of openness, honesty and a running dialogue was the right way to go with us. Recently I helped my mother sort through some pot she had purchased for a friend going through chemotherapy and so my mother is giving me a little as a stocking-stuffer for the holidays, since she knows it helps with my chronic hip pain (I had a hip replacement at 17). She no longer smokes. I can't state enough my appreciation for how my parents handled this.

I'm the same way with my kids. I let my kids smoke weed, but if they ever touch crack or heroin or meth I'd be so sad. Marijuana isn't bad at all, DARE is stupid as hell, this woman is awesome.

@194user yeah but they do lie about it and the point she said about "seeing ur cousin high all the time etc etc" is right. Because kids realize that they have been lied to, and they know they wont die from trying weed once so they usually try it once. This lady is so smart because she doesn't bullshit her kids or beat around the bush. She tells them the facts and stories based on real life. You can't get more realistic/legit teaching than that.

@194user DARE says moderate marijuana will ruin your life and make you go crazy and move on to heroin. When DARE kids try smoking weed (which 75% of them will at some point during their lives, let's be honest) they will think 'hey this isn't bad like everybody said, if they were lying about this then coke meth and heroin must be fine too'. Maybe not to that extreme but that is basically the message they send. How can kids trust them when they've lied to them before? Honesty from the start I say.
